The reason I think this is because Kate was the only storm that used this name at this intensity. I mean think about it, it is similar to Rafael and its 2012 counterpart. Rafael reached Category 3 strength and its wiki page was edited to just Hurricane Rafael. Whereas previously, Rafael in 2012 was just labeled as Hurricane Rafael. A storm with the given name Kate has never reached this peak intensity. Never in 1979, 1991, and so on. So therefore, I think that this article should be renamed to Hurricane Kate instead of Hurricane Kate (1985). If I am wrong, I sincerely apologize. Typo
[edit]It was found a typo in the article: It is not Jamacia, I'm pretty sure that is Jamaica. Juan andrés
I fixed the typo, sorta. I removed all references to Jamaica, as they were not affected by the hurricane. Hurricanehink 01:37, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Todo
[edit]Structure is quite good; it just needs some more on impact. Jdorje 20:32, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- Make sure you retain precision in converting units. 5.8 inches should be 150 mm (2 digites), not 147.3 mm. Jdorje 02:54, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, I meant to do that for all of them, but I guess I missed that one. Good catch. Hurricanehink 03:08, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
Importance
[edit]I don't see why a billion-dollar storm in today's terms is Low-importance. It doesn't deserve to go any higher than Mid, but still. --Dylan620 (Home • yadda yadda yadda • Ooooohh!) 16:26, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
- Mid is fine. Thegreatdr (talk) 18:23, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
The NHC just released a paper confirming that Kate is the latest US hurricane landfall. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:03, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
- I've added it. HurricaneFan25 12:31, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
Ida: First November hurricane since 1985?
[edit]I was fixing my edit when it got reverted ... sorry, I meant Gulf of Mexico, per Jeff Masters here. - Dank (push to talk) 22:09, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
- That would be correct. You can add that line into the article, but you can't use a blog for a reference where primary source information (like HURDAT) is available as a reference. Thegreatdr (talk) 00:25, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
I caught one in the Impact section
[edit]-- Cape San Blas is in Gulf County. Okaloosa is much farther west. --DuneDancer (talk) 19:56, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

- No Cuba prep for the second paragraph of the lead? (sad face) It reads weird when you go from talking about shelters opening in Florida to deaths in Cuba.
- Added evac :) --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- "Heavy rainfall in Cuba caused numerous mudslides and flooding, killing several and leading to severe agriculture damage." - Several what? :)
- Ack. Added "people" --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- "Damage totaled to roughly $400 million, making it the most damaging hurricane to strike the island in many decades." - $400 million what? Is there a specific storm for the second portion of the sentence?
- Well, it's unadjusted for inflation, and it seems like it's the highest total at the time, but I don't have confirmation of that. I added that all damage totals are in 1985 USD. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- "Storm surge and flooding rains destroyed much of the oyster industry, causing many to lose their jobs in the weeks after the storm." - Again, minor, I know...but many what?
- I think some animals at Sea World lost their jobs. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- "Before the formation of Hurricane Kate, there was a ridge located across the southeastern United States for much of the autumn of 1985, and concurrently a major trough persisted across the western portion of the country." - I think this sentence would read better if it were broken up. But that's just me.
- Split and added a semicolon. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- " It gradually organized with the favorable conditions, and on November 15 a Hurricane Hunters flight into the area indicated the development of a tropical cyclone; as gale force winds were already present, the system was upgraded directly to Tropical Storm Kate, about 240 miles (385 km) northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico." - The favorable conditions gradually organized too?! :O Comma after 15??
- Eh, the "it" pretty obviously refers to the interaction of the wave and the trough. (I think that's what you meant, the unclear antecedent?) --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- As far as I'm aware, high pressure systems not juxtaposed over the center of a cyclone don't provide ventilation for a tropical cyclone. The backing upper-level low does.
- This suggests otherwise... --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- Fair enough. Looks like I learned something new. :) TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 02:56, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- This suggests otherwise... --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- "Until 2011, Kate was considered the second-latest hurricane landfall in the United States..." - Kate was a hurricane, not a landfall. "Until 2011, Kate was considered the second-latest hurricane ever to make landfall in the United States" or something of the sort.
- Added "having" --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- "Three shelters were opened in Key West, though only 500 sought refugee during the storm, with most citizens on the island rode out the storm in their homes." - Refugee to refuge and rode to riding.
- Clarified, thanks! --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- "As Kate passed to the southwest of Key West, the storm produced winds of 47 mph (76 km/h), and there were unofficial wind gusts of 104 mph (167 km/h)." - In Key West?
- Yea, added. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- "While Kate moved ashore, it produced an 11 m (36 ft) storm surge at Cape San Blas, causing beach and dune erosion in Gulf County." - Any reason why this isn't ft (m)?
- Oops, I missed the ft indicator. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- References 26 and 40 give 404 errors (not found).
- Fixed both. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
That looks to be about it. All-in-all a "good" article (and soon to be a good article :)). TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 05:10, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
- Yay, thanks! --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
