===Critical reception===
A review from ''[[Vanguard (Nigeria)|Vanguard]]'' praised Wande Coal's 2020 single "Again" as a testament to his enduring musical talent and vocal prowess, describing it as “an impressive love song” that reflects his ability to produce classics despite recent lukewarm releases. It noted the song’s soft and groovy beats, though the repeated pre-chorus slightly dampened its appeal, while still commending Wande Coal’s “charming voice” and lyrical clarity.<ref>{{cite news|title=Music Review: Wande Coal drops impressive single, ‘Again’|url=https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/02/music-review-wande-coal-drops-impressive-single-again/|work=[[Vanguard (Nigeria)|Vanguard]]|accessdate=16 December 2024|date=24 February 2020}}</ref>

"Baby" is a song by Nigerian singer Joeboy. It was released on 1 March 2019, through Banku Music and emPawa Africa, as the lead single from his debut EP Love & Light (2019). The song was produced by Dëra.

Background

[edit]

Joeboy, born Joseph Akinfenwa-Donus, began his music career in 2017 with a viral cover of Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You." The cover marked his transition from rapping to singing, a decision encouraged by a friend. It caught the attention of Nigerian artist and entrepreneur Mr Eazi, who discovered Joeboy on Instagram and invited him to join the emPawa Africa initiative, a program designed to support emerging African artists by providing them with resources to grow their careers.[1]

In early 2019, Joeboy recorded "Baby" after receiving a beat created by Dëra and sent to him by producer BeatsbyKO. He wrote and recorded the song in just 45 minutes, trying out several choruses before finalizing the hook. When Mr Eazi heard the track, he shared it on social media, building anticipation ahead of its release on 1 March 2019. With support from emPawa Africa, Joeboy utilized a cost-effective visualizer to promote "Baby," which played a crucial role in the song's viral success. He credited the initiative with equipping him to effectively market his music and maintain his independence.[2]

"Again" is a song by Nigerian singer Wande Coal. It was released on 6 February 2020, through Starstruck Management and Empire Distribution as the third single from Coal's first EP Realms (2020). The song was produced by Melvitto and Screwface.[13] A remix of the song featuring American rapper Wale was included on Realms in 2020. On 18 October 2024, Melvitto released the extended version of "Again."[14]

Critical reception

[edit]

A review from Vanguard praised Wande Coal's 2020 single "Again" as a testament to his enduring musical talent and vocal prowess, describing it as “an impressive love song” that reflects his ability to produce classics despite recent lukewarm releases. It noted the song’s soft and groovy beats, though the repeated pre-chorus slightly dampened its appeal, while still commending Wande Coal’s “charming voice” and lyrical clarity.[15]
