The name comes from "cheriya pathu ooru" (ten small places). Cheruvathur has a viewpoint on the national highway to Calicut. The view from this location includes Cheruvathur railway station amid sprawling paddy fields and village houses. Even though hundreds of people stop their vehicles at this location, no basic facilities are provided here. Cheruvathur railway station has stops for almost all major trains which travels between Mangalore & Shornur.

Cheruvathur is a town and grama panchayat in the Kasaragod district, state of Kerala. It is located 41 km (25 mi) from the district headquarters Kasaragod.[2]

Local roads have access to NH-66 which connects to Mangalore in the north and Kannur in the south. The nearest railway station is Cheruvathur on Mangalore-Palakkad line. There are airports at Mangalore and Kannur.
