===Function of offices=== |

It would be nice to have a description of the function of each of these offices. —75.42.174.181 23:54, 6 December 2006 (UTC) |

:Right now each cabinet member is listed along with his office, and there are wikilinks associated with each office. It is enough to allow users to click on the name of the office to read about it. ===SI No=== |

Right now the first column is some kind of numbering system called the SI No. What is this? Is this an official ranking system, or just something left over from a table template? I propose that it be removed if it has no significance. ===Education=== |
Right now the table includes a note about the education of each council member. This seems unnecessary to me because I know of no rule that says that proof of formal education is required to be a council member for the Indian government and also I do not think this information is necessary for understanding each member's position. I propose to move all information about education to each member's personal Wikipedia article. Any objections? Please compare Wikipedia articles for national cabinets with me. |

Here is the category page for national cabinets. Here is an example from the table for the United States Cabinet, which I feel is an excellent presentation. |

If it were possible, I would like the page for India's cabinet to resemble the format for the page of America's cabinet. If I cannot find enough pictures to fill things in, then at least I would like the section headings and type of text information to match. Possibly also the constituency listings and house affiliations should stay also, because if I understand correctly, most members of the Indian cabinet simultaneously server as MPs. Would anyone object to me making changes here? <b><span style="color:#0000CC;">Blue</span> <span style="color:#0033FF;">Rasberry</span></b> 20:05, 6 August 2010 (UTC) |

==Title of this article== |
What is the correct name for this group of people? The current name of the article is "Union Council of Ministers of India". This group includes these three subgroups: Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State with Independent Charge, and Ministers of State. Here are some websites which call this group the "Council of Ministers": |
*India.gov.in |
*Cabinet Secretariat of India |
*various news sources Hindustan Times Groundreport Oneindia.in some other site |
Here is a source calling it the "Union Council of Ministers" The Pioneer (Indian newspaper). Probably there are other sources, but this seems to be a less-used name. |
Especially because of the Indian government's use of the name "Council of Ministers" in two prominent places where they are naming things for the general public, I propose changing the name of this article to "Council of Ministers (India)" and having the other name redirect to this. Any comments? Please provide sources to support statements. :User:Neelix just changed the name of the article from "'Union Council of Ministers of India' to 'Cabinet of India' (To be consistent with other articles about national cabinets.)" It is not obvious to me why this article should be named by the most obvious English-word description for what its subject is, when in fact the article's subject has a formal name which is definitely not "Cabinet of India". Neelix, could I invite you to comment? <span style="background:#cedff2;color:#11e"> Blue Rasberry </span><span style="cursor:help"><span style="background:#cedff2;color:#11e">(talk)</span></span> 21:25, 27 May 2011 (UTC) |
::According to Wikipedia's policy on article titles, "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's 'official' name as an article title; it instead uses the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources." A Google Books search reveals that "Cabinet of India" is by far the more common name in English-language reliable sources; "Cabinet of India" receives 270 hits while "Union Council of Ministers of India" receives only 6. Also, "Cabinet of India" is far more consistent with the titles of other articles about national cabinets. For these reasons, I moved the article to the present title. Neelix (talk) 21:35, 27 May 2011 (UTC) |
:::That sounds reasonable and I support your action entirely. This is a good resolution to the naming problem with this article. External affairs minister SM Krishna had resigned on Friday. Cabinet ministers Ambika Soni, Mukul Wasnik and SK Sahai, Ministers of state Mahadev Khandela (tribal affairs), Agatha Sangma (rural development) and Vincent Pala (water resources and minority affairs) also quit on Saturday. So the information provided here is incorrect and needs an update. Also it would be great if someone can pur "recent events" header. request edit |
This article has been edited by user: SanjayMohan to reflect racist attitudes against a large section of the population of India. |
I am not an expert and so I do not feel comfortable editing the article. |
I take issue with comments on the page including: |
-There are three times as many Bengalis as Punjabis, and they are more talented, honest and hardworking than Punjabis |
-There are as many Malayalis as Punjabis, and they are more talented, honest and hardworking than Punjabis, yet not a single seat was assigned to a Malayali. |
-There are 1.5 times as many Oriyas as Punjabis, and they are more talented, honest and hardworking than Punjabis, |
-In a major coup against India and Prime Minister Modi, Punjabis have maneuvered to take control of 5 out of 24 cabinet positions |
This is my first time requesting edits, so apologies if this has been done incorrectly. -- 24.52.236.10 (talk) 02:56, 28 May 2014 (UTC) |

:*Although I agree with you that there many organizations among government ministers of the world, there is only one with such a title and topic. This case is similar to the unnecessary adding of "Indian", "of India", and "(India)" across Wikipedia. |
::Examples include: |
::* Ministry of Steel, previously Ministry of Steel (India) |

::* Annexation of Portuguese India, previously Indian annexation of Portuguese India |

*Oppose – "Union Council of Ministers" is potentially ambiguous, and I see no benefit to removing the "of India", which helps identify the topic in line with WP:PRECISE. ** The title with the "of India" suffix violates the exact policy that you referenced. It states, "Usually, titles should be precise enough to unambiguously define the topical scope of the article, but no more precise than that." There is no other Union Council of Ministers than the one in India, so being overly precise by adding the suffix violates policy, unless there is a specific policy or guideline to suggest otherwise (as per the Leeds North West example mentioned in the section you linked to). --Joshua Issac (talk) 21:22, 13 April 2016 (UTC) |
:::It is not overly precise. "Union Council of Ministers" could conceivably refer to something else, even if it doesn't in actuality. Because of this, it does not define the scope of the article in a way that I find to be acceptable. *Support - There are no other subjects named Union Council of Ministers. There is no need to add (India) to the end of the title for every Indian organisation. The convention is to have just the actual title whenever there is no other organisation that has the same name. Examples: |

** Defense Intelligence Agency, not Defense Intelligence Agency of the United States |

** Government Digital Service, not Government Digital Service of the United Kingdom |

Because the section is about current council of ministers , I guess left office date is completely unnecessary. |

== Hide "Left office" column from all the tables == |

I would like to add the following information: |

All the tables in section Union Council of Ministers#Current Union Council of Ministers have a column "Life office". All the values for this column are same i.e. "Incumbent". |
Since at least the turn of the millennia, evidence indicates that an MP’s electoral performance enhances the likelihood of being granted a ministerial portfolio. 82.40.245.248 (talk) 10:37, 7 January 2020 (UTC) |

Currently, the council is headed by prime minister Narendra Modi and consists of 29 members, including the prime minister. |

This is incorrect. The correct information is: After the reshuffling, the Council of Ministers comprises the PM and 78 ministers. In the 2024 Council of Ministers, there are 29 Cabinet Ministers, 3 Ministers of State (Independent Charge) and 47 Ministers of State. |
