Pop groups and pop singers
When the article lists things that gain cult followings, should it include pop groups and pop singers? Vorbee (talk) 18:22, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
:Vorbee If the definition of a cult following is 'something that has a small but very loyal fanbase', that pretty much describes everything ever created or assembled. So broadly speaking, I personally don't have an objection to including a couple of examples of cult followings for groups and singers, (well sourced, obviously,) but I don't think this article should become a repository for everything that could be construed as having a cult following. I think of something like the Rocky Horror Picture Show as having a cult following, because there are lots of enthusiastic people who dress up and attend midnight viewings, and reenact the film from their audience seats. Are we talking about the same sort of obsession and freakishness with X, Y or Z group or singer that is added? "Cult following" used to mean something... The Brands section mentions a lot of specific car models, shouldn't that be under it's own section? Cashew.wheel (talk) 15:48, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
We should reconsider mentioning that films have a cult following
So if you look at basically any article about an obscure, badly-received movie (e.g. most of what Mystery Science Theater has), Wikipedia will say “this film has gained a cult following”.

This is dumb. It really doesn’t mean anything—you could probably say this about any movie if you look hard enough at the vast expanse of the Internet. In most cases, that a movie or other work has a “cult following” is meaningless, or at least not notable.
