The community is near the Gebo Mine, developed by Samuel Gebo, a coal mine nearby.[4] Coalville, Montana, also known as Gebo, Montana was the community closer to the coal mine itself.

The Fromberg Post Office was established on March 21, 1903, with Abraham Pierson as the town's first postmaster.[5] The town was named after Northern Pacific stockholder Conrad Fromberg.[4]

The Gebo Barn, 2.5 miles to the south on Gebo Ranch, was completed in 1909 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

There were 211 housing units at an average density of 439.6 per square mile (169.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.7% Native American, 1.6% from other races, and 0.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.3% of the population.

There were 189 households, of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 32.3% were non-families. 27.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The racial makeup of the town was 92.18% White, 0.41% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 6.79% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.41% of the population.

There were 198 households, out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% were married couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
