Mayuka Thaïs (/Tie-eese/) (born September 25, 1979) is an American singer-songwriter, artist, actress and edutainer. [1][2]
Early life and career beginnings
[edit]Thaïs was born in San Francisco, California but was raised in both California & Tokyo, Japan. Her mother Teri Suzanne is American of European decent, and her late father Naoyuki Nagasawa was Japanese. [3] [4] While raised in Tokyo, Japan, she worked in the edutainment industry as a studio singer for bilingual multi media products at the age of 5 for Nippon Columbia. [5] Her notable role came when she became the main singer, actress on a popular children's television show Shimajiro. [6]
Activism
[edit]In 2007, Mayuka released her first independent single When Elephants Cry on Youtube to help raise awareness of the plight of Elephants in captivity. [7] The positive reaction to this song prompted worldwide organizations to contact Mayuka and request her help in advocating for elephant rescue. She was asked to perform this song at the Comedy Store for a recognition dinner of high profile celebrities including Jorja Fox (CSI), comedian Lily Tomlin and then Los Angeles City Councilman Tony Cardenas now Congressman.
