The 40 dates back to the 1950s, and originally ran from Wanstead to Herne Hill. |

The 40 bus route initially ran from Wanstead Station to Camberwll Green(Mon - Sats) and was extended to Herne Hill(Post Office) |

on Sundays.Originally serviced by RT's on weekdays, these routes continued until the introduction of RML's on Sundays& Bank Holidays in the mid '60's when the route was extended to Norwood Junction. During the late 1970s an intermediate termininating point was Aldgate. |

In 1994 the Southern terminus was switched from [[Herne Hill]] to [[Dulwich]], The northern terminus being [[Blackwall DLR station]] . With the opening of the [[Jubilee Line Extension]] in 1999 the route was withdrawn between Blackwall and Aldgate. |
