Refers to the Pacific water shrew, as “an attractive mammal.” Describes skull as relatively large, with a ventral curve, five upper unicuspid teeth; the third distinctly smaller in size than the fourth. Upper unicuspids have a pigmented ridge extending to the cingulum. Large medial tine present on the upper incisor, within the pigmented region on the face. |
Dental formula: incisors: 1/1; unicuspids: 5/1; premolar: 1/1; molars: 3/3. |
The large size distinguishes it from all others except S palustris (Water Shrew). However, S palustris is dark grey to black on dorsum, with a silver-grey belly and bicolored tail, and more conspicuous fringes of hair on the feet. It has a smaller skull without the curvature, with upper incisors with indinstict medial tines. |
Found in forests of Red Alder, Bigleak Maple, Western Hemlock or Western Red-cedar, bordering marshes of skunk cabbage. Habitats characterized by extensive canopy cover and ground cover, from shrubs, logs, and debris. |
In British Columbia, generally found at low elevations below 600 m, but has been collected in Mt Seymour Provincial Park at 850 m. |
In southwesterd BC in 1992, Carlos Galindo-Leal and Gustavo Zuleta collected 1,000 small mammles with traps in 55 locations over a wide area of distribution. Only three were Pacific water shrews. |
Diet: aquatic insects (water beetles and stonfly nymphs), craneflies, ground beetles, spiders, harvestmen, centipes, earthworms, sluds, and small terrestrial snails. |
Nests in the wild are constructed of shredded bark. No breeding data exist for British Columbia. Elsewhere, breeding season runs late January to late August, most born in March. Litter size = 3-4. Number of litters not known. Males do not breed until second year. |
Predators: likely owls, giant salamader, fish. |
Eastern limits are Chilliwack River and Agassiz. Northernmost limits are low elevations on north shore of Burrard Inlet. |
