Lee comprimises one half of Blood Axis, creates music under her solo project Alraune and has collaborated extensively with Waldteufel. She was a member of Amber Asylum and has worked with various musicians, including Fire + Ice, In Gowan Ring, Kembra Pfahler, and The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, Backworld, Crash Worship, Pauline Oliveros and Alvin Curran. The American composer Lou Harrison wrote "Round for Annabelle and April for 2 soprano instruments" for Annabel and her sister while he was visiting the family in Stuttgart, Germany in 1981 May 29-30.

Photography and film work
Lee helped write and shoot Red Spirit Lake (1993) and We Await (1995) although she changed her name to Ellen Smithy in the credits. With Tessa Hughes-Freeland she made the super-8 movie Dirty based on a George Battaile story (see Jack Sargent's book The Cinema of Transgression).

Lee performed and exhibited in New York City, San Francisco and Mexico City (see the book La Panaderia: 1994-2002) but turned away from visual arts after receiving an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1995 in order to focus on music .

Lee appears in the films and photos of Jonas Mekas, Mike Kuchar, Richard Kern, Eric Kroll, Charles Gatewood, Nick Zedd and others. She is 3 years old in Mekas' film He Stands in a Desert Counting the Seconds of His Life (1969/1985). She appears both on the cover and within Richard Kern's New York Girls and stars in his movies The Bitches and Nazi. Lee appears in Charles Gatewood's book Badlands and in the music videos of The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. Lee also makes a brief appearance in a Billy Joel video and with the other musicians of Amber Asylum in a Journey video.
