:::This is apparently the only time Jimbo can do it, as he's only in town for one day (arriving late on theThursday night and leaving early on the Saturday morning). He's booked up on the Friday night and all through the Friday, so that's why he proposed breakfast. Of course, if there had been a time in the middle of the day that would also have ruled it out for many people who would have to be at work or school. So, I doubt that Jimbo is going to be able to offer us a "better" time. We'll have to persuade him to stay longer next time. Metamagician3000 22:55, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

:Is'nt Jimbo's Conference in ZINC in Federation Square? Maybe there is somewhere suitable across on Southbank. --Bduke 12:37, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
::There should be quite a few places at Southbank or at Federation Square itself (the latter would save more time if the conference is in Federation Square). I have no idea which places are good for breakfast, though. I'll take some soundings, but if any of you have recommendations ... I do like the Blue Train at Southbank, but we might be able to find somethng closer, and I've never been there for breakfast. The place in Federation Square adjacent to the big screen (can't recall its name) might be okay. If we narrow it down to one or two places, I'm prepared to call them. ::I see that The Blue Train only gets a lukewarm review in that blog, but that's better than a bad review. Walter's Wine Bar gets a great review, but it might be a bit up-market and intimidating for what we want. The blog doesn't seem to review any places actually in Federation Square. I'm thinking The Blue Train might be a real possibility ... still wondering about places in Federation Square itself. Metamagician3000 01:11, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

The Blue Train?
I've made some inquiries at the Blue Train, since it's a spot at Southbank that I know well and have always liked. It'll be only a short walk to Jimbo's venue and is very easily accessible by train or tram. I expect that parking would even be quite easy at that time of day.

They don't take bookings but tell me that, assuming a group of about 15, we'll be able to have any spot in the house if we turn up at 7.30 am. But if anyone has better ideas, or wants to research some other possibilities, let's get it on the table (as it were). Metamagician3000 09:56, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

I can't help thinking that, if he is pressed for time, it may be better to choose somewhere actually at Fed Square. FNMF 11:21, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

:From the snooping around I've done, most places at Fed Square itself don't seem to open early enough. But I see that the Atrium Cafe opens at 7.30 am on Fridays, and might be an alternative. Does anyone know it or feel like checking it out? Or know any possibilities that I've missed? Metamagician3000 11:47, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

::Could someone provide a map or details of the location at Southbank of the Blue Train. - Cuddy Wifter 01:14, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

:::Does this help at all? I have to admit that I often get lost, myself, finding the right level for things at Southbank ... and I live close in and go there relatively often. Metamagician3000 04:41, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

::::There doesn't seem to be a map provided online. ==Agenda?==

I haven't addressed the issue of any particular agenda, but I wonder if there are any things that people particularly want to discuss with Jimbo there. If there are, maybe make a note here so others are aware of them in advance. This is the first meetup for me, so I have no real sense of what has been discussed in the past. Metamagician3000 14:35, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

:Some of the earlier meetups had brief summaries of discussion recorded on their pages. Topics have ranged from what's happening in the projects at the moment, to what people think about the projects and where they are headed, and particular issues relating to Australian editors. Really it's pretty freeform. --bainer (talk) 15:06, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

I think we should keep it fairly freeform. However, I would like to ask Jimbo about his views on:
#Notability or article inclusion. Is it entirely linked to sources or is there something that is different from sources and do we deny an article even if the topic has multiple reliable non-trivial sources yet is about a topic that is not deemed to be notable? Should WikiPrpjects have a greater role in determining guidelines for article inclusion and exclusion?
#Is WP:RFA too much a hurdle. Can it be improved?
#The new proposal that makes "no consensus" a default "delete" at AfD, rather than a default "keep", if the article is a bio of a living person.
--Bduke 21:58, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

:Freeform suits me. The couple of things that I'd like to hear Jimbo's current thoughts on are: (1) the future of ATT, since the current discussion about how to close the poll (and how a working party might work) seems to be getting nowhere; (2) the credential verification thing - does he think the idea is now dead from lack of interest, or what? Metamagician3000 00:55, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Don't forget to brush your hair before going! Jimbo is making a documentary . He had a camera at Sydney, so presumably will at Melbourne too. John Dalton 13:04, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

All over!
I look forward to any observations. Thanks to Jimbo for giving us his time and sharing his thoughts - and to everyone who turned up. I was a bit nervous about whether the venue, etc., would work, but it all seemed fine to me. Anyone get any decent photos? I took a couple of shots but in a bit of rush, so I don't know that they'll have turned out great. Will check them later. It'd be good if we arranged a follow-up meetup not too far down the track, while it's still fresh in people's memories. Metamagician3000 00:25, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

:With so many people, I didn't get anything in the way of a record of who was there, but there were about 20 of us, so it looks like the actual attendance pretty much matched what is said above on this page about who was planning to come. If anyone kept a better record than that, maybe leave a note here. Speaking of which, someone left some notes behind - if you need them, you should be able to pick them up at the counter of the cafe. Wikipedians in Melbourne had held four previous meetups. The fifth was a breakfast meeting with Jimbo Wales in the city on Friday, 27 April 2007.

Jimbo proposed breakfast as the one real window of opportunity during his tightly scheduled stay in Melbourne.

Arrangements

[edit]

Current arrangements are that it's a 7.30 am start until Jimbo has to leave for his conference. For conference details (being held at ZINC, Federation Square) see: [1].

Venue is the The Blue Train in Southbank. No booking but they're kind of expecting us.

Is there anything else we'll need to do, apart from sorting out a venue?

[edit]

I'll try to work out a venue after consulting with Jimbo on where in the city he will be for his conference. I'll also try to remember to bring a camera - I'm sure I won't be the only one. Hmmmm, what else? Would name tags be useful? I suppose it might depend on how many of us there are. Is anyone any good at making them if we decide we want them? Metamagician3000 07:46, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I prefer social awkardness and a lack of ice-breaking to name tags. :) Grumpyyoungman01 11:16, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Jimbo will be the guy with the beard. --bainer (talk) 11:45, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My experience from going to conferences is that name tags work, even though it looks silly to walk around with one. On the other hand, wearing them while having breakfast in some public place like a cafe is definitely scary. Fortunately, I'm not likely to meet any of my mates given that it's 8am ;) . By the way, an easy way to get name tags is to get a sheet of stickers and a marker, give everybody a sticker and let them write their name on it and stick it on their shirt.
We might need to think a bit about how to organize the whole thing if many people come (Adelaide is expecting ±20), but let's first arrange the timetable and the location. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 12:45, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here's an offer - I'll bring along several colours of marker pen so you all have a choice; someone else bring along a sheet or two of stickers. :) Metamagician3000 23:16, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We have at least 3 Melbo-pedians who can't make it due to school.. I'm guessing they'll be a lot more. Is there anything we can do to get around this? — Deon555talkdesksign here! 22:45, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is apparently the only time Jimbo can do it, as he's only in town for one day (arriving late on theThursday night and leaving early on the Saturday morning). He's booked up on the Friday night and all through the Friday, so that's why he proposed breakfast. Of course, if there had been a time in the middle of the day that would also have ruled it out for many people who would have to be at work or school. So, I doubt that Jimbo is going to be able to offer us a "better" time. We'll have to persuade him to stay longer next time he visits Melbourne. Metamagician3000 22:55, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Someone remember to bring a sheet of stickers. I'm about out of them, and may not rectify it before Friday morming. :) Metamagician3000 05:59, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Venue

[edit]
Is'nt Jimbo's Conference in ZINC in Federation Square? Maybe there is somewhere suitable across on Southbank. --Bduke 12:37, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a blog dedicated to reviewing breakfast locations in and around Melbourne: [2]. --bainer (talk) 23:51, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see that The Blue Train only gets a lukewarm review in that blog, but that's better than a bad review. Walter's Wine Bar gets a great review, but it might be a bit up-market and intimidating for what we want. The blog doesn't seem to review any places actually in Federation Square. I'm thinking The Blue Train might be a real possibility ... still wondering about places in Federation Square itself. Metamagician3000 01:11, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Blue Train?

[edit]

I've made some inquiries at the Blue Train, since it's a spot at Southbank that I know well and have always liked. It'll be only a short walk to Jimbo's venue and is very easily accessible by train or tram. I expect that parking would even be quite easy at that time of day.

They don't take bookings but tell me that, assuming a group of about 15, we'll be able to have any spot in the house if we turn up at 7.30 am. But if anyone has better ideas, or wants to research some other possibilities, let's get it on the table (as it were). Metamagician3000 09:56, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

They also say they have a wireless connection, so you're encouraged to come armed to edit! Metamagician3000 10:16, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can't help thinking that, if he is pressed for time, it may be better to choose somewhere actually at Fed Square. FNMF 11:21, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From the snooping around I've done, most places at Fed Square itself don't seem to open early enough. But I see that the Atrium Cafe opens at 7.30 am on Fridays, and might be an alternative. Does anyone know it or feel like checking it out? Or know any possibilities that I've missed? Metamagician3000 11:47, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Could someone provide a map or details of the location at Southbank of the Blue Train. - Cuddy Wifter 01:14, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Does this help at all? I have to admit that I often get lost, myself, finding the right level for things at Southbank ... and I live close in and go there relatively often. Metamagician3000 04:41, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There doesn't seem to be a map provided online. But using this from Google Maps, if you start from the promenade next to the river, enter through the main entrance (big two story entryway, into the glass-roofed atrium bit, which is about 3/4 of the way from Princes Bridge towards the footbridge), go up one level (level 1), then turn right (west) and go right down to the end, you can't miss it from there. --bainer (talk) 05:38, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agenda?

[edit]

I haven't addressed the issue of any particular agenda, but I wonder if there are any things that people particularly want to discuss with Jimbo there. If there are, maybe make a note here so others are aware of them in advance. This is the first meetup for me, so I have no real sense of what has been discussed in the past. Metamagician3000 14:35, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the earlier meetups had brief summaries of discussion recorded on their pages. Topics have ranged from what's happening in the projects at the moment, to what people think about the projects and where they are headed, and particular issues relating to Australian editors. Really it's pretty freeform. --bainer (talk) 15:06, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should keep it fairly freeform. However, I would like to ask Jimbo about his views on:

 1. Notability or article inclusion. Is it entirely linked to sources or is there something that is different from sources and do we deny an article even if the topic has multiple reliable non-trivial sources yet is about a topic that is not deemed to be notable? Should WikiPrpjects have a greater role in determining guidelines for article inclusion and exclusion?
 2. Is WP:RFA too much a hurdle. Can it be improved?
 3. The new proposal that makes "no consensus" a default "delete" at AfD, rather than a default "keep", if the article is a bio of a living person.

--Bduke 21:58, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Freeform suits me. Metamagician3000 00:55, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't forget to brush your hair before going! Jimbo is making a documentary . He had a camera at Sydney, so presumably will at Melbourne too. John Dalton 13:04, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All over!

[edit]

I look forward to any observations. Thanks to Jimbo for giving us his time and sharing his thoughts - and to everyone who turned up. I was a bit nervous about whether the venue, etc., would work, but it all seemed fine to me. Anyone get any decent photos? I took a couple of shots but in a bit of rush, so I don't know that they'll have turned out great. Will check them later. It'd be good if we arranged a follow-up meetup not too far down the track, while it's still fresh in people's memories. Metamagician3000 00:25, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

With so many people, I didn't get anything in the way of a record of who was there, but there were about 20 of us, so it looks like the actual attendance pretty much matched what is said above on this page about who was planning to come. If anyone kept a better record than that, maybe leave a note here. Speaking of which, someone left some notes behind - if you need them, you should be able to pick them up at the counter of the cafe. Metamagician3000 00:54, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We can start planning the next one here. --bainer (talk) 01:40, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I only got one halfway decent shot. I uploaded it to the commons in case anyone would like to use it or just download a copy. I trust that there are some better ones available. Metamagician3000 00:55, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here are some photos I took, feel free to share and use. I enjoyed the meetup. It was inspiring to meet and chat with Jimmy. Peter Campbell 06:11, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
