The Regional Mathematical Olympiad or Regional Mathematics Olympiad or RMO is a regional-level Olympiad held in India as a qualifying round for the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad, which in turn is a qualifying round for the IMOTC, where students are selected for representing India at the International Mathematical Olympiad. |
==Important information== |
===Names of the regions=== |
There are currently only eighteen different regions for the Regional Mathematical Olympiad: |
* Andhra Pradesh |
* Bihar |
* Delhi |
* Gujarat |
* Karnataka |
* Kerala |
* Maharashtra ( except Mumbai ) + Goa |
* Mumbai |
* Madhya Pradesh |
* North Eastern States (Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur) |
* Orissa |
* Punjab (Includes Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and the Union territory of Chandigarh) |
* Rajasthan |
* Tamil Nadu |
* Uttar Pradesh |
* West Bengal |
* Kendriya Vidyalay Schools |
* Navodaya Schools |
The list is complete. |
===Examination policy=== |
The MO Cell (which is responsible for conducting the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad and the IMOTC) prepares a paper for the Regional Mathematical Olympiad. The co-ordinator of every region has the option of either following the MO Cell's paper or preparing his/her own paper. If the co-ordinator chooses to use the MO Cell's paper, then the examination must be conducted on a fixed date and time as prescribed by the MO Cell. This is usually the first Sunday of December, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. |
Regions which make their own papers: Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Orissa. |
Regions which follow the MO Cell's paper: Delhi, Karnataka, |
===Eligibility and selection=== |
All students who are still in school are eligible for the RMO. A total of thirty students is selected, based on performance at the RMO, to sit for the INMO. The MO Cell has imposed a restriction that each region is allowed to send at most six students from Class 12 for the INMO. |
This restriction has been imposed because the MO Cell wants to encourage students towards mathematics from a younger age so that their interest is stronger and their performance at the Olympiads is better. |
Individual regions may, however, declare ranks and give prizes based on performance at the RMO, even for people who do not qualify to the INMO. |
Note: the limit on candidates qualifying to the INMO does not include candidates who are giving the INMO again because of poor performance in the postal problem sets. Even though these students give the INMO along with those qualifying the RMO, their invitation comes directly from the MO Cell. |
===Level of the problems=== |
The RMO has the same topics as the International Mathematical Olympiad: algebra, geometry, number theory and combinatorics. However, the paper prepared by the MO Cell usually does not assume strong prerequisites blacjbeyond what is covered up to the eleventh standard syllabus. Individual regions that have greater expectations from students and that have instituted training programmes, may set papers with more prerequisites. |
famous rmo qualifiers include superbrains like JIM VARGHESE,who qualified in kerala RMO 2006,and later got all india second rank in the cbse group mathematical olympiad in 2007, the only qualification from the state in the last three years |
===Fee=== |
Each region decides its own fee structure. The fee typically ranges from Rs. 50 to Rs. 100. |
