Summary

[edit]

Fair use. This photo is the most widely published photo of B.L. Whorf appearing on several internet sites and books that mention him. It is used courtesy of: Benjamin Lee Whorf Papers. Manuscripts & Archives, Yale University Library.

It comes from the Yale research library digital. Their copyright policy can be found at: archive.http://mssa.library.yale.edu/madid/.

It states that:

As a contribution to education and research, Manuscripts and Archives is offering broad public access to the Manuscripts and Archives Digital Images Database (MADID).

Transmission or reproduction of protected items beyond that allowed by fair use requires the written permission of the copyright owners.

The Fair User rationale is:

  • It is used for a non-commercial and hopefully educational purpose.
  • It is not possible to obtain a free copy.
  • It is not possible to obtain a new photo of said person, 'cause he's dead.
  • It should not affect the commercial viability of the copyright.
