Route 201 commenced operating on 17 June 1995 between [[Mitcham Cricket Green]] and [[Tulse Hill railway station|Tulse Hill station]] via [[Streatham]] replacing part of [[London Buses route 200|route 200]]. It was operated by [[London General]]'s [[London General#Merton (AL)|Merton garage]]. |

Upon being re-tendered, the route passed to Mitcham Belle on 17 June 2000. It was extended at its northern end from to [[Herne Hill railway station|Herne Hill station]] on 9 June 2001, and at its southern end to [[Morden tube station|Morden station]] on 1 December 2001. |
