The town is named for the Angolan slaves who settled the area after a ship was wrecked on the Sete Pedras rocks in the sixteenth century, and whose descendants live in the settlement today. Some authorities claim the "Angolans" are actually a remnant of a pre-European population on the island. The townspeople speak Angolar (Ngola), a unique creole language. |
