Léo Grasset (born in 1989 in Saint-Etienne) is a French science popularizer, video maker and writer, famous for the DirtyBiology YouTube channel that he created in 2014.
Biography
[edit]Born in 1989 in Saint-Etienne, Grasset spent his childhood in Guadeloupe.[1] He graduated in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in life and earth sciences, and went on to gain a licentiate in biology of organisms and ecosystems, a master's in evolutionary biology,[2] and a further postgraduate diploma (DESU), for which he studied in Montreal and carried out fieldwork in Zimbabwe. He taught biology for a few months before devoting himself to popularization work. He also trained in journalism with the National Centre for Distance Education.[1]
In June 2014, he created the YouTube channel DirtyBiology with his brother Colas, an illustrator, whom he joined in Chiang Mai, Thailand, a country he particularly loves and where the cost of living is relatively low. From his computer in his room,[3] he presents biology from an offbeat and humorous angle. He decided to make his activities on the web his profession. As video-making is not very remunerative for a full-time job,[4] he uses classic monetization (advertisements broadcast before each video), but denounces the use of hidden advertisements and declines contracts (because they are too unbalanced). Participatory financing on Tipeee has since 2015 been another of his sources of income.[1]
In May 2017, he participated in a short information and awareness-raising film on the arms trade with Amnesty International.[5] His book Le coup de la girafe was published on 2 April 2015 by Éditions du Seuil.[6] It received good reviews in the scientific media.[7][8][3] Four days later, he took part in the Vulgarizators conference at the École normale supérieure de Lyon with Bruce Benamran (creator of the e-penser YouTube channel), Patrick Baud (creator of the Axolot YouTube channel) and the blogger Marion Montaigne (creator of the Tu mourras moins bête YouTube channel).
In October 2017, when his channel surpassed 500,000 subscribers, the comic strip La grande aventure du sexe, created with his brother Colas Grasset, was published by Editions Delcourt.[9] On March 13, 2019, he launched the channel Le vortex. Co-produced by Arte, Dailymotion and the CNRS, the project features several popularizers living in shared flats and discussing various topics at home.[10] He appeared in the first season with Clothilde Chamussy (Passé Sauvage), Viviane Lalande (Scilabus), and the Pause Process team. The second season was presented by Hygiène Mentale, Zeste de Sciences, Patrick Baud and Manon Bril.[11]
YouTube channel
[edit]Grasset sometimes collaborates with other youtubers as well as with the popular science blog Dans les testicules de Darwin. His brother Colas and the other authors of the COLAS BIM channel (formerly Ayeah!) have been involved in the production of animations for several episodes of DirtyBiology. Grasset's shows come in several formats: DBY (classic episodes), Let's Play Science! (interactive writing) and Ctrl+F (web searches). Their durations vary greatly but do not exceed half an hour. Through ad hoc collaborations he also helped to promote the Histoire brève channel created by Dave Sheik, bringing him an extra audience, for which Sheik thanked him publicly.
He also sometimes adopts a more academic tone by treating certain themes in the form of a documentary (L'origine de la richesse).
