Lily, Chloe, Amelia, and Rebecca are in their second-to-last year of high school at a junior prom. One night Chloe's brother Thomas takes Lily out onto the field where she tells him that she can not imagine leaving. The two are about to kiss when Rebecca and the others tell them that their limo has arrived. Lily drops Rebecca and Amelia off at home and then takes Chloe to meet Thomas in the mountains. The three go their separate ways and then Thomas is killed in a car crash on the way home. At the funeral, Chloe hugs her mom crying as Lily remains silent.
Best friends Lily, Chloe, Amelia, and Rebecca are at junior prom, where Chloe's brother Thomas shares a tender moment with Lily while discussing his upcoming move to college. As they are about to kiss, they are interrupted by their friends. On his way home from prom, Thomas is killed in a car crash.

A year later, the girls are in their final two weeks of high school. Chloe and Lily dream of attending college in New York City together, with the former attending NYU and the latter attending Columbia. Rebecca develops a crush on the school librarian, Mr. Bemis, while Amelia navigates her parents' divorce. Despite their challenges, the group decides to go to prom together.
One year later the girls are in their last year of high school. They arrive at the school stoned again. Lily talks with Noah about prom when their teacher tells them to go to class (not realizing it is his class). Chloe and Lily walk down the halls recalling how many times they have walked it. Lily then arranges multiple parties at various houses and then makes jokes about Mr Bemis. When the girls get back to the car they discover their Donkey Kong shaped bong named "Donkey Bong". Amelia reveals to Rebecca that her parents are getting a divorce and that she does not think they see her as anything more than an extent of their ego. Lily and Chloe go to see their drug dealer friend Biff who reminds them of Thomas's favourite marijuana strain “cough”.

While Lily is swamped with planning school celebrations, Chloe struggles with her grief. She is accepted to NYU, but contemplates going to UCSB instead to stay close to her family. Her friend Sam consoles her and asks her to prom, which she accepts.
Lily argues with the principal about what she is good and bad at doing. Chloe walks out onto the field remembering the previous year and plays Thomas's last voice message when Sam consoles and asks her to prom. Noah serenades Lily in an attempt to ask her to prom but fails. Lily and Chloe talk in the car when Rebecca barges in and tells them that a goth girl caught her pleasuring herself to her teacher, Bemis after she encountered him in the library. The girls then go to a house party. Noah arrives and attempts to apologise to her by offering her a joint and then proceeds to make out with her. Lily walks back into the house (unaware that Chloe has just been accepted into NYU) and smokes out of a makeshift garbage bag bong. The cops arrive when the girls find Rebecca in the bathroom and make fun of her after a bathroom incident.

Lily begins delegating responsibilities as Noah promposes to her via serenade, which she declines, yet they make out at a party afterwards. At another party, Chloe reveals her intention to attend UCSB, which upsets Lily. She retreats to a bedroom with Mike — whom she met earlier in the film — and he rapes her.
Lily and Sam sell prom tickets the next day when Lily finds out that Liv was traumatised. She tells her that James got her in trouble when he wrote a dirty joke on an essay. After she scolds James, Noah texts her and she goes over to his house where they both engage in oral sex. The next day Noah's ex threatens her to stay away from him and knocks over a goal keeper. The girls go to another house party when Chloe tells Lily she got into NYU but wants to go to UCSB. Lily does not take it well and begins freaking out; she goes to a room with a boy, Mike from another school who rapes her. Chloe, Rebecca and Amelia all ditch Lily who then waits outside alone until a taxi comes. Lily sits in the cab crying all the way home. The next morning the girls all go over to Lily's house shortly after which she flips out at Amelia and Rebecca for not telling her about Chloe's acceptance letter. The girls all then start badmouthing Lily after which she walks away. Chloe stops her and tries to tell her that she is being selfish for wanting her to be friends with people who did not know Thomas before he died. Lily continues to be stubborn, forcing Chloe to walk away. An angry Lily drives down the street with a flashback of Thomas playing in her head but stops when she sees Rebecca at a coffee shop with her potential roommate and mocks them until a police officer comes up to her. Trying to ask her why she is illegally parked, he then notices Donkey Bong in the back. Lily panics until the officer tells her that he would not ruin her life forever but that he is going to mess it up for at least a week. Lily is forced by her mum to smash Donkey Bong. Lily argues with her mum who tries to force her to smash the bong but after Lily walks away she does it herself and continuously swears. The girls all dodge Lily's calls, leaving her alone. Noah tries to talk to Lily but she remains stubborn, forcing him to walk away.

Lily confronts the girls for ditching her at the party and keeping Chloe's acceptance into NYU from her, and they reprimand her for her selfishness as they navigate their own struggles. She then complains to Noah over his ex's jealous comments, and he maintains he's solely interested in Lily, which she rebuffs and leaves him.
James talks to Lily who realizes she has been selfish. Lily's mum talks to her dad and tells him to come to her graduation if he cares. Chloe has flashbacks of her and the girls. Lily arrives at prom alone and eventually goes to the bathroom and cries. Rebecca talks to Bemis while Lily has a flashback of her and Thomas out on the field confessing that they love each other and it is not just a fling. Lily regrets doing what she did and apologises to Chloe for being intense about Thomas. Lily tells her that the pain will never go away but that she can not mourn what she could’ve been. The two make up and go back inside. Lily apologises to Amelia and Rebecca. The girls all go back inside and Chloe kicks Mike in the balls. Noah's girlfriend breaks up with him and walks off angrily. Sam takes a picture of the girls who then bury the remains of Donkey Bong who was smashed like Jon Bong Jovi, Sean Bongery and Bong Connery. Lily gives her graduation speech in front of her friends, then in front of the entire school and then it voice overs after her graduation. Bemis arrives and claims his real name is “Immanuel”. Noah congratulates Lily on her graduation speech and the two kiss. Lily gets a photo taken with her brother and her sister. Amelia then notices that her brownies (which she spiked with marijuana) were consumed by Rosa, who comments on how huge their heads are. The girls all look off into the great sky and distant Los Angeles as the movie comes to a close.

After her brother helps her realize her selfishness, Lily apologizes to the girls. It is revealed in a flashback that Thomas and Lily kissed and professed their mutual love at junior prom. She reconciles with Noah and the group celebrates.

Lily successfully gives her valedictorian speech at graduation, and her and Noah share a kiss. At their graduation party, Mr. Bemis introduces himself to Rebecca as "Immanuel", sharing a name with the philosopher they joked about at the beginning of the movie, and she introduces him to her parents. The girls enjoy one last joint together overlooking the city.

Plot

[edit]

While Lily is swamped with planning school celebrations, Chloe struggles with her grief. She is accepted to NYU, but contemplates going to UCSB instead to stay close to her family. Her friend Sam consoles her and asks her to prom, which she accepts.
