= Introduction = |
This is a fun and simple game. It's in the [[Wikipedia:Sandbox|Sandbox]] - feel free to join in! It's a good place to practice making links to articles and find interesting pages to edit on [[Wikipedia]]. |
The '''Department of Fun''' is dedicated to providing the [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia is a community|community]] of [[Wikipedia:Wikipedians|Wikipedians]], both [[Wikipedia:Guidance for younger editors|young]] and [[Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits|old]] editors, with things to make them stay at Wikipedia, indirectly improving the encyclopedia. Below, you can find a fun and simple game to play. |
== How to Play == |
By way of example, a game might start off with:
cat
. Then, the next person might add
cat, dog
. And after a few more rounds, we might get
cat, dog, pet, animal, forest, tree, ...
Please, if you have ideas for activities or competitions, do not hesitate to post them to the discussion page or join the Department of Fun. And above all, [[Wikipedia:Enjoy yourself|enjoy yourself]]! |
Simply, the game involves adding ''a single word'' to the list that is related to the previous one. Avoid repeating words, and keep the links tasteful! Please use only [[Help:Link#Wikilinks|blue links]] when associating. [[WP:PIPE|Piped links]] are acceptable in certain circumstances, such as
<nowiki>[[Queen (band)|Queen]]</nowiki>
. Clearly, as the game develops, one gets a pretty long list! If you're stuck for ideas, link to the last word in the list and add the first link that appears on that page as the next link. Thus [[Sebastian Junger]] would be followed by [[1962]], and [[Latin]] by [[ancient]]. |
__TOC__ |
Try to update the word count each time you add a word. The official limit for the main game is 400 words. Please note that this word limit should not be raised as well! |
==Introduction== |
Occasionally, it's good to have some ''branches'' that diverge the main game into several sections. The official limit for said branches is 80 words. Try not to make a branch when the main game is about to close down; that will only store your branch away in the archives. Please only branch when the word exists in the word list. |
This is a fun and simple game. It was originally a [[Wikipedia:Sandbox|Sandbox]] subpage and is part of the [[Wikipedia:Department of Fun|Department of Fun]] nowadays — feel free to join in! Why not? It's a good place to practice making links to articles and find interesting pages to edit on [[Wikipedia]]. We also welcome more players to join! You can help promote by adding the userbox below. At the bottom of the page is a template with links to other Word Association variations. |

==How to play== |
'''In spirit of the game, please only type one word consecutively!''' Then, another person can respond to your word, and the game continues! |
Simply, the game involves adding ''a '''single''' word'' to the list that is related to the previous one. Edit the main game or branch section, add a word, enclose it in brackets, update the word count, and save the page. Also, try to avoid miscounting if possible - make sure there are 10 words in at each 10th word! |
===An example=== |
= The Game = |
By way of example, a game might start off with:
cat
. Then, the next person might add
cat, dog
. And after a few more rounds, we might get
cat, dog, pet, animal, forest, tree, house, boat,
or even a [[Serbia|random country in Europe]], an [[Galaxy (British TV channel)|obscure British TV channel]], or even a fictional restaurant! |
This is Game Number 18. If you want to see game #17, go [[/Archive 17|here]]. Feel free to make branches if you wish. |
==Repeated words== |
== Main Word: Christmas== |
Avoid repeating words, and '''keep the links tasteful!''' ''Please use only [[Help:Link#Wikilinks|blue links]] when associating.'' [[Wikipedia:Piped link|Piped links]] are acceptable in certain circumstances, such as when a word may have many ambiguities, like
<nowiki>[[Queen (band)|Queen]]</nowiki>
. Clearly, as the game develops, one gets a pretty long list! If you're stuck for ideas, link to the last word in the list and add the first link that appears on that page as the next link. Thus "[[Sebastian Junger]]" would be followed by "[[The Perfect Storm (book)|''The Perfect Storm'' (book)]]", and "[[Latin]]" by "[[Classical language]]". |
In the spirit of the game, '''please type only one word consecutively'''. Then another person can respond to your word, and the game continues! |

:Languages and war were the major themes of this game, with felines, spiders and north-west England also making an appearance. |

== Psychadelic == |

(Psychadelic games feature unusual ultra ideas. Games are started by Xhin, Thryduulf, and Francs2000. ) |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 1|Psychadelic #1: Ten Islands]] |
:The first game of Psychadelic Word Association; featured ten words in random places. |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 2|Psychadelic #2: Four Flowers]] '''(Fruit! Corn! Roll! Cricket!)''' |
:Featured four unknown words that had to be guessed at. |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 3|Psychadelic #3: Five Kingdoms]] |
:In possibly the best effort of word associationists, you had to play the game like psychadelic #1, except all of the first letters are fixed, some of them t, e, a, e, or s. There were only three letters remaining at the end. Well done. |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 4|Psychadelic #4: Big Bang]] '''(Middle Class, Port Wine, Stage, Empire State Building)''' |
:In this edition, you had to Expand out the entire table from one word, reaching all four corners of an 8x8 grid. |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 5|Psychadelic #5: Elemental Oscillation]] |
:In this flavor, you had to-- Well, why don't you read the instructions for yourself? |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 6|Psychadelic #6: Alignment]] |
:Your run of the mill radial word association, with one exception... |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 7|Psychadelic #7: 10 more islands]] |
:A remake of game #1, this time the words were the names of [[island]]s and the word "island" was prohibited. |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 8|Psychadelic #8: Diamond association]] |
:A development on the 10 islands idea, except the starting words were placed in a diamond pattern around the board. |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 9|Psychadelic #9: Tens]] |
:Another 10 islands game, this time the words were all related to 10, so "10" and "Ten" were prohibited. |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 10|Psychadelic #10: Aether alignment]] |
:Ultra association, but words must associate to all adjacent ones and one from a list - which one depends on how many letters were in the previously added word! |
*[[/Psychadelic Archive 11|Psychadelic #11: Colour Chart]] |
:An Ultra Game, but if it's in a colored cell, it must also associate with the other word in that color. |
==Sliding Doors== |
(Sliding Doors associations are two parallel games of ultra association with the same start word) |
*[[/Sliding doors archive 1|Sliding doors #1]] '''("''Sliding Doors''" → "Dermatology" and "Province of Georgia") |
:Based on the film ''[[Sliding Doors]]'', this was two games of ultra fixed in one. This game inspired the other Sliding Doors associations. |
*[[/Sliding doors archive 2|Sliding doors #2]] '''("''Celtic literature''" → "Laser eye surgery" and "Sticky") |
:Two games of ultra association in one |
*[[/Sliding doors archive 3|Sliding doors #3]] ("'''Parallel universe'''" → "'''GDR'''" and "'''PDA'''") |
:One game featured the Soviet Union heavily, while Star Trek and insects featured in the other. |
*[[/Sliding doors archive 4|Sliding doors #4]] ("'''Twins'''" → "''''Sugar'''" and "'''Manchester'''") |
:One game was quite eclectic with astrology, deities, queens and sweets. London and Manchester predominated in the other. |

*[[/Enigmatic Archive 1|Enigmatic #1]] '''(Scratching post, Garfield:The movie, pink panther, Dowsing rod, the internet movie database.)''' |

:The first game of Enigmatic. Was like a condensed version of psychadelic #2. |
*[[/Enigmatic Archive 2|Enigmatic #2]] '''(Tuxedo, Channel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Tutles, Dominoes, Microwave)''' |
:Like the first Enigmatic game, although this took a little longer. |
*[[/Disassociation archive 1|Disassociation #1]] ('''"Chaos"''' → '''"The End"''') |
:Like the normal assocation games, but with words not associated with the previous one. |
*[[/Ultra Fixed disasociation archive 1|Ultra Fixed word disassociation #1]] ('''Chaos''' → '''Not over until the fat lady sings''') |
:Like the Ultra Fixed association games, but the words ''don't'' associate with each other. |
*[[/Ultra Fixed disasociation archive 2|Ultra Fixed word disassociation #2]] ('''River Ystwyth''' → '''Gastropub''') |
:Same as last time but with different disassociations. |
*[[/Ultra Fixed disacociation archive 3|Ultra Fixed word disassociation #3]] ('''Goulash''' → '''The Song That Never Ends''') |
:Same as last two times but with different disassociations. |
*[[/Ultra disassociative vortex archive 1|Ultra disassociative vortex #1]] |
:Associate with a spiral of disassociated words. |
*[[/Dealer's Choice Archive 1|Dealer's Choice #1]] ('''Dealer's choice''' → '''''Mean Streets''''') |
:Each player adds one word, and selects location of next move, and whether to associate or disassociate. |

This is the Wikipedia:Department of Fun/Word Association task force, an area for focused collaboration among Wikipedians. New participants are welcome; please feel free to participate!
The Department of Fun is dedicated to providing the community of Wikipedians, both young and old editors, with things to make them stay at Wikipedia, indirectly improving the encyclopedia. Below, you can find a fun and simple game to play.
Please, if you have ideas for activities or competitions, do not hesitate to post them to the discussion page or join the Department of Fun. And above all, enjoy yourself!
Introduction
[edit]This is a fun and simple game. It was originally a Sandbox subpage and is part of the Department of Fun nowadays — feel free to join in! Why not? It's a good place to practice making links to articles and find interesting pages to edit on Wikipedia. We also welcome more players to join! You can help promote by adding the userbox below. At the bottom of the page is a template with links to other Word Association variations.

How to play
[edit]Simply, the game involves adding a single word to the list that is related to the previous one. Edit the main game or branch section, add a word, enclose it in brackets, update the word count, and save the page. Also, try to avoid miscounting if possible - make sure there are 10 words in at each 10th word!
An example
[edit]By way of example, a game might start off with: cat
. Then, the next person might add cat, dog
. And after a few more rounds, we might get cat, dog, pet, animal, forest, tree, house, boat,
or even a random country in Europe, an obscure British TV channel, or even a fictional restaurant!
Repeated words
[edit]Avoid repeating words, and keep the links tasteful! Please use only blue links when associating. Piped links are acceptable in certain circumstances, such as when a word may have many ambiguities, like [[Queen (band)|Queen]]
. Clearly, as the game develops, one gets a pretty long list! If you're stuck for ideas, link to the last word in the list and add the first link that appears on that page as the next link. Thus "Sebastian Junger" would be followed by "The Perfect Storm (book)", and "Latin" by "Classical language".
In the spirit of the game, please type only one word consecutively. Then another person can respond to your word, and the game continues!
Rules
[edit]Players can only play one associated word at a time. If the current word is chair, the next player can only add musical chairs, not musical chairs and party games as well.
In game, as usual, it is a must to update the word count each time you add a word. The official limit for the main game is 555 words. Please note that this word limit for this game must not be raised or lowered.
Every 100th word may be made into a new branch. However, there cannot be any sub-branches and therefore the total number of branches possible in this game are 5. Branches may contain up to 100 words maximum and 35 minimum.
Please also add every ten words to show it is the next tenth word e.g. , etc.
For Game #33, in which the starting word was Hook sword and the ending word was Tangent bundle, with branches John Laroquette (went to Knobbed hornbill), Santa Claus (went to Cuckoo clock), Anti-Monopoly (went to Pronunciation of English ⟨th⟩), Missouri State Bears (went to Linda Lavin), and Löwenmensch figurine (went to Cape (geography)), see this link.
This is Game #34. The starting word, Hackelia sharsmithii, was selected by Special:Random.
