Just a note following on from recent events...

Whether my work on COI issues was good, bad, mixed or indifferent, you are aware (probably better than anyone) that it was work that I had mixed feelings about and which I had previously made certain efforts to disentangle myself from.

I was glad when I was sometimes able to bring about positive results, but dealing with a great many bad faith users (some of whom were very abusive) was highly unpleasant work which had a very negative effect on me off-wiki. I was also becoming increasingly aware that the COI issues raised at COIN were only the tip of a much larger iceberg. This inevitably resulted in a recurring sense of futility.

It seems an open question how the votes on the proposals at ANI would have resolved themselves, but I hopefully have enough self-awareness to appreciate that the thread had played itself out in a way that made it unfeasible for me to continue doing that kind of work. That is a situation which in many ways I welcome and I'm looking forward to stepping away.

You know that I have always been very grateful for your thoughts and advice. I think I am now closing the chapter on my COI work so I just wanted to mark that event by thanking you again for keeping me (relatively) sane in some (relatively) dark days.

(I'm aware that other users may read this post, so for the benefit of others I will add that the assistance referred to here was of a purely pastoral nature and all of my misdeeds were solely my own responsibility(!).)

@Axad12 I think we often need to take a pause, perhaps a total break, from work we once thought to be either or both of extremely important and extremely urgent. It is a wise person indeed who recognises when the time has come for that break. I commend you for the decision.

That does not in any way diminish your work here so far. You have worked diligently, inquisitively, and hard. You have worked for the benefit of Wikipedia, and worked in a difficult area.

I do not think anything can truly be categorised as a misdeed; misadventure might be a better description. Misdeeds are made with ill will, and I have never seen you exhibit ill will.

Perhaps an area you might enjoy would be AFC (the first gatekeeper against unsuitable articles) or NPP (the second gatekeeper with a wider remit). While either can sometimes touch on COI that is an area you can avoid by passing on reviewing any suspected COI draft or article (without making any comment on it), and allowing another reviewer to pick those up.
