Emily Mahin "Em" Beihold[2][3] (/ˈbhld/;[4] born January 21, 1999) is an American singer-songwriter. She released her debut EP Infrared in 2017.[5] In 2020 she was noticed by music promotion brand Live2 LCC who then teamed with her to help promote her music.[6] After signing to Republic Records and Moon Projects, she released her major-label debut single "Numb Little Bug" in 2022 leading to her being well known.[1] On July 22, 2022, Beihold released her second EP, Egg in the Backseat.[7]

Early life and education

[edit]

Emily Beihold was born on January 21, 1999,[8] in Los Angeles.[9] Her mother, Zahra Dowlatabadi, immigrated from Iran to the United States during the Iranian Revolution in the late 70s.[10][11] At the age of six, Beihold saw a piano in a shop window and begged her parents to let her learn the piano; she began writing songs when she was seven.[7] Her first song was a patriotic song, "America Home".[9][12]

In 2017, Beihold attended the University of California, San Diego and competed in the NCAA Fencing Championships receiving NCAA All-American Honors in 2019.[13]

Career

[edit]

In the film I'm Not Here, director Michelle Schumacher invited Beihold to write a track for the film. She wrote the song, "Not Who We Were".[9]

She released a string of singles after that and gained attention on the social media platform TikTok for her song "City of Angels". On May 28, 2021, Beihold released her song "Groundhog Day", which too gained popularity via TikTok. Next she signed with Republic Records, with whom she released her most successful single, "Numb Little Bug".[1] In May 2022, she released a single "Too Precious". On July 22, 2022, she released her second EP, Egg in the Backseat, which explored themes of her mental health problems and her relationships.[7] On July 27, 2022, she signed to Sony Music Publishing.[14]

Beihold began touring in 2022 and opened for King Princess,[15] AJR, and the Jonas Brothers.[16] In 2023, she opened for Lewis Capaldi.[17] In 2024, she embarked on the Maybe Life Is Good Tour, her first tour as a headlining act.[18]

Musical influences

[edit]

Beihold cites Queen and Regina Spektor as being her influences and grew up listening to Feist, Fiona Apple, Kate Nash, Sara Bareilles,[19] and Lily Allen.[9]
