Shahal Khan’s consortium signed the contract to buy the Plaza hotel in New York City in May 2018, paid the deposits and went to closing. The purchase was then challenged by the Azkenazy Group and Prince Al Waleed bin Talal as per a right-of-first- refusal (ROFR). Which they had established from a previous contractual agreement with Sahara Group and this had given them an extra month to finish the deal. Upon expiry of the ROFR they did not consumate the transaction and it was then decided to forward sale of the hotel to Qatar Holdings. This decision was made jointly by Khans group and the sellers.

Khan was born in New York, United States, of Indian and Pakistani heritage. He received a bachelor's degree in economics from American University and a master's degree in international development from the Johns Hopkins University Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.[12] Khan primarily resides in Washington, D.C., Dubai, and the Portuguese Riviera (Quinta da Beloura, Sintra).[13]
