The Arora sisters, Preeta and Srishti, move to Mumbai to fulfill their father’s dying wish of reuniting with their mother, Sarla. Preeta becomes a physiotherapist for Bani Luthra, the matriarch of the Luthra family. While the elder grandson, Rishabh, shares a cordial bond with her, the younger one, Karan, a cricket star, has a strained relationship with her. Preeta and Karan slowly develop a friendship that turns into love, though neither confesses their feelings.
Arora sisters Preeta and Srishti leave their hometown Nasik after the death of their father, Raghuveer Arora, who before dying asked his daughters to go to Mumbai and reunite with their mother, Sarla Arora.

Preeta meets the Luthra family and is appointed as a physiotherapist to their matriarch, Bani Luthra, whose younger grandson Karan, a popular cricket star, shares an adversarial relationship with her while the elder grandson Rishabh, a successful business tycoon, shares a rather cordial relationship. Karan and Preeta's alliance slowly blossoms into friendship and they gradually fall in love but don't confess it. On the other hand, Srishti falls in love with Sameer, who is Rishabh and Karan's younger cousin.

Rishabh is soon to marry Sherlyn, who has a secret affair with Preeta's fiancé, Prithvi. Karan and Preeta discover Sherlyn's secret affair. They vow to prevent Sherlyn and Rishabh's marriage but Sherlyn marries Rishabh as Karan and Preeta fail to expose her. Sherlyn lies to Karan that she bribed Preeta with money to not expose her. Mahesh learns Sherlyn's truth but before he could tell anyone, he has an accident because of Sherlyn and Prithvi and is left comatose. Sherlyn lies to the Luthras that Preeta was behind Mahesh's accident and they also start hating Preeta, except Rishabh. Because of the misunderstanding, Karan starts loathing Preeta.

On the day when Preeta was to marry Prithvi, Karan takes his place in the mandap and marries her out of spite. Kareena fixes Karan's marriage with his childhood friend and obsessive one-sided lover, Mahira. However, Preeta remarries Karan by replacing Mahira and returns to the Luthra house. Preeta soon expels Mahira from the house. Mahesh wakes up from coma but has amnesia.

Though Karan and Preeta resolve their differences but their enemies, Sherlyn and Prithvi, create obstacles to separate them. Soon Prithvi tries to manipulate Kritika with mind games to marry her and eventually he succeeds and they marry.

===3 months later===

Preeta realises that she is pregnant but soon she discovers it was a false pregnancy, saddening her and her family. They then adopt a child, Pihu. It is later revealed that Karan's college friend and one-sided lover, Sonakshi, made Preeta believe that it was not possible for her to conceive and the former gave her pills which unknowingly stopped her from conceiving. Sonakshi hires a goon to create an accident, in which Pihu dies, and the entire Luthra family blame Preeta for it and expel her from the house. Karan expels Sonakshi from his house for coercing him to marry her. Preeta leaves for Bengaluru with her grandmother.

===2 years later===

Preeta is back in Mumbai and works as a physiotherapist at a clinic. She accidentally meets Mahesh who is delirious and has been confined in a mental institution. She then goes to the Luthra mansion where she learns about what happened in the past two years where Prithvi captured the Luthras' property and business, and that Mahesh suffers from mental illness because of Prithvi. Sherlyn and Prithvi bring a con woman named Natasha in the house to seduce Karan, so that he forgets Preeta but fails.

Preeta reenters the Luthra mansion by presenting Mahesh's will defeating Prithvi's attempt to confiscate the Luthra property and business. She then resolves the family's problems and brings Rishabh back, who was stuck in Dubai due to a case plotted against him by Prithvi and Sherlyn. Rishabh exposes them. Thus, Sherlyn and Rishabh as well as Kritika and Prithvi get divorced. The Luthras overcome their hatred towards Preeta and accept her as their daughter-in-law.


Rishabh is set to marry Sherlyn, but Preeta and Karan discover that Sherlyn is having an affair with Preeta's fiancé, Prithvi. Despite their attempts to stop the wedding, Sherlyn manipulates the situation, and Karan, influenced by misunderstandings, starts hating Preeta. On the day of Preeta’s wedding to Prithvi, Karan takes his place, marrying her out of spite but soon abandoning her. Kareena arranges for Karan to marry Mahira, his obsessive childhood friend. Preeta then replaces Mahira and marries Karan. Despite their reconciliation, Karan and Preeta face more obstacles as Sherlyn and Prithvi continue to scheme against them.
Sherlyn and Natasha convince Karan that Preeta and Rishabh are having an affair. Natasha and her boyfriend Roxy, push a drunk Karan off the dam and he is presumed to be dead. They then go into hiding. Preeta discovers that she is pregnant with Karan's child. The Luthras perform the custom, Chadar Andazi, where Rishabh marries Preeta to give her child a paternal identity.


Three months later, Preeta and Karan adopt a child, Pihu. Sonakshi, Karan’s college friend, tries to separate them due to her obsession with Karan. Sonakshi arranges for a goon to cause an accident that results in Pihu’s death. Preeta is blamed for the accident and removed from the Luthra house, while Karan expels Sonakshi for coercing him into marrying her.

Two years later, Preeta returns to Mumbai from her hometown. She meets Mahesh, who is now mentally unstable after being tortured by Prithvi. She learns that Prithvi has taken control of the Luthra business and is exploiting the family. With Mahesh’s will, Preeta re-enters the Luthra mansion and exposes Prithvi’s schemes. She helps Rishabh return from Dubai, where he had been trapped by Prithvi, and they both expose Sherlyn and Prithvi. Sherlyn and Natasha try to convince Karan that Preeta and Rishabh are having an affair. Karan is manipulated into believing this, and he is later pushed off a dam by Natasha and Roxy. He is presumed dead. Preeta, who is pregnant with Karan's child, marries Rishabh for the child’s legitimacy. Preeta gives birth to a daughter, Kavya.
Preeta has given birth to her and Karan's baby, a daughter, Kavya. She and Rishabh have a marriage in name only, moreover share a friendly and respectful relationship. Srishti and Sameer are now married. Sherlyn and Prithvi are also married, but poor.


Karan is revealed to be alive but has suffered a memory loss plus plastic surgery after his accident. He is now known as Arjun Suryavanshi and is engaged to a businesswoman named Nidhi Hinduja who saved him. Later he regains his memory and sets out to destroy Rishabh and Preeta because he believes that they pushed him off the dam. He is accompanied by Nidhi's sister, Anjali.
Five years later, Karan is revealed to have survived the accident but suffered memory loss and undergone plastic surgery. He returns as Arjun Suryavanshi and is engaged to Nidhi Hinduja, who saved him. As Arjun, Karan tries to destroy Preeta and Rishabh, believing they pushed him off the dam. Eventually, after learning Karan's true identity, Preeta and Rishabh prove their innocence through CCTV footage. Karan regains his memory and reconciles with Preeta. He severs ties with Nidhi. After a few months, Karan and Preeta have fraternal twin sons, Rudraksh and Shaurya. Nidhi's sister, Anjali, who is obsessed with Karan, kidnaps Rudraksh. However, after a series of events, she dies in a confrontation. Preeta is once again blamed for the chaos and leaves the family, but she saves Rudraksh. It is presumed by the Luthras that Preeta and Rudraksh have died.


Twenty years later, Preeta and Srishti have relocated, and Srishti has raised Preeta’s son, Rudraksh, whom she renamed Rajveer. Preeta, who lost her memories after the accident, suffers from panic attacks. Rajveer, now grown up, learns about his true parentage and returns to Mumbai with a determination to reclaim Preeta’s honor. Meanwhile, Rajveer gets a job at Karan’s company, and Shaurya grows insecure about Rajveer and plots against him. Rajveer and Palki fall in love, while Nidhi and Shaurya continue to plot against Rajveer and Preeta. The Luthra family slowly begins to accept Preeta again. Kavya's fiancé, Varun, is revealed to be Prithvi and Sherlyn's son, Shelly, who came to take revenge. The relationship is called off. Rajveer is appointed CEO of Luthra Industries. Soon, Preeta realizes Shaurya's scheming, and a huge confrontation ensues, with Nidhi blaming Shaurya's actions on Rajveer. In a fit of rage, Rakhi and Mahesh end up revealing Rajveer's true identity in front of Preeta, triggering her memory. She collapses into a coma, and the family prays for her recovery.
After some machinations by Anjali, Karan takes over Luthra mansion. He offers to allow the family members stay in the house if Preeta marries him. Preeta gets several clues that Arjun is Karan so she agrees to his terms. Rishabh and Preeta divorce despite the judge declaring their marriage to be invalid, the latter marries Karan, angering Anjali who is obsessed with Karan. The Luthras discover that Arjun is in fact Karan. Karan reveals his mission to destroy Rishabh and Preeta as he believed they pushed him off the dam. Rishabh and Preeta prove themselves innocent by showing him the CCTV footage of the dam on the day of his accident. Thus, Karan and Preeta reunite and Karan severs his ties with Anjali after learning of her misdeeds. The Luthra family have Natasha and Roxy arrested when they learn their truth.

Later, Preeta gives birth to fraternal twin sons, Rudraksh and Shaurya. Karan has Anjali arrested when she tries to kidnap Rudraksh, but soon she escapes from jail and hits them with a truck and kidnaps Rudraksh once again. Karan's face is disfigured and he falls into a coma. Preeta escapes from the accident, however the Luthras blame her for everything and expel her from the house, keeping Kavya and Shaurya with them. Preeta saves Rudraksh from Anjali and Anjali falls off a cliff and dies. Srishti then separates from Sameer due to his mistrust of her sister and for how the Luthras mistreated Preeta. Preeta leaves the Luthra Mansion with Rudraksh and Srishti while the Luthras presume Rudraksh and Preeta dead.

===20 years later===

Rudraksh was renamed to Rajveer by Srishti after Preeta lost her memory, and the three of them live separately away from the city life. Preeta and Rajveer are unaware that they are biological mother and son, and he thinks Srishti is his mother and Preeta is his aunt. Preeta still feels traumatized whenever she tries to remember her past memories. Rajveer grows up to be generous and kind-hearted. On the other hand, Shaurya lives with the Luthras and has grown up spoilt and over-pampered and he thinks Nidhi, who is now Karan's wife, is his mother. Karan, who came out of coma amidst the leap, has become a stern business tycoon and still mourns the supposed deaths of Preeta and Rudraksh.

Rajveer overhears Srishti about him being Preeta's son and questions her and she reveals Preeta's past and the fact that he has a twin brother named Shaurya. After hearing everything, he vows to return Preeta's honour and make the Luthras realize their past mistakes. Srishti reveals about Karan's marriage with Nidhi making Rajveer, who once considered Karan as his business idol, hate him and he decides to move to Mumbai with Preeta.

Kundali Bhagya (transl. The Fate of Our Horoscope) is an Indian Hindi-language romantic drama television series created by Ekta Kapoor and produced by Balaji Telefilms. A spin-off of Kumkum Bhagya, it premiered on 12 July 2017 on Zee TV. The show featured Shraddha Arya, Dheeraj Dhoopar, Manit Joura, Shakti Arora, Shakti Anand, Paras Kalnawat, Sana Sayyad, Baseer Ali, and Adrija Roy.[1][2][3] After airing for nearly 7.5 years, the show went off-air abruptly on 6 December 2024, completing over 2000 episodes.[4][5][6]

Plot

The Arora sisters, Preeta and Srishti, move to Mumbai to fulfill their father’s dying wish of reuniting with their mother, Sarla. Preeta becomes a physiotherapist for Bani Luthra, the matriarch of the Luthra family. While the elder grandson, Rishabh, shares a cordial bond with her, the younger one, Karan, a cricket star, has a strained relationship with her. Preeta and Karan slowly develop a friendship that turns into love, though neither confesses their feelings.

Rishabh is set to marry Sherlyn, but Preeta and Karan discover that Sherlyn is having an affair with Preeta's fiancé, Prithvi. Despite their attempts to stop the wedding, Sherlyn manipulates the situation, and Karan, influenced by misunderstandings, starts hating Preeta. On the day of Preeta’s wedding to Prithvi, Karan takes his place, marrying her out of spite but soon abandoning her. Kareena arranges for Karan to marry Mahira, his obsessive childhood friend. Preeta then replaces Mahira and marries Karan. Despite their reconciliation, Karan and Preeta face more obstacles as Sherlyn and Prithvi continue to scheme against them.

Three months later, Preeta and Karan adopt a child, Pihu. Sonakshi, Karan’s college friend, tries to separate them due to her obsession with Karan. Sonakshi arranges for a goon to cause an accident that results in Pihu’s death. Preeta is blamed for the accident and removed from the Luthra house, while Karan expels Sonakshi for coercing him into marrying her.

Two years later, Preeta returns to Mumbai from her hometown. She meets Mahesh, who is now mentally unstable after being tortured by Prithvi. She learns that Prithvi has taken control of the Luthra business and is exploiting the family. With Mahesh’s will, Preeta re-enters the Luthra mansion and exposes Prithvi’s schemes. She helps Rishabh return from Dubai, where he had been trapped by Prithvi, and they both expose Sherlyn and Prithvi. Sherlyn and Natasha try to convince Karan that Preeta and Rishabh are having an affair. Karan is manipulated into believing this, and he is later pushed off a dam by Natasha and Roxy. He is presumed dead. Preeta, who is pregnant with Karan's child, marries Rishabh for the child’s legitimacy. Preeta gives birth to a daughter, Kavya.

Five years later, Karan is revealed to have survived the accident but suffered memory loss and undergone plastic surgery. He returns as Arjun Suryavanshi and is engaged to Nidhi Hinduja, who saved him. As Arjun, Karan tries to destroy Preeta and Rishabh, believing they pushed him off the dam. Eventually, after learning Karan's true identity, Preeta and Rishabh prove their innocence through CCTV footage. Karan regains his memory and reconciles with Preeta. He severs ties with Nidhi. After a few months, Karan and Preeta have fraternal twin sons, Rudraksh and Shaurya. Nidhi's sister, Anjali, who is obsessed with Karan, kidnaps Rudraksh. However, after a series of events, she dies in a confrontation. Preeta is once again blamed for the chaos and leaves the family, but she saves Rudraksh. It is presumed by the Luthras that Preeta and Rudraksh have died.

Twenty years later, Preeta and Srishti have relocated, and Srishti has raised Preeta’s son, Rudraksh, whom she renamed Rajveer. Preeta, who lost her memories after the accident, suffers from panic attacks. Rajveer, now grown up, learns about his true parentage and returns to Mumbai with a determination to reclaim Preeta’s honor. Meanwhile, Rajveer gets a job at Karan’s company, and Shaurya grows insecure about Rajveer and plots against him. Rajveer and Palki fall in love, while Nidhi and Shaurya continue to plot against Rajveer and Preeta. The Luthra family slowly begins to accept Preeta again. Kavya's fiancé, Varun, is revealed to be Prithvi and Sherlyn's son, Shelly, who came to take revenge. The relationship is called off. Rajveer is appointed CEO of Luthra Industries. Soon, Preeta realizes Shaurya's scheming, and a huge confrontation ensues, with Nidhi blaming Shaurya's actions on Rajveer. In a fit of rage, Rakhi and Mahesh end up revealing Rajveer's true identity in front of Preeta, triggering her memory. She collapses into a coma, and the family prays for her recovery.

Production

Filming

The production and airing of the show was halted indefinitely in late March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[10] Due to the outbreak, the filming of television series and films was halted on 19 March 2020 and expected to resume on 1 April 2020 but could not and the series was last broadcast on 24 March 2020 when the remaining episodes were aired.[11][12][13] After three months, the production and filming of the series resumed on 29 June 2020 and broadcast to resume from 13 July 2020.[14][15][16]

Casting

In January 2022, Supriya Shukla who played Sarla Arora, quit the show, saying, "I had done everything as Sarla but there was not much left for me to do".[17] In June of the same year, actor Dheeraj Dhoopar, who played Karan Luthra, also quit the series for personal reasons and was replaced by Shakti Arora.[18][19]

In January 2023, a twenty-year generation leap and a new generation of leads were announced.[20] Arora, who replaced Dhoopar as Karan, quit owing to the generation leap, stating he didn't want to play a father to grown-ups and wanted to explore other things.[21][22] Arora was then replaced by Shakti Anand after the leap.[23][24] Sanjay Gagnani, who portrayed Prithvi Malhotra, also announced his decisions to quit the series as he wanted to take up new opportunities.[25] Shraddha Arya, who portrays Preeta Luthra, decided to continue as a mother to the new generation. Later in March 2023, Sonal Vengurlekar, playing Anjali Hinduja, also announced her decision to quit after the generation leap because she didn't wanted to age onscreen.[26] Ruhi Chaturvedi, who portrayed Sherlyn Khurana, also quit right before leap as she wanted to explore more as an actress. However from June 2024 she made her appearance once again as Sherlyn.[27]

Paras Kalnawat and Sana Sayyad were introduced as new leads with Kalnawat as one of Preeta's twin sons, Rajveer Arora Luthra and Sayyad as Dr. Palki Khurana[28] while debutante Baseer Ali was cast as negative lead and another twin son of Preeta, Shaurya Luthra.[29][30][31] In the same month, Rose Sardana was cast to play Mahi Khurana, Palki's sister.[32]

In May 2023, Anjum Fakih portraying Srishti Arora, who had initially taken a break from the show for participating in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 13, later confirmed quitting as her role was no longer challenging after the leap,[33] but also said that she will return if the story requires her character,[34] and she reprised her role in July 2023, post her stint in the adventure-based reality show.[35] However she permanently quit the series in October 2023 to explore new projects by calling it the most difficult decision, and the storyline showcased Srishti ending up in coma with severe facial and physical burns due to Nidhi's murder attempt on her.[36][37]

Later Abhishek Kapoor who portrayed Sameer Luthra too quit the series to try new spaces as an actor.[38] In June 2023, Ira Sone portraying Nidhi quit the series and Akanksha Juneja replaced her.[39] Later in the following month, Mrinal Navell Chandra was cast to play grown-up Kavya Luthra replacing Ananya Gambhir who played Kavya's younger version,[40] while Aashish Trivedi was cast opposite her as Varun Gill and Guneet Sharma was cast to play his brother Rahul. But later on in June 2024 Varun's character was revealed to be Prithvi and Sherlyn's son Shelly Malhotra.[41][42] In the following month, Shalini Mahal joined the cast as Palki's sister Shanaya Khurana.[43]

In February 2024, Manit Joura portraying Rishabh Luthra quit after being a part of the show for seven long years saying that he realized his journey in the show was over and an intelligent actor knows where to stop.[44] While Rajesh Sharma replaced Farooq Khan as Goutam Gill in same month.[45] In May 2024, Sana Sayyad portraying Palki quit the series due to her pregnancy[46][47] and Adrija Roy stepped into her shoes opposite Paras Kalnawat.[48][3][49] In same month Baseer Ali playing Shaurya Luthra was rumoured to quit the show but the actor denied so. However he confirmed about him serving his notice period required prior quitting the series in following month. [50][51] The following month Mayanka Sharma Patel replaced Naina Gupta as Roma Gill who earlier replaced Gayatri Soham in February 2024.[52] Meanwhile Sanjana Phadke too reprised her role of Sanjana Khurana in same month after 2 years hiatus.[53]

Cancellation

On 19 November 2024, it was announced that the show would go off-air after a run of seven and a half years, with the final episode airing on 6 December 2024, hours after Shraddha Arya confirmed quitting the show due to her due date approaching.[54][4] Actors Shakti Anand and Paras Kalnawat revealed that it was a '"sudden and shocking move by the channel and production house", and that they were not informed or prepared for this decision until the last moment.[5]

Reception

Impact

Kundali Bhagya is one of the longest-running Indian television series. It took its generation leap on 16 March 2023 and completed its 1500 episodes on 10 April 2023.[55]

Anjum Fakih's character was slated to be negative after three months from the day of premiere of the show, but the love of audience to her positive character made the production revoke their decision.[56]
