The purpose of Toritodon in the games, anime, and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon—untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments—and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.<ref name=ign> Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire Review (page 1) Ign.com. Its Japanese name comes from the nudibranch gastropod Tritonia Diomedea.
<!--
Its name is derived from Gastropod, a generic name for a creature of the slug family.

Biological characteristics
Toritodon is based on a sea slug. It, along with its previous form, Shellos, exists in two forms found in different parts of Sinnoh. Western Toritodon have bovine-like horns with saurian ridges on their backs, while eastern Toritodon have backward-pointing horns and lacy back ridges. Toritodon, like its pre-evolution, is an example of allopatric speciation.

In the video games
Toritodon can have one of two abilities: the pre-existing Sticky Hold; and the new ability Storm Drain, which draws Water-type attacks to this Pokémon (a Water-type version of Lightningrod).

Toritodon is used by the Pokemon League Champion, Shirona, in the games. It is her lowest leveled Pokemon, at Level 60.
