How do I make a double brace tag such as <nowiki> {{inuse}} </nowiki> and is there a list of

:That's called a template. If you wanted to make <nowiki>{{blah}}</nowiki>, then you would go to [[template:blah]] and put the content there. [[User:Raul654|&rarr;Raul654]] 21:38, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)

I can't seem to make <nowiki> [[Image:Hydnjo.JPG]] </nowiki> thumbnail sized. I've uploaded it as a 2KB file but it still comes out BIG. Feel free to edit or explain so that I can edit. Also how can I reference that image without displaying it. I used "nowiki" for that image reference in this message but that requires some helpful soul to type it out rather than clicking on it.
Thanks, [[User talk:Hydnjo]]

::Firstly, you can display a reference to an image by including a colon at the beginning of the wiki-brackets, like this: <nowiki> [[:Image:Hydnjo.JPG]] </nowiki>, which displays this: [[:Image:Hydnjo.JPG]]. Secondly, it's okay to upload big (within reason), because you can use the [[Wikipedia:Extended image syntax]] to ''display'' a smaller version, but still have the large version available for users who want to see more detail. Thirdly, you can modify an uploaded image by uploading a modified copy with exactly the same file name -- you will be given the option to overwrite the original image. See also [[Wikipedia:Picture tutorial]] for more info and links. Best of luck to you! *My confusion about reloading an image may be the result of the way my browser (Safari) works. I had reloaded [[:Image:Hydnjo.JPG]] several times (take a peek at that page's history) but the initial BIG image kept showing up no matter which revision I called up. I tried logging out and into WP and emptying Safari's cache but to no avail. But,when I went back there after reading your response this morning the image was thumbnail size (how did you do that)! So today (as an experiment) I replaced that image with it's horizontal reverse (Heidi-left, Joe-right). Same thing happened (twice); the old image kept showing up. In desperation I restarted my computer and then all was fine. Question - does WP have a time delay when images are replaced or is my iMac browser ignoring my request to empty it's cache?

:The caching problem is probably on our end. Because the vast majority of our users are readers rather than editors, and every ''reader'' can be served the same page every time until the page changes, we lighten the load on our servers by using a layer of "Squid servers". The page request goes first to the Squid, which, if nothing has changed since the last cache, sends a cached copy of page to readers -- that is, non-logged in users -- without touching the main databases. When you're logged in, it's not supposed to send you a cached page, but sometimes it does, especially if there's a lot of traffic at the moment, or a lot of changes have been made to a page within a short time.

:In addition, if the Squids pass on the request to the main servers, there's a "round robin DNS" system which finds the machine with the lightest load at that millisecond, and sends your request there. MOST of the time, this is totally transparent, and MOST of the time, all of the physical servers are exactly in synch. When you run into a caching issue, though, it may be that traffic is high and either the Squids or the database servers are slightly behind in updating, or are serving a cached page instead of the latest update. It never takes long to catch up, and usually a user would never notice, but it ''is'' frustrating when you are trying to check that an improvement you made looks the way you want it to. (It's all very complicated, and I applaud our volunteer developers for making it work as well as it does!)

:Yes, the [[INFP]] is one of the MBTI categories -- only 1.5% of the population out there, or something. :) (Hope you enjoyed your stroll through my user pages...) Hi [[User:Jimbo Wales|Jimbo]],
:I'm fairly new around here and my wife is already complaining about your project. As I poke around and try to feel the edges, I am utterly impressed with the way I have been welcomed and helped (a beautiful personal touch) and, in particular, the devotion of the Admins (or Syops) that are so amazingly vigilant at identifying, reverting, and blocking those individuals who feel a need to soil anything that is unsoiled or helpful.

==Tip about thumbnails==
[[Image:HelloFromStepsOfBeiling.jpg|thumb|Standing at the steps of [[Beiling Park]], a historical tomb located in [[Shenyang|Shenyang,]] [[China]].]]

Hi, I noticed you were experimenting with different sized versions of your photo. It appears that the last version of your photo was manually resized to be thumbnail sized.

If you haven't tried it out yet, there is a thumbnail feature for JPEGs that allows you to keep a large picture linked to a smaller preview version that shows up on the page when you first view it.

For example, the example thumbnail to the right links to a larger version of a photo of my wife and I on vacation.

If you're really curious, there is a picture tutorial with a mind-boggling number of options [[Wikipedia:Picture_tutorial|on this page]], and another with fewer choices [[Wikipedia:Extended_image_syntax|on this page]].

[[User:Phe|phe]] : I reloaded an upside-down copy (see [[:Image:Hydnjo.JPG]]) but it still shows the earlier (right-side-up) image even after doing your reload suggestion. : Well look at that, in the time that it took to type this message to you, the image flipped upside-down. Strange - some kind of time delay to work through the system (I think).

Hello! Thanks for getting back to me on that Searles Castle issue. Occasionally, folks will start in on an article and realize the title is wrong. OR stands for "orphan", meaning the image isn't used. CV stands for copyright violation. We use these abbreviations on [[IFD]]. Hi! Thanks for getting back to me. Generally, single-sentence articles are speedy deletion candidates since they lack content. A short article is great, but there has to be more to it since this is a reference work. You can add things like the movie's year of release, its costars, differences between the movie and the original story or perhaps any odd stories related to the production. If I remember right, that's the same movie that NBC cut to back in 1968 before the end of an AFC football game since they thought the game was hopelessly over and went to the movie. Turns out the Raiders came from behind in the final few seconds to win. Tell ya what: I'll remove the speedy tag and let you have at it. Best, - [[User:Lucky 6.9|Lucky 6.9]] 22:39, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)
**Oops...wrong Heidi. The one in '68 was made for TV. I see now that an anon wrote the article (such as it is). Something like that can usually be tagged as a speedy without any problem. - [[User:Lucky 6.9|Lucky 6.9]] 22:44, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)
*LOL! Yeah, I noticed the "Heidi connection!" Too funny. Have a great weekend and hope you're still having fun here. - [[User:Lucky 6.9|Lucky 6.9]] 21:38, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)
*Oh, this is becoming ''fun''. Folks like you make editing here worthwhile. The screen name comes from my rather fortunate acquisition of a [[Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9]] for all of $99 just before discovering Wikipedia. Way I figured, it was a "lucky" break, but not quite a "lucky seven." So, the fractional "Lucky 6.9" was born. Car still needs work, but what a blast it is to drive! - [[User:Lucky 6.9|Lucky 6.9]] 01:11, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)
*Yeah, that "6.9" has raised an eyebrow or two in the past...hope you liked the article! The car's only badge is, in fact "6.9." There aren't any "450SEL" badges on it at all. Even the promo literature called it just "6.9." I owe you a ride! - [[User:Lucky 6.9|Lucky 6.9]] 01:37, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

:::I will admit, that is an odd one. For me the gadget simply fudges the headers on that table, I wonder if it's something to do with the unusual header style. Anyway, I'd suggest this is a question for [[WP:VPT|the technical error forum]], or maybe ask the editor who wrote that gadget, {{ping|User:TheDJ}}. [[File:Wikimania 2022 Vector (2022) Presentation.pdf|thumb|The slides to our latest Wikimania presentation]]
Hello! As a member of [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Usability|WikiProject Usability]], I wanted to draw your attention to a [[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Update_of_August_24|conversation currently underway on WP:VPR]] ([[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Defining_a_process_for_the_discussion_of_making_Vector_2022_the_new_default|see the beginning of the discussion]]) around adopting [[mw:Reading/Web/Desktop_Improvements|Vector 2022]] as the new default skin.

The [[mw:Reading/Web|Web team at the Wikimedia Foundation]] has been working on Vector 2022 for the past three years, collaborating with the English Wikipedia community as well as other wikis to ensure that the skin performs better qualitatively and quantitatively for readers and communities than the previous Vector skin. The goal of the new skin is to create a more welcoming and easier to use experience for readers and editors across the wiki. For more details, see our [[mw:Reading/Web/Desktop Improvements/Frequently asked questions|new FAQ]].
== [[User:Graibeard|Graibeard]] ==
Nothing goes unnoticed ;-) and that's good to see!<br>
You caught me between edits, I'm currently in the process of editing the old [[Marking out]] page to cover the more traditional usage. The delay is in part due to me attempting to tidy up any remaining wiki links to the original page's contents. It's unlikely I'll be revisiting the pro wrestling area so I figured I'd spend a bit of extra time on catching any mistakes I made. Thanks -- [[User:Graibeard|Graibeard]] 02:12, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

For the past couple of months, we have collected thoughts from the English Wikipedia community on what changes need to be made to the skin prior to it being considered ready for deployment. Our next step would be to start an RfC to assess whether the community considers Vedtor 2022 ready.
== Hound's Tooth ==

Prior to the beginning of the RfC, we wanted to draw your attention to the current conversation and encourage your feedback on the skin.
Hi! That article now looks more like a real substub than a vandal bot listing. At first, it just looked like more auto-generated booshwah from goodness-knows-where. * The sticky header makes it easier to access tools that editors use often. It decreases scrolling to the top of the page by 16%
* The new table of contents makes it easier to navigate to different sections. Readers and editors jumped between sections 50% more than with the old table of contents
* The new search bar is easier to find and makes it easier to find the correct search result from the list. This increased the amount of searches started by 30% on the wikis we tested on
* The collapsible sidebar allows readers and editors to choose whether they want to see the main menu or not. Our testing shows that this allows people to better focus on their current task - reading with a collapsed menu, or editing with an open menu
* The language switching menu makes it possible to switch languages without scrolling
* The user menu collects all user links in a single place, making it easier to understand what each link does. In testing, 71% of surveyed editors reported positive experiences with the new menu

::I'm not subtracting information am I? I just noticed that some of your street names were familiar to me, but not in Toronto. :::Moving them does nothing to solve this problem as the reader will still be redirected to the Toronto street, but now at a more ugly and cumbersome name. Unless disambiguation pages are created at the more generic name moving helps no one. Moreover the vast majority of the pages you moved will never even need to be disambiguated as in most cases Toronto is the only city in the world with a street by that name notable enough to have an article. - [[User:SimonP|SimonP]] 06:15, Mar 27, 2005 (UTC)

I didn't know exactly what to do but I thought that I would at least move them from ''Streetname'' to ''Streetname (Toronto)'' to reduce ambiguity (I probably should have alerted one of you guys instead). Anyway the folks that loaded the pages in the first place took issue with my having moved them to ''Streetname (Totonto)'' and they re-moved them back to ''Streetname''. I agree entirely with you in setting some minimum threshold for streenames to become an article. If my comments suggest otherwise then I apologize for not stating my position clearly. Hi Hydnjo, to answer your questions: first of all, the [[Virtual piano]] page apparently was never listed on VfD correctly: there is no link on [[Wikipedia:Votes for deletion]] to its subpage, so no one would ever have noticed its existence (how did you find it, by the way? I saw it going by this morning on Recent Changes). The normal policy is to list something for five days [[Wikipedia:Deletion_policy#Unlisting_a_page_from_VfD]] at which time an administrator makes a decision based on consensus. It sure looks to me like we have consensus to keep the page under a new title. I'm a brand-new admin (as of two days ago) and have never done this; guess now's as good a time to learn as any. :-) Oh, and anyone can move a page -- click the "move this page" link, and it leaves a redirect behind at the old page name. Hi Hydnjo, I noticed your comment on [[User:Kim Bruning|Kim Bruning]]'s page and thought I'd drop you a line. One, it looks like you inserted your comment in the middle of [[User:Kevin Rector|Kevin Rector]]'s comments. In general, it's best to add your section at the bottom of the page. While occasionally it makes sense to respond to individual sentences or paragraphs of a comment, it's probably better not to insert a new section heading with in it. I hope you don't mind if I rearrange the sections to restore his comment. Regarding [[User:SPUI]], I think that's unlikely. He has a quirky sense of humor, and added that himself (you'll also notice that he's listed himself as a suspected sockpupper of Jesus and of SPUI/jajaja). Actually, "SPUI" stands for "[[Single Point Urban Interchange]]"&mdash;SPUI is interested in roads and transportation, as you'll no doubt notice from his userpage. hydnjo (talk) 17:11, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hydnjo. This feature is turned on and off in Preferences>Gadgets>Testing_and_development. It is only designed to work in Safari and Firefox. Someguy1221 (talk) 21:17, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Someguy1221 for your response. I've had that box Make sure that headers of tables remain in view as long as the table is in view (requires Firefox v59 or Safari) checked off for some time now and I'm using Safari. It was working fine in the past but seems to have stopped working here (fixed by TheDJ). Any further suggestions? hydnjo (talk) 16:43, 25 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I will admit, that is an odd one. For me the gadget simply fudges the headers on that table, I wonder if it's something to do with the unusual header style. Anyway, I'd suggest this is a question for the technical error forum, or maybe ask the editor who wrote that gadget, @TheDJ:. Someguy1221 (talk) 20:54, 25 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Someguy1221 hydnjo maybe it's time to deprecate that thing. The browser vendors don't really seem interested in making progress on this functionality, so it's not likely to start working much better any time soon. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 08:18, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
well in this particular case, it mostly was due to the broken table definition. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 08:25, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
TheDJ thank you for the fix, it really is a useful feature that I would hate see go away. : ) hydnjo (talk) 16:25, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Thanks for contributing to the article Nicolle Wallace. However, do not use unreliable sources such as blogs, your own website, websites and publications with a poor reputation for checking the facts or with no editorial oversight, expressing views that are widely acknowledged as extremist, that are promotional in nature, or that rely heavily on rumors and personal opinions, as one of Wikipedia's core policies is that contributions must be verifiable through reliable sources, preferably using inline citations. Thanks! P.S. If you need further help, you can look at Help:Contents/Editing Wikipedia, or ask at the Teahouse. Thank you. KyleJoantalk 18:17, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback on Vector (2022) conversation

[edit]
The slides to our latest Wikimania presentation

Hello! As a member of WikiProject Usability, I wanted to draw your attention to a conversation currently underway on WP:VPR (see the beginning of the discussion) around adopting Vector 2022 as the new default skin.

The Web team at the Wikimedia Foundation has been working on Vector 2022 for the past three years, collaborating with the English Wikipedia community as well as other wikis to ensure that the skin performs better qualitatively and quantitatively for readers and communities than the previous Vector skin. The goal of the new skin is to create a more welcoming and easier to use experience for readers and editors across the wiki. For more details, see our new FAQ.

For the past couple of months, we have collected thoughts from the English Wikipedia community on what changes need to be made to the skin prior to it being considered ready for deployment. Our next step would be to start an RfC to assess whether the community considers Vedtor 2022 ready.

Prior to the beginning of the RfC, we wanted to draw your attention to the current conversation and encourage your feedback on the skin.

Our results from Vector 2022 at a glance
  • The sticky header makes it easier to access tools that editors use often. It decreases scrolling to the top of the page by 16%
  • The new table of contents makes it easier to navigate to different sections. Readers and editors jumped between sections 50% more than with the old table of contents
  • The new search bar is easier to find and makes it easier to find the correct search result from the list. This increased the amount of searches started by 30% on the wikis we tested on
  • The collapsible sidebar allows readers and editors to choose whether they want to see the main menu or not. Our testing shows that this allows people to better focus on their current task - reading with a collapsed menu, or editing with an open menu
  • The language switching menu makes it possible to switch languages without scrolling
  • The user menu collects all user links in a single place, making it easier to understand what each link does. In testing, 71% of surveyed editors reported positive experiences with the new menu

Thank you, OVasileva (WMF), SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 12:27, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:04, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
