::Certainly it should be in the Canberra project. In my opinion the shcools project is just too big , but you could add it in, but don't expect any support from that project, there are just too many pages in it, and most of the interest would be local. I've noticed a few suburb infoboxes that seem to have directions mixed up where they have the surrounding suburbs (eg. == Meeting perhaps? == |
|||
Hi there Canberra members. This might be cheeky but what the heck. I'm a fairly new member of Wikipedia and have come across a couple of other Canberrans crossing my path in Wikiland. I gather the West Australians get together every now and then. I'm wondering whether we would like to too. Would anyone be interested in meeting at the Bookplate at the National Library of Australia - where better for Wikipedians to meet? - this Saturday July 7 at 2.30pm? Would you please post your responses here or at my page? Of course, if you wish to stay anonymous that's fine but if you'd like to meet up let's do it. [[User:Sterry2607|Sterry2607]] 11:32, 2 July 2007 (UTC) |
|||
:I'd be happy to meet up with people sometime, but I'm afraid I can't do this Saturday, as I'm still out of the territory. If it can wait another week or so, I'll certainly try and come. [[User:Rebecca|Rebecca]] 12:13, 2 July 2007 (UTC) |
|||
:: Thanks for your prompt response Rebecca. I've heard from one person who can make this Saturday but not the next two after that. I'm OK the next few but not 28 July. Can you please give me a couple of dates that would suit you and I'll see what consensus we get. If I get enough for this week we'll go with that and then see what people would like to do from then on. If, however, a later date suits we'll organise that. OK? [[User:Sterry2607|Sterry2607]] 12:40, 2 July 2007 (UTC) |
|||
:::I should be back in Canberra some time around the 16th - any time after that should be fine. If it doesn't suit others to wait, however, perhaps I might be able to come along to the next one instead. :) [[User:Rebecca|Rebecca]] 12:52, 2 July 2007 (UTC) |

::::It looks like I have come along to this conversation too late for the meeting on the [[7 July]] but a weekday at lunch time at the National Libary could do for me. [[User:Graeme Bartlett|GB]] 11:14, 15 July 2007 (UTC) |

== Anything needed in/from/near/of Tuggeranong? == |
|||
Can anyone point me at articles pertaining to Tuggeranong that need further work? I've got a bit of time down in this part of the world, and would like to contribute what I can. [[User:Samwilson|—Sam Wilson (Australia)]] 04:50, 3 August 2007 (UTC) |
|||
:Nice to see another editor from Canberra around here! There's a whole lot of stuff in the Tuggeranong area that could do with some help. The [[Tuggeranong]] article itself isn't bad in terms of early history, but there's very little after suburban development actually began in the area, and the article doesn't have much other than history. The articles on individual suburbs could all do with some work, and photos of them would be fantastic if you happen to own a camera. [[Tuggeranong Town Centre]] is a pretty lousy stub, and could also do with a photo, and [[Centro Tuggeranong]] could do with some expansion. There's also the possibility of articles of articles on landmarks and such, but I'm not actually all that familiar with the area - in three years in Canberra, I've ventured down there all of once, so I can't really help with any more suggestions than that. [[User:Rebecca|Rebecca]] 05:23, 3 August 2007 (UTC) |
|||
Hi Sam — if you look at the [[Yarralumla]] article you can see what kind of detail and quality is needed to get the article to a featured article status. If you could add in the missing information on the Tuggeranong suburb articles there would be some progress forward. You could aim to get each article up to B grade at least! ==Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme== |
|||
As you [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2008-06-23/Dispatches|may have heard]], we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at [[Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Assessment|WP:ASSESS]]. |
|||
*The '''new C-Class''' represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class. |
|||
*The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of [[Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Assessment/B-Class_criteria|a rubric]], and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects. |
|||
*A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as [[Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Assessment/A-Class_criteria|described here]]. |
|||
Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at [[:Category:C-Class_articles]]. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. [[Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Index|The bot]] is already finding and listing C-Class articles. |
|||
Please [[Wikipedia_talk:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Assessment#WikiProject_responses|leave a message]] with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! == Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Canberra == |
|||
[[Wikipedia:Release Version|Wikipedia 0.7]] is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The [[Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team]] has made an [http://toolserver.org/~cbm/release-data/2008-9-13/HTML/ automated selection of articles for Version 0.7]. |
|||
We would like to ask you to review the [http://toolserver.org/~cbm/release-data/2008-9-13/HTML/Canberra.s0.html articles selected from this project]. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at [[Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7]]. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at [[Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations]]. |
|||
A [http://toolserver.org/~cbm/cgi-bin/problems.cgi list of selected articles with cleanup tags], sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with [[Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Copyediting|copyediting requests]], although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible. |
|||
We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at [[User:SelectionBot/0.7/C-2|this project's subpage]] of [[User:SelectionBot/0.7]]. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! == Suggested new category Local History - Canberra and region == |
|||
I notice there is a category called History of the ACT. Also the history of the ACT is very specific and prefaced on the creation of the capital territory but there is a whole 80 years of recorded history preceding this time. The local history of Canberra is a more appropriate one. However the history should also recognise the central role of Queanbeyan which is not part of the ACT but was the central commercial centre for the region prior to the 1960s. I am happy to discuss [[User:Chrisfromcanberra|Chrisfromcanberra]] ([[User talk:Chrisfromcanberra|talk]]) <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">—Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|undated]] comment was added on 05:53, 17 February 2009 (UTC).</span><!--Template:Undated--> <!--Autosigned by SineBot--> |

== Canberra day trip (Request some photos) == |

I'll be in Canberra on Monday however my time will be limited to about 4 - 5 hours. If you can list some articles that need newer photos or don't have photos I'll rate them on importance. [[User:Bidgee|Bidgee]] ([[User talk:Bidgee|talk]]) 05:50, 21 February 2009 (UTC) |
|||
:I think we're pretty good for most landmarks if I remember correctly. The main thing left outstanding is photos for suburb articles - if you could grab some of those (local shops are the obvious one, considering as they're in nearly every Canberra suburb) that would be great. == Coordinators' working group == |
|||
Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Coordinators' working group|WikiProject coordinators' working group]], an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators. |
|||
All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — <small>Delievered by [[User:ShepBot|<span style="color:green;">'''§hepBot'''</span>]]''' <small>([[User talk:ShepBot|<span style="color:red;">Disable</span>]])</small>''' on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:03, 28 February 2009 (UTC)</small> |

|||
On March 20th Liam ([[user:wittylama]] and I will both be in Canberra, meeting with lots of interesting folk from interesting orgs. One of our meetings will be a brunch around 9am. We would really like to meet up with local editors who are interested in helping make a "wiki conf" in Canberra around November happen. ==[[Wikipedia:Article alerts|Article alerts]]== |
|||
This is a notice to let you know about '''''[[Wikipedia:Article alerts|Article alerts]]''''', a [[WP:BOTS|fully-automated]] subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion|Articles for deletion]], [[Wikipedia:Requests for comment|Requests for comment]], [[Wikipedia:Peer review|Peer review]] and other workflows ([[Wikipedia:Article alerts#Workflows covered|full list]]). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found [[Wikipedia:Article alerts#Samples|here]]. |
|||
If you are already subscribed to ''Article Alerts'', it is now easier to [[Wikipedia talk:Article alerts/Bugs|report bugs]] and [[Wikipedia talk:Article alerts/Feature requests|request new features]]. We are also in the process of implementing a [[Wikipedia talk:Article alerts/News|"news system"]], which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the <code>display=none</code> parameter, but forget to '''give a link''' to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at [[Wikipedia talk:Article alerts]].<!--Addbot-WP-Message-Article-alerts-01--> |

== Canberra articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release == |
|||
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the [[Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team|Wikipedia 1.0 team]] for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were [[Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Article selection|selected based on their assessed importance and quality]], then article ''versions'' (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the [[WikiTrust]] algorithm. |
|||
We would like to ask you to review the [http://toolserver.org/~enwp10/bin/list2.fcgi?run=yes&namespace=0&pagename=&quality=&importance=&score=&limit=100&offset=1&sorta=Importance&sortb=Quality&filterRelease=on&reviewFilter=0&releaseFilter=1&projecta=Canberra Canberra articles and revisionIDs we have chosen]. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at '''[[Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8]]''' with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's [http://toolserver.org/~cbm/cgi-bin/problems.cgi articles with cleanup tags] and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at [[Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8]]. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th. |
|||
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as [[One Laptop per Child]] and [http://schools-wikipedia.org/ Wikipedia for Schools] to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with [[Wikipedia_talk:Version_0.8|your WikiProject's feedback]]! |

== Comment on the WikiProject X proposal == |
|||
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please '''[[meta:Grants:IEG/WikiProject X|review the proposal here]]''' and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my [[User talk:Harej|talk page]]. Thank you for your time! <small>(Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.)</small> [[User:Harej|Harej]] ([[User talk:Harej|talk]]) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC) |

Hello everyone! |
|||
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that '''[[Wikipedia:WikiProject X|WikiProject X]]''' is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, [[Wikipedia:WikiProject X|check us out]]! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! |
|||
'''Note:''' To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to [[Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter]]. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X. |

== Photo of ANZAC Parade == |
|||
There has been some disagreement lately about what photograph to use in the infobox for [[ANZAC Parade, Canberra]]. |
|||
I assert that [[:File:Canberra - Parliament from the Australian War Memorial.jpg]] is not a realistic colour, and that [[:File:Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg]] is a more accurate representation of the colour, but {{U|Bidgee}} apparently disagrees. |
|||
Disclosure: I took [[:File:Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg]] (while visiting from Perth), so I admit to being biased about its merits. |
|||
Could some Canberra locals please give an opinion as which photograph is a more accurate representation of the colour. [[User:Mitch Ames|Mitch Ames]] ([[User talk:Mitch Ames|talk]]) 07:37, 30 March 2015 (UTC) |

[[:File:Canberra - Parliament from the Australian War Memorial.jpg]] is wildly over-saturated by comparison. [[User:Weedwhacker128|Weedwhacker128]] ([[User talk:Weedwhacker128|talk]]) 20:11, 27 April 2015 (UTC) |
|||
::File:Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg has more realistic colour, but the other has better sunlight and more interesting sky. See [[:commons:Category:Land axis from the Australian War Memorial]] for other images that support the colour. [[User:Graeme Bartlett|Graeme Bartlett]] ([[User talk:Graeme Bartlett|talk]]) 21:31, 27 April 2015 (UTC) |

:::{{tq|"the other has better sunlight and more interesting sky"}} — which would be relevant if we were illustrating the weather in Canberra, but the photo is supposed to accurately represent the road (ie the subject of the article), not the sky. [[User:Mitch Ames|Mitch Ames]] ([[User talk:Mitch Ames|talk]]) 11:31, 28 April 2015 (UTC) |
|||
::::I agree that the orange in File:Canberra - Parliament from the Australian War Memorial.jpg is over-saturated. File:Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg also isn't great due to the gloomy weather - things are a bit more orange than that. [[User:Nick-D|Nick-D]] ([[User talk:Nick-D|talk]]) 11:38, 28 April 2015 (UTC) |
|||
:::::Any local Canberrans fancy taking a better-coloured photo, or tweaking the colour on either of the existing ones to make it more realistic? [[User:Mitch Ames|Mitch Ames]] ([[User talk:Mitch Ames|talk]]) 12:51, 16 September 2015 (UTC) |
|||
[[:File:Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg]] exists and appears to be far closer to reality than the current photo. The "interesting sky" mentioned above in the current image is also wildly over saturated. I would suggest that Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg be restored. == WikiConfererence Australia 2015 - Save the date 3-5 October 2015 == |
|||
Our first Australian conference for Wikipedians/Wikimedians will be held 3-5 October 2015. Organised by [[meta:Wikimedia Australia|Wikimedia Australia]], there will be a 2-day conference (Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October) with an optional 3rd day (Monday 5 October) for specialist topics (unconference discussions, training sessions, etc). The venue is the [[State Library of Queensland]] in [[Brisbane]]. So put those dates in your diary! Note: Monday is a public holiday is some states but not others. Read about it here: [[meta:WikiConference Australia 2015|WikiConference Australia 2015]] |
|||
As part of that page, there are now sections for you to: |
|||
* indicate your interest in possibly attending the conference (this is not a binding commitment, of course) |
|||
* add suggestions for topics to include in the conference: what you would like to hear/discuss (again, there is no commit to you presenting/organising that topic, although it’s great if you are willing to do so), or indicate your enthusiasm for any existing topic on the list by adding a note of support underneath it |
|||
It would really help our planning if you could let us know about possible attendance and the kind of topics that would make you want to come. If you don’t want to express your views on-wiki, please email me at kerry.raymond@wikimedia.org.au or committee@wikimedia.org.au |
|||
We are hoping to have travel subsidies available to assist active Australasian Wikipedians to attend the conference, although we are not currently in a position to provide details, but be assured we are doing everything we can to make it possible for active Australian Wikipedians to come to the conference. ==New 5000 Challenge for Australia== |

Hi, [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge]] and the wider [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge]] are up and running based on [[Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge]] for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Australia and Oceania like [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon|The Africa Destubathon]], which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Australia but fuelled by a contest if desirable to really get articles on every state/territory and subject mass improved. After every 100 articles done for Australia this would feed into the main Oceania one. I will start a smaller challenge for your area if there is the support. I would like some support from wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start anyway with some articles to make doing a Destubathon for Australia and Oceania worthwhile! == WikiProject collaboration notice from the [[WP:WPPORT|Portals WikiProject]] == |
|||
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them. |
|||
Portals are being redesigned. |
|||
The new design features are being applied to existing portals. |
|||
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{tl|Transclude lead excerpt}}. |
|||
The discussion about this can be found '''[[Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Portals#AWB_team_please_tackle_maintenance_run_on_intro_sections|here]]'''. |
|||
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members '''[[Wikipedia:WikiProject_Portals#Specific_portal_maintainers|here]]''', noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time. |
|||
=== Background === |
|||
On April 8th, 2018, an [[Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/RfC: Ending the system of portals|RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace]]. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals. |
|||
There's an [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2018-05-24/WikiProject report|article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject]]. |
|||
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals. |
|||
So far, 84 editors have joined. |
|||
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals/Newsletter archive|newsletter archive]]. |
|||
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the [[WT:WPPORT|WikiProject's talk page]]. |

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the [[User:WP_1.0_bot|WP 1.0 Bot]]! I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to [[WP:URS|unreliable sources]] and [[predatory journal]]s. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the [[Wikipedia:User scripts/Most imported scripts|39th most imported script on Wikipedia]]. The idea is that it takes something like |

*John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14. (<code><nowiki>John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.</nowiki></code>) |
|||
and turns it into something like |
|||
* John Smith "{{highlight|[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]|pink}}" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14. |
|||
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{tl|cite web}}, {{tl|cite journal}} and {{tl|doi}}. |

== Project-independent quality assessments == |
|||
Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at [[Wikipedia:Content assessment]], but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent [[WP:Village pump (proposals)/Archive_198#Project-independent_quality_assessments|Village pump proposal]] was approved and has been implemented to add a {{para|class}} parameter to {{tl|WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment. |
|||
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{tl|WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories. |
|||
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{tl|WPBannerMeta}} a new {{para|QUALITY_CRITERIA|custom}} parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. [edit]Following suggestion, I thougth I'd announce my availability and willingness to help with improving the articles on Canberra.
My particular interest in the moment is in photography. People may have noticed the images of the Canberra Hospital and the National Museum I added to the main Canberra article. If anyone has particular images of Canberra or things in Canberra that could use a decent photo, feel free to let me know and I'll see what I can do.
I'm still fairly new to Wikipedia editing and starting to get the hang of it all. --Myk 01:15, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
- Welcome to the project! Nice job on the hospital photo, the health section of Canberra had been image-less for a long time -- Astrokey44|talk 09:11, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
IP 203.217.59.148
[edit]Could someone else please look at the edits of IP 203.217.59.148 - see (contributions). I have reverted her changes to the Talk:History of Canberra showing her intention as a strike though instead. Not sure how to, or whether to, deal with her other edits. If someone thinks what I have done to Talk:History of Canberra is not appropriate let me know and/or revert--A Y Arktos 22:38, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- It looks like they have been removed again, they should probably stay removed since she just specifically asked for this. She should be able to remove comments especially as this statement means that she would not be making them GFDL: "Please honour my wishes and the wikipedia policy not to breach copyright - I have withdrawn my contributions." Editors should be able to remove their talk page comments if there are no further comments by other editors. And if there are there could be a note saying that there were comments there that had been removed. -- Astrokey44|talk 09:07, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team cooperation
[edit]Hello. I'm a member of the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing articles using these criteria, and we are are asking for your help. As you are most aware of the issues surrounding your focus area, we are wondering if you could provide us with a list of the articles that fall within the scope of your WikiProject, and that are either featured, A-class, B-class, or Good articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Do you have any recommendations? If you do, please post your suggestions at the listing of all active Places WikiProjects, and if you have any questions, ask me in the Work Via WikiProjects talk page or directly in my talk page. Thanks a lot! Titoxd(?!? - help us) 18:25, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Canberra railway station
[edit]Something not mentioned in this is the railway station. Other cities have individual transport projects, but since Canberra only has its one station, it deserves an article on its own. What do others think? (JROBBO 08:29, 10 April 2006 (UTC))
- Every other railway station in the country either has one or should have one. Canberra railway station is probably the best place to put it. Ambi 02:03, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- Since it's a proper name, Shouldn't that be Canberra Railway Station? --Myk 21:52, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- It's not really a proper name - it's just the railway station at Canberra - and lower case is what we've used elsewhere in the country. Ambi 00:12, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- stub started--A Y Arktos\talk 01:20, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
All Saints Church, Canberra
[edit]Can someone else please review the recent edits to All Saints Church, Canberra and associated discussion I have been having with an anon editor at Talk:All Saints Church, Canberra? After several reversions I would want my actions confirmed by others. The offending text is: "This historic building today is home to a vibrant Anglican community who value beauty in worship, strong teaching, and an active social conscience." --A Y Arktos\talk 21:44, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
- I agree the sentence should have been removed. It says nothing other than its anglican which is already mentioned -- Astrokey44|talk 00:16, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Infoboxes
[edit]I've added infoboxes to the last 34 suburb articles, mostly in Belconnen and Gungahlin. There are articles for a handful of planned Gungahlin suburbs that will need maps eventually. The 2001 census information is now even harder to find on the ABS website. There were a few suburbs that I couldn't find information for at all. I guess it'll all need replacing with 2006 census figures before long though. - Gimboid13 20:58, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
New contributor/ Gowrie
[edit]Hi. I've added some info to the Gowrie page, mainly statisics. I'm new to Wikipedia editing, and I would like to make a useful contribution to improving the Canberra-related articles, so if I'm doing something wrong, let me know. WA Burdett 12:04, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
New contributor/ACT Ambulance Service
[edit]Hi. I've added a new page on the ACT Ambulance Service, initially focussing on the history of the service. I'm interested in Canberra history (especially emergency services) and public education - both of which are pretty hot topics at the moment.
I'm also a newbie to Wikipedia editing (although have coded HTML before) - so as above, if I'm doing something wrong or violating some commonly held community convention, please let me know. --Alpha993 11:21, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
A couple of articles that might warrant creating
[edit]Considering the unprecedented nature of this year's budget and the controversy surrounding it, am I the only one that thinks that 2006-07 Australian Capital Territory budget might make for an interesting article? We certainly haven't heard the last of the issue, and won't for some time.
I've also been wondering if the Narrabundah caravan park debacle might warrant an article, considering the press attention it has been getting in Canberra, its ramifications for both political parties, and its status as an ongoing issue. Any thoughts? Rebecca 08:27, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
- Some of us would have a hard time bringing an NPOV to either topic at this stage - I am not sure one is supposed ot write such articles when one is angry :-) I also am not sure whether they are encyclopaedic or not. Do they belong in Wikinews instead and then we review it to bring them across? --A Y Arktos\talk 09:18, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
- I think this territory budget is likely to be historically important, and I was hoping that someone would write an article on the federal budget (though I think that's less notable than this territory one); IMHO, they have the potential to be quite interesting articles. I'm not sure if it's worth writing an article about them at Wikinews first - Wikinews is struggling somewhat, and I'm not sure anyone from Canberra even reads it. There should be plenty of press articles, anyway - it even made the front page of the Telegraph in Sydney today. I'm not so sure about Narrabundah, but the story doesn't seem to be going away any time soon, and it's probably going to flare up again in earnest when they actually do get evicted. Rebecca 10:05, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
- I have started a stub on the budget at 2006-07 Australian Capital Territory budget--A Y Arktos\talk 11:32, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Excellent. Is there any chance someone might update Andrew Barr and Jon Stanhope with the latest developments over all this? They're starting to get out of date, and I'd do it today, but if I don't actually get home and start preparing for my last law exam I'm going to fail. Rebecca 02:54, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
Would others like to look at 2006-07 Australian Capital Territory budget. What would you expect to find in an article about the budget? Comparisons with other jurisdictions might be something that would be interesting but too hard at the moment (for me anyway).--A Y Arktos\talk 12:25, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- The one major thing that would be helpful is a section about the reaction, which is why this budget is so notable. If possible, it'd be nice to have a bit more info about the public service mergers (i.e. ACTION no longer being a separate authority). I may be wrong, but I remember hearing that basically all the money for new public housing had also been cut, on top of what is listed in the housing section. Rebecca 04:14, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
Hi, I started this list ages ago - but have just moved it to the main namespace. There are lots of gaps to fill in if anyone is interested.--Peta 06:31, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Stub tags
[edit]I have been working on several Tuggeranong suburbs: Gowrie, Fadden, Macarthur, Gilmore and Chisholm. Have these suburbs reached the point where the stub tags can be removed, or do they need more information? If the latter, what are they lacking?
- Nice work Will. They're all well past the definition of a stub at Wikipedia:stub. I'd say go for it. - Gimboid13 10:24, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
Can I help?
[edit]I'm pretty much new to editing wikipedia, but if I could be of assistance, then I'd be more than happy to - though I'm not sure what I should do.
I'm especially happy to do work on schools in the ACT, if that's something useful.
If someone could give me a direction to work in, then that would be appreciated. Byron Vickers 10:58, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- Feel free to start wherever you're interested in - there's always work to do. Many schools could do with articles, but there's also plenty of room for work on ACT suburbs, landmarks and politics if you're interested in any of those. :) Rebecca 03:27, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Photos
[edit]Was anyone living in Canberra around the time Parliament House (the new one) was being built, and if so do you have pictures?--Peta 02:13, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Group Centres
[edit]I've noticed some of the larger group centres - Dickson, Kippax and Jamison, among others - have articles devoted to them. I'd like to know what others think of the smaller group centres, such as Calwell and Curtin. Should all of the group centres have articles, or just the major ones? WA Burdett 12:21, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
- The larger centres got them because they were important and more well known than the suburbs that contained them - for similar reasons to those that saw Manuka get its own article. I see no reason why the smaller centres could not just go in the suburb article. Rebecca 04:10, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with Rebecca. Another example is Erindale Centre in Wanniassa. Centres such as Calwell and Curtin could just be mentioned in the suburbs themselves. When you get to something like Bonython, for example, it's even smaller than Calwell and Curtin so it would be hard to find somewhere to draw the line. Tim 12:37, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think a good rule of thumb with these things is looking at whether the centre has a different name to that of the suburb it is located in. If it does, chances are it deserves a seperate article (perhaps with one or two exceptions). If it doesn't, I really can't see any need to have one. Rebecca 23:37, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
And another new contributor (Old Parliament House)
[edit]I added some more detail on Old Parliament House, as the article was fairly sketchy. I am new to this, so I hope it is useful and I have not violated any important conventions. Happy to contribute further articles on architecture over time. Maecenas 09:10, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Project directory
[edit]Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 16:27, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
New Infobox
[edit]A Canberra resident has started a topic on Template talk:Infobox Australian Place. The template being proposed will within a few weeks replace all Australian place templates, including Template:Infobox Canberra Suburb. We are going to try and accommodate the issue of ACT having districts rather than LGA's, but the name of the district will probably have to be entered in the LGA field but be correctly labelled on the final page.
The Canberra project team has kept the infoboxes nice and clean so in visual terms there will probably be little difference between what is there now and what will be. However, this will make available fields that have been developed for other Australian city projects (such as distance, climate etc). All the details are on the page above. Please feel welcome to add your comments or suggestions, the more people we have contributing to this, the better result we will have. Thanks :) Orderinchaos 05:09, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Setting up disambiguation
[edit]I'm relatively new here, so I felt it might be good to ask before I make a change. My question is, what is the process to set up a disambiguation page for the two Melrose High School articles?
Essentially in looking through the List of schools in the Australian Capital Territory I noticed that Melrose High School was linking to a school in America. Having attending MHS I thought I might as well create an article for it, and I have: Melrose High School (Canberra)
Can I go in and just move the original page to Melrose High School (Melrose)? I'm just worried about etiquette, perhaps I might not get a favourable response to a change like that. Anybody have any advice? :) -- Daedalus 08:13, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Daedalus. Your proposal is in line with the policy for naming schools at Wikipedia:Naming conventions#School_names and the linked Wikipedia:Naming conventions (schools). Just out of courtesy you might post a message on the article's talk page and wait a few days to see if you get any response. A possible alternative would be to leave the original article where it is and add a top link to both articles, but I think your idea is better. Wikipedia:Disambiguation has instructions for creating a disambiguation page. Let me know if you'd like any help. Gimboid13 19:54, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for the information. I've made the required changes and everything appears to be fine :) -- Daedalus 07:42, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
- You're welcome. You seem to finding your way around very well. I noticed you still haven't received the standard Wikipedia welcome though, so I've posted it on your talk page. Hope some of it's useful. Gimboid13 09:52, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
- Should Melrose High School (Canberra) be added to this wikiproject? Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools ? --RobBrisbane 02:20, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
- Certainly it should be in the Canberra project. In my opinion the shcools project is just too big , but you could add it in, but don't expect any support from that project, there are just too many pages in it, and most of the interest would be local. GB 03:04, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Willing to contribute
[edit]Although I have been using Wikipedia for some time now, I am totally new to editing. I live in the Woden area, and saw that most of the suburb articles there are stubs, so I guess that would be as good a place as any to start? Dikko 22:44, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Dikko. It's a bit quiet here at the moment, but I'm sure any contributions you'd like to make would be much appreciated. Gimboid13 09:14, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Well I wonder if it would be worth having a template (or list?) for the major headings - history, geography, demographics, amenities, transport, etc. Also for politics presumably best to link to pages for each electorate? --Dikko 09:38, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hello Dikko, all those topics are worth including in a full article. I was told to follow the Yarralumla, Australian Capital Territory example, as that has made it to Featured article status at least once. In the geography part you can include any hills or creeks, and the general slope of the land. You could mention highest and lowest point. You could have pronounciation of the name in phonetics for the non english readers. You could mention famous people who live in the suburb. Some exotica could be IP number block registered in the suburb or famous companies or interesting businesses (if there are any!) GB 11:27, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Wikipedia Day Awards
[edit]Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:08, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

embassies?
[edit]Should we have separate articles for Canberra's embassies as with Ottawa? At least Embassy of the United States in Canberra should get its own article --Astrokey44 04:53, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- I think the Embassies and High Commissions deserve articles. Some might be difficult to make into more than just a stub, but others could have substanial sections on their history and desgin.WA Burdett 06:00, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'd say only if they are architecturally or historically notable, like Australia House in London. Otherwise, they can simply be covered in Yarralumla or the relevant foreign relations articles (such as United States-Australia relations).--cj | talk 12:13, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Fauna
[edit]I have started an article on Fauna of the Australian Capital Territory. I will add in a bit more about lizards and molluscs eventually as well as some categories. I would appreciate a bird expert to add into the bird section. Also I need to find out about worms - earth, flat and round that are found in the ACT. Are there any good pictures of ACT animals around? GB 11:15, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I hope everyone fared okay through last night's storm, and didn't suffer any property damage. The sight this morning is...I'm not sure I've seen anything quite like it. How did you all fare? (On a more project-related note, did anyone get any photos?) Rebecca 00:35, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Map
[edit]Heres a cool map from the National Library collection.. from the 1840s, and it shows 'Tageranong', 'Ginninderry', 'Camberry', 'Jerabombera', 'Yarrowlumla', 'Mt.Ainsley' and Pialigo! Interesting to note the name of Moore's property is Camberry with an 'M', rather than Canberry with 'N' as it says on the Canberra article.. so which one is right? --Astrokey44 11:23, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- Cool map indeed! I've always assumed that Kamberry/Camberry were more "accurate" than Canberry. However, that's only because Kamberry was the first instance I ever saw of the "y" ending (ca. 30y.a.) and I don't think I'd ever seen the "Canberry" rendition until now. That said, Googlefightsays that Canberry = 31,700; Kamberry = 9,880; and Camberry = 1,990. Wow. Even allowing for Canberry being a mispledding of Cranberry, there are 27,500 hits. Hmmm... 2006 census data
[edit]Census data from the ABS will be available in June this year. I will provide the link when the data becomes available. The data can be used as a source for unsourced tidbits in infoboxes. Until then, here's the link to some census 2001 data for use. –Sebi ~ 07:49, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
Suburb directions in infoboxes
[edit]I've noticed a few suburb infoboxes that seem to have directions mixed up where they have the surrounding suburbs (eg. Red Hill has Narrabunda to the west, and Garran to the east). I'll try to fix up any errors I notice. --RobBrisbane 09:49, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
Meeting perhaps?
[edit]Hi there Canberra members. Sterry2607 11:32, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- I'd be happy to meet up with people sometime, but I'm afraid I can't do this Saturday, as I'm still out of the territory. If it can wait another week or so, I'll certainly try and come. Rebecca 12:13, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your prompt response Rebecca. OK? Sterry2607 12:40, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Anything needed in/from/near/of Tuggeranong?
[edit]Can anyone point me at articles pertaining to Tuggeranong that need further work? I've got a bit of time down in this part of the world, and would like to contribute what I can. —Sam Wilson (Australia) 04:50, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- Nice to see another editor from Canberra around here! There's a whole lot of stuff in the Tuggeranong area that could do with some help. The Tuggeranong article itself isn't bad in terms of early history, but there's very little after suburban development actually began in the area, and the article doesn't have much other than history. The articles on individual suburbs could all do with some work, and photos of them would be fantastic if you happen to own a camera. Tuggeranong Town Centre is a pretty lousy stub, and could also do with a photo, and Centro Tuggeranong could do with some expansion. There's also the possibility of articles of articles on landmarks and such, but I'm not actually all that familiar with the area - in three years in Canberra, I've ventured down there all of once, so I can't really help with any more suggestions than that. Rebecca 05:23, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Hi Sam — if you look at the Yarralumla article you can see what kind of detail and quality is needed to get the article to a featured article status. If you could add in the missing information on the Tuggeranong suburb articles there would be some progress forward. You could aim to get each article up to B grade at least! Photo of Russian embassy required
[edit]I have reformatted Diplomatic missions of Russia and have included a column which is to be populated of the various Russian diplomatic missions, and the article needs a photo of the Russian Embassy which is located at 78 Canberra Avenue in Griffith. Can any Canberrians assist with this? Chers --Russavia 17:27, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- Done.--Grahamec 07:02, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
- it is difficult to get a good photograph of the Russian Embassy in Canberra - it is behind a phalanx of densely planted conifers, and I wouldn't want any eager contributors to dangle a camera through the fence. The trees were planted for a reason.

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme
[edit]As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.
- The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
- The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
- A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.
Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.
Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Canberra
[edit]Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.
We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.
A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.
We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Suggested new category Local History - Canberra and region
[edit]I notice there is a category called History of the ACT. I am happy to discuss Chrisfromcanberra (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added on 05:53, 17 February 2009 (UTC).
Canberra day trip (Request some photos)
[edit]I'll be in Canberra on Monday however my time will be limited to about 4 - 5 hours. If you can list some articles that need newer photos or don't have photos I'll rate them on importance. Bidgee (talk) 05:50, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
- I think we're pretty good for most landmarks if I remember correctly. The main thing left outstanding is photos for suburb articles - if you could grab some of those (local shops are the obvious one, considering as they're in nearly every Canberra suburb) that would be great. Coordinators' working group
[edit]Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.
All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:03, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Friday March 20 brunch meetup thingy
[edit]Hi Canberrans,
On March 20th Liam (user:wittylama and I will both be in Canberra, meeting with lots of interesting folk from interesting orgs. One of our meetings will be a brunch around 9am. We would really like to meet up with local editors who are interested in helping make a "wiki conf" in Canberra around November happen. (See <http://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/AusWikiConf_2009> for some background)
If you are not too interested in that but still want to meet up, that's cool too. :) Please email me so we can swap contact info and such for when a venue is set.
thanks! --pfctdayelise (talk) 13:05, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). An example of a customized report can be found here.
If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none
parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.
Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Wiki Conference in Canberra - help needed
[edit]As User:pfctdayelise mentions a few sections up, there are plans for a conference in Canberra probably around November/early December. However, there are only a couple of people involved in organising it right now, and we need some serious help. I am not exactly the most contactable person right now (laptop has been waiting for a new hard drive for over a month now), but if you are willing to help in any capacity (particularly Treasurer, because it's not a popular job in the first place and it needs someone highly competent to do it) please contact me via Special:Emailuser/ConMan. Canberra articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
[edit]Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Canberra articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
[edit]Hello there! Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
WikiProject X is live!
[edit]Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Photo of ANZAC Parade
[edit]There has been some disagreement lately about what photograph to use in the infobox for ANZAC Parade, Canberra.
I assert that File:Canberra - Parliament from the Australian War Memorial.jpg is not a realistic colour, and that File:Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg is a more accurate representation of the colour, but Bidgee apparently disagrees.
Disclosure: I took File:Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg (while visiting from Perth), so I admit to being biased about its merits.
Could some Canberra locals please give an opinion as which photograph is a more accurate representation of the colour. Mitch Ames (talk) 07:37, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
- Here's Google Street View from 2015. File:Canberra - Parliament from the Australian War Memorial.jpg is wildly over-saturated by comparison. Weedwhacker128 (talk) 20:11, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
- File:Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg has more realistic colour, but the other has better sunlight and more interesting sky. See commons:Category:Land axis from the Australian War Memorial for other images that support the colour. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:31, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
"the other has better sunlight and more interesting sky"
— which would be relevant if we were illustrating the weather in Canberra, but the photo is supposed to accurately represent the road (ie the subject of the article), not the sky. Mitch Ames (talk) 11:31, 28 April 2015 (UTC)- I agree that the orange in File:Canberra - Parliament from the Australian War Memorial.jpg is over-saturated. File:Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg also isn't great due to the gloomy weather - things are a bit more orange than that. Nick-D (talk) 11:38, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
- Any local Canberrans fancy taking a better-coloured photo, or tweaking the colour on either of the existing ones to make it more realistic? Mitch Ames (talk) 12:51, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

File:Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg exists and appears to be far closer to reality than the current photo. The "interesting sky" mentioned above in the current image is also wildly over saturated. I would suggest that Anzac Parade Canberra 2014-09-16.jpg be restored. WikiConfererence Australia 2015 - Save the date 3-5 October 2015
[edit]Our first Australian conference for Wikipedians/Wikimedians will be held 3-5 October 2015. Organised by Wikimedia Australia, there will be a 2-day conference (Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October) with an optional 3rd day (Monday 5 October) for specialist topics (unconference discussions, training sessions, etc). The venue is the State Library of Queensland in Brisbane. So put those dates in your diary! Note: Monday is a public holiday is some states but not others. Read about it here: WikiConference Australia 2015
As part of that page, there are now sections for you to:
- indicate your interest in possibly attending the conference (this is not a binding commitment, of course)
- add suggestions for topics to include in the conference: what you would like to hear/discuss (again, there is no commit to you presenting/organising that topic, although it’s great if you are willing to do so), or indicate your enthusiasm for any existing topic on the list by adding a note of support underneath it
It would really help our planning if you could let us know about possible attendance and the kind of topics that would make you want to come. If you don’t want to express your views on-wiki, please email me at kerry.raymond@wikimedia.org.au or committee@wikimedia.org.au
We are hoping to have travel subsidies available to assist active Australasian Wikipedians to attend the conference, although we are not currently in a position to provide details, but be assured we are doing everything we can to make it possible for active Australian Wikipedians to come to the conference. Kerry (talk) 00:18, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- Folks, just letting you know we will not be proceeding with Wikiconference Australia 2015 originally proposed for 3-5 October 2015. Thanks to those of you who expressed your support. You are free to watch the football finals instead :-) Kerry (talk) 08:27, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

New 5000 Challenge for Australia
[edit]Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge and the wider Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Australia and Oceania like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. Cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:14, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
Neglected, overlooked, but considered important
[edit]Greetings project page watchers - there is a current strategy survey that has slipped past - we have had opportunities in Melbourne and Sydney,....
The Wikimedia movement strategy core team and working groups have completed reviewing the more than 1800 thematic statements we received from the first discussion. They have identified 5 themes that were consistent across all the conversations - each with their own set of sub-themes. These are not the final themes, just an initial working draft of the core concepts.
You are invited to join the online and offline discussions taking place on these 5 themes. This round of discussions will take place between now and June 12th. You can discuss as many as you like; we ask you to participate in the ones that are most (or least) important to you.
Here are the five themes, each has a page on Meta-Wiki with more information about the theme and how to participate in that theme's discussion:
- Healthy, Inclusive Communities
- The Augmented Age
- A Truly Global Movement
- The Most Respected Source of Knowledge
- Engaging in the Knowledge Ecosystem
On the movement strategy portal on Meta-Wiki, you can find more information about each of these themes, their discussions, and how to participate.
You may have already responded somewhere - just in case you havent already - you are welcome to do so here, on the australian noticeboard, or if you have any questions you are welcome to contact strategy@wikimedia.org.au

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
[edit]The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
[edit]On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 10:54, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
[edit]Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
User script to detect unreliable sources
[edit]I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Hello, |
Project-independent quality assessments
[edit]Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 20:53, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
