I searched on they string "|work=The Australian" and got 8,000 results which apparently is the limit. There are probably thousands upon thousands more, and this doesn't include "| work=The Australian" or "|work=the Australian" or bare URLS, and of course it only gives the present state and not change over time. == Automatic taxobox system: Way to display all entries in a page's Template:Taxonomy hierarchy (preferably automatically)? ==
Just wanted to say, "HI!", because I'm new here. My name is Frank Fromsteld and yours?Thank you. ---Frank Fromsteld.
:Please go to [[Wikipedia:Introduction]]. BTW, welcome to Wikipedia. '''[[User:@pple|<font color="red">A</font>]][[User talk:@pple|''<font color= "green">W</font>'']]''' 04:42, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
::To announce that you are a new user of Wikipedia go to the [[Wikipedia:New user log|new user log]] instead. [[User:Tim Q. Wells|Tim Q. Wells]] 05:55, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

For pages that use the template {{t|automatic taxobox}} (and related ones such as {{t|speciesbox}}), the taxonomic hierarchy displayed in the "Scientific classification" sidebar does not come from the page itself; rather, it comes from a different template which is automatically included. For example, the page [[Mammal]] automatically gets that information from the template {{t|Taxonomy/Mammalia}}. However, it only displays a limited subset of the information from that template, mainly (but not necessarily entirely) of the "Kings Play Chess On Fine Gold Stools" type. So you'll notice that the "Mammal" page displays seven levels, whereas the "Taxonomy/Mammalia" template that it pulls them from knows about twenty-five levels.
== Exclude WP mirrors in Google search? ==

I get the reasoning -- it's like a "Greatest Hits" album -- but I like seeing the whole thing. I understand you can click on the editing icon next to "Scientific classification" to go to the associated taxonomy template, but I'm wondering if there's some way to have them displayed inline on the page instead of switching to a new page. Preferably I'd like this to be automatic, like a preference setting or maybe a user CSS setting. Does anyone know of such a thing? Thanks. - [[User:Rwv37|Rwv37]] ([[User talk:Rwv37|talk]]) 00:59, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
Is there a way to exclude Wikipedia mirrors from a Google search? The reason is that often I'm trying to look for an independant source, and if I do a Google search, it turns up a bunch of sites that just copy Wikipedia. I have been seeking to resolve the dispute through polite and constructive talk, but given the responses so far, it seems we may need some help. My question concerns which avenue for [[WP:dispute resolution|dispute resolution]] would seem most appropriate.
== Some stats that I can't find ==

The issue in brief: On December 6, without prior discussion, one editor, being bold, deleted from various parts of the article 16,703 bytes of text. On the same day, he was joined by another editor, who deleted 1,009 bytes more. The edits undid roughly a year’s worth of work by me and other editors. The deletions consisted largely of material from high-quality reliable sources.
I'm looking for stats that compare the contributions from anonymous contributors and registered users? Like numbers of contributions, or byte counts, or maybe numbers of contributions that are reverted... [[User_talk:Sanchom|Sancho]] 06:05, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
:Your should directly ask [[User talk:Interiot|Interiot]] for this kind of question. [[User:@pple|@pple]] 03:45, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
::Thanks, I should have known. [[User_talk:Sanchom|Sancho]] 20:49, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

To complicate matters: On the [[Talk:Ian Stevenson|Talk page]] and the [[WP:FTN|Fringe Theories Noticeboard]], the first editor went in for what might reasonably be seen as personal attacks.
== Search & Disambiguation ==

Given the overwhelming extent of the sudden edits, I suggested on the Talk page that we restore the article to its previous state and then use a process of “talking and editing” to go through proposed deletions. Several editors quickly responded that we should do the opposite: Leave all the deletions in place and then incrementally consider what I might wish to see restored.
The Search Engine sends visitors keyboarding in "William Shepherd" to one particular "William Shepherd" (the astronaut) listed on Wikipedia. Normally (?) where there are several articles (there are 4 for William Shepherd) a search sends queries to the Disambiguation Page first. From here the vistor chooses the particular entry they are looking for. How can this be changed for a "William Shepherd" search??

It appears to me that the editors responding are like-minded souls, at least some well known to one another—a “local consensus”—and that we would benefit from “outside” input.
: I believe that the [[WP:D|disambiguation guideline page]] has the information you seek, including instructions on how to create a Disambiguation Page. [[User:Echuck215|<span style="color:blue">Charlie</span>]]-[[User_talk:Echuck215|<small><span style="color:purple">talk to me</span></small>]]-[[Special:Contributions/Echuck215|<small><span style="color:purple">what I've done</span></small>]] 12:19, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

My question concerns how to proceed. Should I post an [[WP:RfC|RfC]]? Should I go to the [[WP:Dispute Resolution Noticeboard|Dispute Resolution Noticeboard]]”? Or what? I especially ask because although this essentially seems to me a content dispute, it also involves behaviors, such as [[WP:no personal attacks|personal attacks]] and [[WP:disruptive|disruptive editing]], that would seem to deserve review.
:Thanks for pointing to the Disambiguation page but after spending some time studying it I can't find the answer to my question which is how to get a search for 'William Shepherd' to go to the Disambiguation Page instead of to one of the four articles referenced on that page.

== Names of media ==
Hi. I own the site www.cclonline.org, and I noted when I was reading my site stats someone had posted links to our pages for "Gay-Friendly" Catholic parishes and colleges on Archbishop Favalora's profile. I edited these links yesterday to remove them. Archbishop Favalora does not have any official or unofficial link to our organization - the Conference for Catholic Lesbians. My belief is someone posted, and continues to post these links in order to embarrass the Archbishop and/or as part of a harassment campaign.

I'm working on the article about [[Jorge Lanata]], a journalist from Argentina. It is needed to mention several non-fiction media releases he has worked in: TV programs, newspapers, magazines, documentaries, etc; all with names in Spanish, and only some with articles to link. Which is the correct way to write them? Simple prose, as if the names are words like any other, as in Periodismo para todos? Quotation marks, as in "Periodismo para todos"? == Renumbering items in a table ==
The Sally page leads to a link mentioning anime and manga editors -- how do I contact them?

I have added two items (and expect I will have more to add) to the table in this entry [[List of New York State Historic Markers in Albany County, New York]]. They are the first #86 (Oriskatach) and the first #141 (Van der Zee Manor House). (Note: reviewing the table, I see Oriskatach actually claimed number 86, but now there are two number 87s.) However, because I copied and pasted an existing entry to work from, the row numbers were duplicated. I can go in and renumber all the items starting with the second #87, but I wonder if a template or other device was used that can now renumber the entries? I've looked through the archives and found [[Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2009 April 23|this]]<nowiki> and also looked into static row numbers, but am quite uncertain about how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated, so I can understand how to fix it now and avoid the same problem when I add new entries. Many thanks. ~~~</nowiki> [[User:TrudiJ|TrudiJ]] ([[User talk:TrudiJ|talk]]) 12:27, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
I'd rather talk to the writers/editors who did the Sally page than simply start inserting changes. Not that I'm afraid of changes, but it's better, I think, to get some discussion and consensus first. Since I have no experience at all editing on Wikipedia, I'd rather avoid all the inevitable blunders that come with inexperience. It's better, I think, to say to someone "How about this and that? Isn't that part a little inaccurate and saying it this way would be better?"
:{{ping|TrudiJ}} having read the linked helpdesk query, I think a manual update would be the simplest option. If you are making several changes you could add numbers like 86a, make a note on the talk page and then do a final manual renumbering.

Hi, I was asked to create a page for a person. I took a couple of days and didn't realize that another had been created in the meantime. A user ([[User:AMK1211|AMK1211]]) did not properly move the article [[Nicole Blonsky]] to [[Nikki Blonsky]], and as a result all of the history of the previous page was lost and the new talk page ([[Talk:Nikki Blonsky]]) was created as a redirect to the ''old'' talk page ([[Talk:Nicole Blonsky]]). I noticed this when I saw that the article, which I had previously assessed for the Biography WikiProject, was no longer technically assessed, so I used a script to assess it, which created the new talk page ([[Talk:Nikki Blonsky]]) before I figured out that the old talk page should have been moved. Now, of course, since the article talk page already exists, I can't move it myself. Can someone help me figure this mess out? :[[User:EternalPsyche|EternalPsyche]], I haven't bothered to read the page [[:ja:永田希]]; but I note that it does have references. Your translation does not. Us volunteers are busy: we answer specific questions and requests, but rarely if ever requests to turn (sorry, but) half-baked drafts into articles. So put in the references ''yourself'': links on this page ([[WP:HD]]) will take you -- not directly, but simply enough -- to pages where the mechanics of referencing are explained. You say he had a "unique approach to reading" without saying what this approach was. What was it? (And which authoritative source, independent of Nagata, writes that it was unique?) You say that "Nagata's passion for literature was deeply influenced by his fascination with noise and industrial music" but you don't say what the influence was. What was it? Don't make Japanese script oblique ("italic"); doing so is ugly. And -- but no, that's enough for now. Happy editing! -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 05:58, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
I have created a page for my Non Profit and I was looking to add an image to this page. I uploaded the image, but I cannot get this image to show on the page. The page is located here:
:-- Except that another quick look at [[:ja:永田希]], [[User:EternalPsyche|EternalPsyche]], makes it clear that a number of what are formatted like references aren't really references. (Common are the publication details of books mentioned in the body text.) Where are the [[WP:RS|reliable sources]] that discuss Nagata or his works in some depth? These are necessary, in order to show that he's [[WP:N|"notable", as defined by and for Wikipedia]]. Note that material produced by his publishers, and what he might have said in interviews, don't count. -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 06:12, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

== Multiple Interlanguage Wikilinks ==

I recently created the page [[Nissan R90C]]. It is about a basic race car that has seen multiple forms in its year of competition. These forms have had multiple names (R90CK, R90CP, R91CP, R92CP, etc...). My page covers all the variants because they are basically the same car.

However, the Japanese Wikipedia has pages for 4 specific variants: [[:ja:日産・R90CK]], [[:ja:日産・R90CP]], [[:ja:日産・R91CP]], and [[:ja:日産・R92CP]].

How exactly should I add an interlanguage wikilink to the bottom of the page? Should I add all four Japanese articles as four seperate interlanguage wikilinks? [[User:The359|The359]] 04:44, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
:Good question. The software is designed in such a way that having more than one interwiki link to the same language is confusing. You have two options here.
#Just pick on article on the Japanese Wikipedia to exchange links with. (Actually, all the Japanese wiki articles can link to enwiki, but not the reverse.) Then check to see that all the ja.wiki articles link to one another in a category or template, and that's good enough.
#Create sub-stubs for each variant of the car in order to facilitate one-to-one interwiki linking.
I prefer the first option because it's simpler. [[User:Shalom|Shalom]] [[User talk:Shalom|Hello]] 04:57, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

== movie plots and titles. ==

Can you help me locate a film that was shown on TV in 1982 about a "mentally retarded" (I hate that word) man and the woman who helped him and eventually married him? I missed the opening credits and title, and the closing credits were never shown.

The story is about a young man who marries a slightly older woman (NOT TIM) and his family refuses to accept the marriage. They take the couple to court to have the marriage annulled, and the judge orders him to 30days observation/evaluation and an institution. She helped him through the 30 days (and the worst test at the roller rink). At the end of the film, the judge gave the family the choice of accepting the marriage or placing him permanently in the institution. She was finally accepted. The most memorable line was, "I'm not retarded. I'm not retarded. A little slow. A few problems. No problem."

I would love to add this film to my collection, but I have no idea what it is or who was in it. I've been searching for over 20 years, and have only recently asked for help.
If you can help me, please let me know at [EMAIL REMOVED].

So before you spend many hours editing your new article, only to possibly have it deleted, you should carefully review [[WP:NOT|what Wikipedia is not]], and it's a good idea to ask the Help desk about the subject you have in mind. Also be aware that Wikipedia already has {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} articles, making it the largest encyclopedia in history, but less than 1% of these articles have earned [[WP:FA|Wikipedia's highest quality ranking of "featured"]]. Thus Wikipedia's greatest need (by far) is to [[WP:WIKIFY|improve the quality of existing articles]], rather than create even more new articles that are likely to be of low quality until they too receive extensive editing by many users who have [[RTFM|read the friendly manuals]]. --[[User:Teratornis|Teratornis]] 14:41, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Why was the article, "Zeitgeist: The Movie" and other similar names protected from creation? There used to be a decent article there. There was nothing much on the deletion log either. Since the article is about a movie with sensitive information about the religion and the 911 conspiracy, the deletion did not seem like a legit process, but rather, censorship.

== Section-edit links displaced by images ==

I ran across an article ([[South Park, Los Angeles, California]]) that had the section-edit links in an odd place. Looking at it, I saw that two images included in the top section (section 0) extended down the page past the headings of the next two sections. It appears that this made the section header wrap, leaving the section-edit links in the middle of the second section text. I made a change in the location of the images that improved this. But what should have happened to prevent this in the first place?

A tag has been placed on [[:page name]], requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the [[WP:CSD#Articles|criteria for speedy deletion]], because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read [[Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#G11|the general criteria for speedy deletion]], particularly item 11, as well as [[WP:SPAM|the guidelines on spam]].

And that A7 refers to:

A7 Article about a person, group, company, or web content that does not assert the importance of the subject.

I do not think that either was the case. Wouldn't A7 apply to everything on Wikipedia? How does one assert importance? As for G11, the article was about a doll that is also known as an artwork in some circles . . . not a company, product, or service. I am very confused.

== Question re: recreating speedily deleted articles, Stack Bundles ==

I've read the [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Stack Bundles]] discussion and understand that the article as it was must not have been acceptable. I wonder if there's not room for somebody to come in and do it properly. I have previously worked on the page of a homicide victim, [[Lieth Von Stein]], whose only notability ''was'' as the victim of homicide (though his case gained notoriety when it became the subject of two books and movies). Stack has plenty of press coverage. If anybody can shed any light on this for me--as in whether a page, speedily deleted, can be restarted and under what circumstances--I'd appreciate it. Even if it were open, I might not choose to create an article on Stack Bundles (I've only done cursory reading so far), but it seems like valuable general information. --[[User:Moonriddengirl|Moonriddengirl]] 14:22, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
:Hi Moonriddengirl. This is not a simple issue. First some terminology and structure to work from. The article was not speedily deleted. Speedy deletion is a specific process [[WP:CSD|you can read about here]] which involves defined and narrowly-tailored criteria for deletion ''without debate''. Articles that are speedy deleted are not subject to [[WP:CSD#G4|speedy deletion as reposts]] because no consensus was reached on the merits. [[WP:AFD|Articles for deletion]], by contrast, is debate on the merits of the article under various policies to reach a consensus. If an article is deleted after such non-speedy, debate on the merits, as this one was, ''reposts'' of the article are then subject to speedy deletion under the repost criterion I linked above, but only where the new article "is substantially identical to the deleted version and any revisions made clearly do not address the reasons for which the page was deleted." Okay, putting that aside.

:There are a few competing policies at play here. Our [[WP:N|notability policy]] requires citation to [[WP:RS|reliable sources]] which substantively treat the article's subject, and are independent of that subject. That is what we mean by notability here, not the dictionary definition. We also have subject specific notability guidelines which expand on the general criteria. Relevant ones for this topic are [[Wikipedia:Notability (music)]] and [[Wikipedia:Notability (people)]]. Simple notability concerns must be balanced here against two other policies [[WP:NOT#NEWS]] and [[WP:NOT#MEMORIAL]].

:Articles which are created after someone's death and often ''because of the notoriety surrounding the death'', may not work as an article. Where this comes up is that someone's death, especially as a result of foul play, ends in substantial newspaper coverage. Those are reliable sources, and at first seem to meet notability standards head on. It is a subject of ongoing debate whether flurry of newscoverage should be discounted; the subject is newsworthy, yes (and thus perfect material for our sister project, [[Wikinews]]), but does he or she suddenly become notable? The answer to that is only seen over the long term ([[WP:CRYSTAL|which we can't know now]]); if ten years from now the subject of a murder is still written about, ''then we know''. So, one way to think about it is: "could a proper article (i.e. an article meeting notability standards, citing to reliable sources, etc.) have been written about the subject before the newsworthy event? If so, then the subject is good material for an article, even if the impetus for creation postdates the newsworthy event. If, on the other hand. such an article could not have been written beforehand, it's probably not a good subject for an article afterwards if it is just newsworthiness that has been achieved posthumously.

:So ultimately, my advice to you is to write the article only if you can and are willing to hunt down and cite to reliable sources in your rewrite tending to show that that an article properly establishing notability could have been written about him before his death. Otherwise, I don't see how you can address the concerns that resulted in deletion after debate, and if you don't address those concerns, this is likely to simply be deleted as a repost. Hope this lengthy post is clear, not too pablum-filled and helpful.--[[User:Fuhghettaboutit|Fuhghettaboutit]] 15:49, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

I need to create a new page for 'State of the Heart'. There's already an existing page by the same name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Of_The_Heart

The source content for the new page can be seen here stateoftheheart.name

:When you go to create the new page, add a short descriptor after the main title to differentiate from the existing article. For example, [[State of the Heart (film)]]. How to find out if the number of articles quoting a source has decreased?

There is a great deal of antipathy towards the Murdoch press in Australia. Interested to see if there has been any systematic removal. Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 12:58, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There have been discussions about the reliability of these organizations on the Reliable sources noticeboard... you can look these up, but I believe that The Australian is listed as "generally reliable", and The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) as "generally unreliable". Regardless, these sources are still used in many articles. You can see this with the following search: Special:Search/insource:dailytelegraph.com.au Reconrabbit 15:34, 2 January 2025 (UTC)'[reply]
So, I found this neat tool which (says it) shows the occurrence of any string in the whole English Wikipedia. I searched on they string "|work=The Australian" and got 8,000 results which apparently is the limit. There are probably thousands upon thousands more, and this doesn't include "| work=The Australian" or "|work=the Australian" or bare URLS, and of course it only gives the present state and not change over time. So it's not any good for this. But it is cool. And you know there are at least 8,000 uses. Herostratus (talk) 02:01, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Automatic taxobox system: Way to display all entries in a page's Template:Taxonomy hierarchy (preferably automatically)?

For pages that use the template {{automatic taxobox}} (and related ones such as {{speciesbox}}), the taxonomic hierarchy displayed in the "Scientific classification" sidebar does not come from the page itself; rather, it comes from a different template which is automatically included. For example, the page Mammal automatically gets that information from the template {{Taxonomy/Mammalia}}.

Thanks. - Rwv37 (talk) 00:59, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Question about an article

What is the closest article that has a similar infobox to a country, but for the whole world? Interstellarity (talk) 01:29, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Interstellarity, do you perhaps mean "Among articles that have as their subject the entire world, which has/have an infobox that is closest to that used for an individual country?"? If not, please elucidate. -- Hoary (talk) 01:55, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary To be clear, yes, that is what I was talking about. Interstellarity (talk) 02:26, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, Interstellarity, I don't know. I did guess, however; and what I found surprised me. We have Coal mining and Coal-mining region, and exploring the latter we encounter Category:Coal mining regions by country and Category:Coal mining regions in the United States. As coalfields can of course cross borders, it makes sense that Coal mining in Wyoming, for example, is independent of "coal mining regions". Still, it's somewhat odd. None of the (few) coal-mining-related pages I looked at have infoboxes; but it's easy to imagine how a single infobox template could be used for regions; for provinces, etc; and for nations. -- Hoary (talk) 08:53, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Which place to go to for help in resolving a dispute

I find myself in a disagreement—a dispute, I’d have to say—with other editors of a biographical article on Ian Stevenson, an American psychiatrist who researched cases in which children claim to remember past lives.

I have been seeking to resolve the dispute through polite and constructive talk, but given the responses so far, it seems we may need some help. My question concerns which avenue for dispute resolution would seem most appropriate.

To complicate matters: On the Talk page and the Fringe Theories Noticeboard, the first editor went in for what might reasonably be seen as personal attacks.

It appears to me that the editors responding are like-minded souls, at least some well known to one another—a “local consensus”—and that we would benefit from “outside” input.

My question concerns how to proceed. Should I post an RfC? Should I go to the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard”? Or what? I especially ask because although this essentially seems to me a content dispute, it also involves behaviors, such as personal attacks and disruptive editing, that would seem to deserve review.

I have practically no experience with dispute resolution outside of discussion on Talk pages, so I would be grateful for advice.

    Thank you.

    Cordially, O Govinda (talk) 02:13, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If there has been extensive discussion on the article talk pages, and whatever content issue is not resolved by either editors involved (i.e. no consensus was able to be reached), than the DRN is the place to go. If behavior issues are in play, and such editor(s) fail to respond accordingly and with no regard for our policies and guidelines, than report it to admins. 2601AC47 (talk·contribs·my rights) Isn't a IP anon 02:20, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I took a good look at the talk, and I would suggest taking into consideration what Psychologist Guy has told you for the last year and a half as far as that is concerned, especially about fringe theories. If it's a simple dispute (at this rate unlikely) between you two, than try getting a 3rd opinion. 2601AC47 (talk·contribs·my rights) Isn't a IP anon 02:32, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
O Govinda has repeatedly attempted to rewrite the article about Stevenson to present him in a more favourable light spanning over half a decade, and been repeatedly opposed every time. Govinda should probably WP:DROPTHESTICK at this point. Hemiauchenia (talk) 04:01, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I note here that O Govinda was yesterday indefinitely blocked from both Ian Stevenson and its Talk page because of their disruptive editing; specifically, for pushing fringe views against consensus. This discussion can thus be closed. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 23:18, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Page incorrectly marked as extended-protected

I have the user preference set to see hidden categories on pages like Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Redirects, which is part of the Category:Wikipedia extended-confirmed-protected pages, despite not actually being protected. I was wondering how this could have happened, and whether a request over at WP:RFUP would do anything. Cheers. LR.127 (talk) 03:19, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Google Indexing Issue for Camdenmusique

Hi, I noticed that the "Camdenmusique" article is not appearing in Google search results. Could someone please help review it for potential indexing issues or explain why it might not be showing? Thank you! GD234 (talk) 05:25, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:Camdenmusique isn't an article; it's a draft. Google doesn't spider drafts. There's a template on the draft, inviting you to submit the draft for consideration as an article. -- Hoary (talk) 05:35, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It was an article, but I moved it to draft. See related discussion at AN. voorts (talk/contributions) 05:41, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Where do I ask questions if the wikiproject is practically inactive

Recently asked for help on wikiproject law enforcement, it's been a day already and nobody has responded(other than an update by me).

May I ask where to ask for help if the wikiproject is practically inactive?

If I have to, i might also ask for help on wikiproject china but doesn't seem like it is particularly active either.

(also if possible help out on fixing wikipedia articles on chinese law enforcement and the wikimedia commons category, the entire place is a huge mess) Thehistorianisaac (talk) 10:11, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My advise is to be patient, a day is a really short time to wait for response here in Wikipedia. You should be aware that Wikipedia editors are volunteers, and are not obligated to keep up with quotas or progress. For your requests, you basically need to wait for someone who is interested in these topics to help out. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 11:38, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, but I just want to know where to ask for help since wikiproject law enforcement is considered to be only semi-active Thehistorianisaac (talk) 11:43, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Thehistorianisaac. There isn't anybody. A WikiProject dies because nobody (or not enough) volunteer editors are willing to spend any time on it. The talk page, or talk pages of associated WikiProjects, are the most likely places to find people who are interested in reviving it, but there is no guarantee you will find anybody. It's a bit like asking "Where can I go for help to revive my local tennis club/book club/drama society that seems to have died?" ColinFine (talk) 14:10, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    That's sad
But good news it is still sort of semi-active, and sorting out wikimedia categories is stuff most people can do Thehistorianisaac (talk) 14:13, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that (semi)simple commons-category cleanups probably don't require project collaboration. For example, if there are two different cats, one for each of two different topics, but files are mis-placed, just change the cat. If one topic with a cat is a subtopic of another, likewise easy to put all the subtopic's files in a subcat rather than the parent-cat. There are some tools we have on commons that can help if there are lots of files to do at once. Let me know if you need help with that. DMacks (talk) 16:43, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for offering to help, so far the first problem i found is just simply people put the category for armed police(gendarme) in the category for people's police/public security bureaus(local civilian police) when it comes to categories for police inside a city; for this i will make another category for law enforcement in that city to split apart local civilian police and the armed police.
After this it's mostly just adding categories to other categories. Thehistorianisaac (talk) 03:33, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a good plan. A tag like {{About|what this one is about|what the other one is about instead|other cat name}} in each could help both readers and editors make sure they understand what is where. DMacks (talk) 07:51, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. Will start to work on it when i have time. Anyways, thanks to you'all for helping me out Thehistorianisaac (talk) 08:08, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Names of media

I'm working on the article about Jorge Lanata, a journalist from Argentina. Italics, as in Periodismo para todos? Cambalachero (talk) 15:38, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Please see MOS:TITLE. ColinFine (talk) 18:18, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think best way is to use italics for TV programs, magazines, and newspapers (e.g., Periodismo para todos) and "quotation marks" for articles or episodes.
Italics: For TV programs, documentaries, newspapers, and magazines (e.g., Periodismo para todos).
Quotation Marks: For articles, episodes, or smaller works (e.g., "El Robo del Siglo"). Ayohama (talk) 12:07, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Accidentally created new article

I was in the process of creating an article for one of Abraham Lincoln's descendants when I saw that there was an AfD discussion for deleting it some time ago. I already published the page anyways as I was planning on coming back to it to continue editing before I saw the discussion. Any help on deleting/un-publishing? Thanks. Qqars (talk) 17:16, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Qqars: I have marked the page for G7 speedy deletion for you. Next time, you can just add {{db-author}} to the top of any page you made that you want deleted. JJPMaster (she/they) 17:19, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thank you! I did see that but I wasn't sure if it would work since I didn't think this was in my own user space. Qqars (talk) 17:35, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Qqars. {{db-author}} isn't limited to user space, but it is limited to files with no significant contributions from anybody else. ColinFine (talk) 18:19, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Qqars: Another possibility for the case of wanting to continue working on it can be to move it to draft space; so "Foo" becomes "Draft:Foo". Feline Hymnic (talk) 10:50, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Is a map slideshow possible?

I have just uploaded three maps (each 4954 × 2868 pixels) of the Kaliningrad Oblast, one with placenames in Russian Cyrillic, one with them in Romanized Russian, and one showing the old prewar German names. I would like to be able to display these in one or two articles as a slideshow without sacrificing resolution or size so that a user can pore over the map as it were, full size, and see the names change every 15 seconds or so. I have tried .gif animation, but online apps always see fit to shrink the images and it does not work the way I'd like it to. Is there a way in which what I want can be done? Kelisi (talk) 03:59, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kelisi: As that's likely to fall foul of WP:ACCESSIBILITY, I wouldn't bother but, instead, display the three adjacently. If readers want to compare them in detail they can zoom or download the images. Bazza 7 (talk) 10:52, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Copyvio or acceptable?

The article 1990 Luzon earthquake has two paragraphs with CN tags that are copied from https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00001734.htm. Would this be allowed per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright#Can_I_add_something_to_Wikipedia_that_I_got_from_somewhere_else? or would it be copyvio? Wildfireupdateman :) (talk) 04:42, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Wildfireupdateman: Works produced by the U.S. federal government are in the public domain, so I don't think it'd be a violation. JJPMaster (she/they) 04:43, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's not copyrighted, so not copyvio. However, any paragraph-length direct copy must be attributed to avoid plagiarism. See WP:plagiarism. The attribution for a shorter direct copy is arguably handled by just citing the source, although that's a bit weak. It's more proper to use actual quotation marks and a cite. Plagiarisn: any copying without attribution. Copyvio: copying copyrighted material with or without attribution. -Arch dude (talk) 04:55, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Renumbering items in a table

I have added two items (and expect I will have more to add) to the table in this entry List of New York State Historic Markers in Albany County, New York. I've looked through the archives and found this and also looked into static row numbers, but am quite uncertain about how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated, so I can understand how to fix it now and avoid the same problem when I add new entries. Many thanks. ~~~ TrudiJ (talk) 12:27, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@TrudiJ: having read the linked helpdesk query, I think a manual update would be the simplest option. If you are making several changes you could add numbers like 86a, make a note on the talk page and then do a final manual renumbering.

Is a birth date required ...

... for all Wiki biographies? Although it seems to be required as per the MOS, I wasn't sure in situations when we might not find it out even after searching for third-party sources.

Incidentally, as I tried to figure out where else in Wikidom I might get help on this miniscule point, I came across something called "Editor Assistance," which was supposed to offer one-on-one assistance. What a disappointment to learn at the landing page that it was no longer available and the page was being kept merely for historical reference. I hope the Wiki tekkies are working on something using the power of AI to take its place. Augnablik (talk) 16:12, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    1. You are expected to do your best to find a date of birth; but if there is none, say so, including any comments you may find about the lack thereof in the record.
    2. Given AI's complete and utter unreliability, its tendency to hallucinate and fabricate, it's safe to say we will not allow the power of AI to mess us up. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:19, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

When previewing a change, how do I make corrections

I thought a while ago you could keep editing in the preview mode until you got it right, but now I don't see a way to do that. The only choices I have are to go ahead and publish as is without making needed corrections, or leave the page to abandon the edit and start over. I must be missing something! @Spalding: You have enabled "Use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor, instead of a different wikitext editor" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing. With this mode the top left of a preview page should have a left arrow < which goes back to the edit window and remembers your changes. You may have to also click X in a popup box before making other changes. Does this work? The arrow is on the same line as the publish link. Your browser interface may have a back arrow higher up. Seeking Editor for Translated Wikipedia Article on Nozomi Nagata in Tribute to His Passing

My friend, Nagata Nozomi, a Japanese author, has recently passed away. In honor of him, I have translated his Wikipedia page into English and would like to publish it. The translation is complete, but I need assistance with editing it to meet Wikipedia’s standards, properly citing sources, and ensuring it adheres to Wikipedia’s writing format. I don’t have previous experience with editing or the Wikipedia writing style, so I would deeply appreciate the help of a kind editor or a volunteer to make the necessary adjustments. Thank you very much. Any support would mean a lot.

EternalPsyche, I haven't bothered to read the page ja:永田希; but I note that it does have references. Your translation does not. Us volunteers are busy: we answer specific questions and requests, but rarely if ever requests to turn (sorry, but) half-baked drafts into articles. So put in the references yourself: links on this page (WP:HD) will take you -- not directly, but simply enough -- to pages where the mechanics of referencing are explained. -- Hoary (talk) 05:58, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
-- Except that another quick look at ja:永田希, EternalPsyche, makes it clear that a number of what are formatted like references aren't really references. (Common are the publication details of books mentioned in the body text.) Where are the reliable sources that discuss Nagata or his works in some depth? These are necessary, in order to show that he's "notable", as defined by and for Wikipedia. Note that material produced by his publishers, and what he might have said in interviews, don't count. -- Hoary (talk) 06:12, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
