== Is a map slideshow possible? ==
{{Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2007 December 14}}
I have just uploaded three maps (each 4954 × 2868 pixels) of the [[Kaliningrad Oblast]], one with placenames in Russian Cyrillic, one with them in Romanized Russian, and one showing the old prewar German names. I would like to be able to display these in one or two articles as a slideshow without sacrificing resolution or size so that a user can pore over the map as it were, full size, and see the names change every 15 seconds or so. I have tried .gif animation, but online apps always see fit to shrink the images and it does not work the way I'd like it to. Is there a way in which what I want can be done? [[User:Kelisi|Kelisi]] ([[User talk:Kelisi|talk]]) 03:59, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

:@[[User:Kelisi|Kelisi]]: As that's likely to fall foul of [[WP:ACCESSIBILITY]], I wouldn't bother but, instead, display the three adjacently. If readers want to compare them in detail they can zoom or download the images. [[User:Bazza_7|Bazza&nbsp;<span style="color:grey">7</span>]] ([[User_talk:Bazza_7|talk]]) 10:52, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

:It's not copyrighted, so not copyvio. However, any paragraph-length direct copy must be attributed to avoid [[plagiarism]]. See [[WP:plagiarism]]. The attribution for a shorter direct copy is arguably handled by just citing the source, although that's a bit weak. It's more proper to use actual quotation marks and a cite. Plagiarisn: any copying without attribution. Copyvio: copying copyrighted material with or without attribution. -[[User:Arch dude|Arch dude]] ([[User talk:Arch dude|talk]]) 04:55, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
== American English vs English ==

== Renumbering items in a table ==
I was wondering what the Wikipedia policy is for the use of English. I note that Civilisation is called 'Civilization' here. What is the justification for using the Americanism? <small>—Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[Special:Contributions/121.72.66.128|121.72.66.128]] ([[User talk:121.72.66.128|talk]]) 00:18, 15 December 2007 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

I have added two items (and expect I will have more to add) to the table in this entry [[List of New York State Historic Markers in Albany County, New York]]. They are the first #86 (Oriskatach) and the first #141 (Van der Zee Manor House). (Note: reviewing the table, I see Oriskatach actually claimed number 86, but now there are two number 87s.) However, because I copied and pasted an existing entry to work from, the row numbers were duplicated. I can go in and renumber all the items starting with the second #87, but I wonder if a template or other device was used that can now renumber the entries? I've looked through the archives and found [[Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2009 April 23|this]]<nowiki> and also looked into static row numbers, but am quite uncertain about how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated, so I can understand how to fix it now and avoid the same problem when I add new entries. Many thanks. ~~~</nowiki> [[User:TrudiJ|TrudiJ]] ([[User talk:TrudiJ|talk]]) 12:27, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

== Is a birth date required ... ==
I cannot log in. I get a message, "Your browser is not set to allow cookies, please set browser to allow cookies and try again." But my browser (Safari) was and is set to allow cookies and there were many on there before I cleared them to ensure room for new ones. So, I have my name and password, and my browser is set to allow cookies in the preferences, but I still cannot login. What else can I do?

... for all Wiki biographies? Although it seems to be required as per the MOS, I wasn't sure in situations when we might not find it out even after searching for third-party sources.
Regards,

Incidentally, as I tried to figure out where else in Wikidom I might get help on this miniscule point, I came across something called "Editor Assistance," which was supposed to offer one-on-one assistance. What a disappointment to learn at the landing page that it was no longer available and the page was being kept merely for historical reference. I hope the Wiki tekkies are working on something using the power of AI to take its place. [[User:Augnablik|Augnablik]] ([[User talk:Augnablik|talk]]) 16:12, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

I thought doing a insource search for <nowiki>/REDIRECT\[\[Alpha /</nowiki> would enable me to find all pages which redirect to a wikipedia page starting with Alpha, but that doesn't work. Is the issue tied in with [[Phab:T204089]]? If so, is there a good way to do this? (Ideally, I'd like to search for those pages which redirect to any page starting with an english spelling of a greek letter followed by a space[[User:Naraht|Naraht]] ([[User talk:Naraht|talk]]) 18:05, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

:{{Re|Naraht}} As usual, the AWB database scanner can do searches that other tools can't. I tried the search you asked for, but the full list of results was going to be huge. I can compile and post the full list if you'd like it. I have personally hiked to the top of Quail Mountain 75 times. I am not a nut or anything! I found the Quail Mountain wikipedia page today, and found some inaccuracies, the elevation is wrong, and there is no trail to the summit for example. I also added some information I have obtained from firsthand experience, and even uploaded a photo I took while hiking to the top on August 10, 2005 (NOT an easy feat in the summertime). Anyhow, my editing has not shown up, and I don't know where the photo went. I live about 10 miles from the peak and can even see it from my back yard. I am not vandalizing Wikipedia, only trying to make an honest contribution. Thanks! :Hey there! We're glad to have you here. However, to help cut down on some of the vandalism, we have some [[wp:bots|bots]] that revert changes that they think are suspicious. They are obviously wrong sometimes! Before you change things permanently, though, you'll want to use the preview button to make sure that's what you want. For example, your last edit still had default images for the gallery, which is probably why the bot reverted it. I went ahead and put that picture you uploaded in there, but it's up to you to finish it. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me! :{{ping|Spalding}} You have enabled "Use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor, instead of a different wikitext editor" at [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing]]. == Seeking Editor for Translated Wikipedia Article on Nozomi Nagata in Tribute to His Passing ==
'''EDITOR: PLEASE READ THIS INFO RE MAJOR MIDWESTERN AIRPORT DEVELOPMENTS AT ST. LOUIS'''
Greetings:
I recently added several major developments to the Wikipedia page that contains information about MidAmerica St. Louis Airport (BLV). The airport copy appears in Wikipedia under information about Scott Air Force Base (USAF).
The entire reference to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport needs to be updated. The most recent entry being seven years old.
The additions I wrote were severely restricted by space, which is OK, but doesn't allow for fullness of story, as it does here. The first sourced story appeared in the ''St. Louis (MO) Post-Dispatch'''''Bold text'''. It dealt with the first international air cargo shipment to the airport (which ha been a major goal for the past three years to position MidAmerica as the prime Midwestern location for air cargo. It also is being positioned as an economical alternative to Chicago (ORD) and Miami(MIA)for international air cargo heading to Midwest companies and retail/distribution centers.
The second sourced story appeared in the local Illinois daily ''Belleville News-Democrat.'''''Bold text''' It was about MidAmerica officials signing an international Memorandum of Understanding with officials from Batam, Indonesia (located near Singapore), and an exchange of visits by dignataries between the two entities Batam and St. Clair County, IL). There wasn't room to source the next three, which were federal government agencies designating the airport part of Foreign Trade Zone 31, designation of the airport as a U.S. Port of Entry for international cargo, and the opening of a U.S. Customs Office on the airport for incoming international air cargo.

My friend, Nagata Nozomi, a Japanese author, has recently passed away. In honor of him, I have translated his Wikipedia page into English and would like to publish it. The translation is complete, but I need assistance with editing it to meet Wikipedia’s standards, properly citing sources, and ensuring it adheres to Wikipedia’s writing format. I don’t have previous experience with editing or the Wikipedia writing style, so I would deeply appreciate the help of a kind editor or a volunteer to make the necessary adjustments.
I am James M. Grandone. I handle media relations for MidAmerica St. Louis Airport and would refer you to the director of the airport, Mr. Tim Cantwell for verification of the facts of the stories, as well as independent verification of the federal designations and facilities.
Thank you very much. Any support would mean a lot.

:[[User:EternalPsyche|EternalPsyche]], I haven't bothered to read the page [[:ja:永田希]]; but I note that it does have references. Your translation does not. Us volunteers are busy: we answer specific questions and requests, but rarely if ever requests to turn (sorry, but) half-baked drafts into articles. So put in the references ''yourself'': links on this page ([[WP:HD]]) will take you -- not directly, but simply enough -- to pages where the mechanics of referencing are explained. You say he had a "unique approach to reading" without saying what this approach was. What was it? (And which authoritative source, independent of Nagata, writes that it was unique?) You say that "Nagata's passion for literature was deeply influenced by his fascination with noise and industrial music" but you don't say what the influence was. What was it? Don't make Japanese script oblique ("italic"); doing so is ugly. And -- but no, that's enough for now. Happy editing! -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 05:58, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
:There are no paid editors here at Wikipedia. You and everyone else are able to make changes to Wikipedia articles. However, since you have a close relationship with the airport, please be aware of our policies on possible [[WP:COI|conflicts of interest]] and the need to have [[WP:RS|reliable sources]] to assert the subject's [[WP:NOTE|notability]], and please take note of Wikipedia policy regarding keeping a [[WP:POV|neutral point of view] and avoiding [[WP:CORP|company advertising]].
:-- Except that another quick look at [[:ja:永田希]], [[User:EternalPsyche|EternalPsyche]], makes it clear that a number of what are formatted like references aren't really references. (Common are the publication details of books mentioned in the body text.) Where are the [[WP:RS|reliable sources]] that discuss Nagata or his works in some depth? These are necessary, in order to show that he's [[WP:N|"notable", as defined by and for Wikipedia]]. Note that material produced by his publishers, and what he might have said in interviews, don't count. -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 06:12, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

::*{{ping|EternalPsyche}} I had a look at the article as well. It is a slightly [[WP:Promo]]ish, using flowery and promotional language which is unsuitable for a mainspace biographical article. I put a couple of tags in that were needed. The JP references mainly constitutes interviews per Hoary's comments above. There is an obituary which is a start, but I think as he's an author, I would look for book reviews so he could pass [[WP:NAUTHOR]]. If you can find a couple of reviews for each of the books, 2 or 3 covered with a couple of reviews each would be ideal, then he will pass WP:NAUTHOR. However, the article itself needs substantial work. It reads a blog entry, is promo, so currently unsuitable for Wikipedia. You would need to send it to draft once you got the reviews. Hope that helps. For some topics, a neutral point of view may be hard to report because some sides will accuse you of being an extremist. A neutral point of view should be as accurate as possible. If some argues that the world is flat, you don't want to write that the world may or may not be flat. You might say that -- (assuming it is an accepted source) belives that the world is flat but most experts do not accept this view. It can be complicated. == Revision history ==
Hi, I was just wondering whether it would help more to make changes in small chunks (e.g., fix grammar, then add sources, then add material) for better oversight or to do it all at once.

Sorry if this issue has already been covered in the documentation, I was a little overwhelmed by it. Thanks!
[[User:Wikimancer|Wikimancer]] ([[User talk:Wikimancer|talk]]) 07:01, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

:Wikipedia tries to encourage editors to [[WP:BB|be bold]] with their edits. However, it is often the case that only small changes to a page are necessary.
:There is an additional problem when creating a new article. An incomplete article, with extremely poor grammar, using an existing internet site as a working template, or missing references for example, is often reason enough to have your hard work speedily deleted (sometimes within minutes). The best advice I've heard to prevent this, is to develop your new article in a sub-page of your user page, until you are confident enough that it will meet Wikipedia's stringent criteria for an article ([[WP:RS|reliable sources]] establishing the subject's [[WP:NOTE|notability]], keeping an encyclopedic tone and maintaining a [[WP:NPOV|neutral point of view]], etc.)

== 3RR Question ==

I have been trying to make a constructive, knowledgeable, concisely-worded, well-referenced and relevant contribution to the Wiki article on clairvoyance, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clairvoyance, to give it more balance. "ScienceApologist" has repeatedly censored my contribution by reverting it 4 times in 3 days, but not more than 3 times in 24 hours. Can his actions still be considered a 3RR violation? Or do I have to try 3 more times within a 24-hour period (which seems a bit childish)? This is not a content dispute. We are not there yet. This is only a question of whether one editor can censor the good faith contribution of another editor by reverting it. I don't think so. <small>—Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[User:RAmesbury|RAmesbury]] ([[User talk:RAmesbury|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/RAmesbury|contribs]]) 14:15, 15 December 2007 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->
:Oh, it is indeed a content dispute. What you are trying to add to the article is not [[WP:NPOV|neutral point of view]], is [[WP:RS|unreliably sourced]] and gives [[WP:WEIGHT|undue weight]] to credulous, [[WP:FRINGE|fringe]] theories. Your edits were not censored, they were properly removed. You're right that no one has technically violated 3RR. However, please note that [[WP:3RR]] does not apply just to reverts. Quoting from that policy: "A revert, in this context, means undoing, in whole or in part, the actions of another editor or of other editors. This can include undoing edits to a page, deleting content or '''restoring deleted content'''" (emphasis added). Accordingly, you are subject to that policy just as much as your [correct] detractors.--[[User:Fuhghettaboutit|Fuhghettaboutit]] ([[User talk:Fuhghettaboutit|talk]]) 15:24, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

== Image question ==

I'm interested in using [http://www.indymedia.ie/cache/imagecache/local/attachments/oct2006/460_0___30_0_0_0_0_0_graf.jpg this image] to illustrate the ubiquitous nature of [[Emma Goldman]]'s influence. It's from the [http://www.indymedia.ie/article/78482 Irish Indymedia site]. The small print at the page's bottom reads: "© 2001-2007 Independent Media Centre Ireland. Unless otherwise stated by the author, all content is free for non-commercial reuse, reprint, and rebroadcast, on the net and elsewhere." Does this mean I have to use a Fair Use tag, with rationale? Or is there another option? ::I will take a similarly bold stand for indecisiveness. Descriptive HTML comments may help document Wikipedia's internal workings for new editors, but such comments would be better if they could (somehow) link to the help pages that explain what's going on. Someone who has not read [[Help:Category]] isn't going to get much help from a comment that simply says "Categorization". Similarly, the descriptive string "Other languages" doesn't help as much as would a link to [[Help:Interlanguage links]]. However, there's no way I know of to make links to help pages from inside HTML comments that would actually be functional (without also appearing on the rendered page, in violation of [[WP:SELFREF]]). Of course, even a link that requires copying and pasting into the Search field is better than nothing, so if you're going to add such comments, how about:
::*<code><nowiki> <!-- Categorization; see: Help:Category --></nowiki></code>
::*<code><nowiki> <!-- Other languages; see: Help:Interlanguage links --></nowiki></code>
::Then a new editor can get to the relevant help pages with a copy and paste; that's a bit more work than one click, but it's better than leaving people in the dark. It's too bad we don't have an [[Integrated development environment]] for Wikipedia; then the editor could provide context-sensitive links to the help pages that tell what every chunk of code means. Instead, most Wikipedia editors do their editing in just about the most bare-bones editor in common use, the edit window of a [[Web browser]]. To its credit, Wikipedia has about the best and most [[WP:EIW|comprehensive online documentation]] I have ever seen in any software system in my 20+ years of computing, but the burden is on the user to figure out how to look stuff up. ::Usually when the Help desk gets a question like this, it means the questioner is trying to edit the [[WP:LEAD|lead section]] of an article, which for some reason I have never understood does not have a section edit link like all the other sections. Whatever the reasoning may have been for that inconsistency, the result is a lot of confused users. Also, the lead section probably gets read a lot more than the rest of the article (if [[Jakob Nielsen (usability consultant)|Jakob Nielsen]]'s findings for other Web pages apply to Wikipedia), and thus it would certainly stimulate its share of editing impulses. The top of every page does have an edit tab, but a sizable fraction of new users just don't see it - perhaps partly because the section-edit links are so much more obvious. --[[User:Teratornis|Teratornis]] ([[User talk:Teratornis|talk]]) 01:56, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

== Playboy Special Editions page ==

while looking through your site on random topics i came across a magazine that i subscribed to for almost 3 years. i have finally found an error in your site :) im kinda proud since dang near everything you guys post is correct. the playboy special editions - specifically the PBOL (playboy book of lingerie) - is not issued 2x a month...its published 1 time every 2 months jan/feb, mar/apr, may/june, july/aug, sept/oct, and nov/dec. 6 issues a year in total ..not 24 as you have indicated. hope you can correct soon so that your reputation for extremely crediatable info remains in tact.

Playboy Special Editions (formerly known as flats, then Newsstand Specials[1]) are a spinoff series of Playboy magazine devoted entirely to softcore nude photographs of the Playboy models that are found sporadically scattered in the monthly Playboy magazine.

Unlike the monthly magazine, which features a variety of articles, opinion columns, and works of fiction, the only texts found in the Special Editions are captions of the photographs and readers' letters. Any professional Wikipedians out there, please help out this beginner. I am unsure of what type of retro format, specifically, the WTIC FM [http://www.965tic.com/pages/118282.php "Wayback Weekend"] is so I just labeled it as "80s". You will need to visit the webpage and read the article than use your own judgment as to what variation of the retro format the [[WTIC-FM]] [http://www.965tic.com/pages/118282.php "Wayback Weekend"] should be labeled as. Also, a little room should be set aside in the article itself to describe the [http://www.965tic.com/pages/118282.php "Wayback Weekend"] program. It has become a major attribute that listeners have started identifying the radio station. It makes it distinctly stand out from other [[CBS Radio]] stations. If the [[WTIC-FM]] website does not load properly through Firefox or Netscape, it is sure to work on Internet Explorer. Thank you for taking the time to read this unsigned comment.

What exactly is the policy for using images from a CITY website for an article on a city department, specifically a police department?

I remembered seeing something specifically on Federal govt sources but didn't notice anything in the fair use page that talked about this area. <small>—Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[Special:Contributions/172.137.64.173|172.137.64.173]] ([[User talk:172.137.64.173|talk]]) 05:06, 16 December 2007 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

:Wikipedia’s policy is the same for all images, but the copyright status of images on US Federal government sites is generally different from most other sites. Almost everything on Federal government sites is in the public domain; almost everything on other sites is copyrighted. == Inflation in the USA, what are the real numbers? ==

If we believe our Government then we only eperienced a rather benign inflation rate of 2.67% per year, on average,during the years between 2001 and 2007, or a total of 14.2%. This then makes the US dollar worth about 87 cents as of 1-1-2007. Yet looking at the actual out-of-pocked expenses, this might not be the actual story. My investigation revealed, that the true rate of inflation seemed to be related to the rate of increase in the US public debt which increased from $ 5.8 trillion in 2001 to $ 8.5 trillion at the end of 2006. This is an increase of 46.5%.At the same time, the Euro inceased by 30% in value, the S&P stock index by 30% and the commodity index by 40.5%. Based on these indicators we seemed to have had a real inflation of about 6.6% per year , or 37.7% over the five year period. This is about 1.3% less than the 7.9% average increase in the US public debt. The difference of 1.3% could be due to the average 1.3% increase per year in the US population. It can be argued the this population increase contributes a like amount to GDP, therefore cancels some of the US debt.

== Odd situation ==

[[Evasive Action]] describes something other than what I would have expected. However, the common meaning of the phrase would be just a dictdef, and therefore not worth an article, and there don't appear to be any other meanings, so a dab page is not in order either. Yet nearly every Wikipedia Ghit I've checked refers to the more usual meaning. Any ideas? [[User:Clarityfiend|Clarityfiend]] ([[User talk:Clarityfiend|talk]]) 16:55, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
:A dab page only needs two meanings. Though most have four or more, that is not a requirement AFAIK. Dicdefs can also be located on dab pages; see [[Mantle]] for an example. So, for example, you could move [[Evasive Action]] to [[Evasive Action (webcomic)]] and turn the resulting redirect into a dab page that reads like so:
<code>
:'''Evasive Action''' has several meanings.
:*An evasive action is...(dicdef)
:*[[Evasive Action (webcomic)|Evasive Action]] is a webcomic.

== Editing on a Disney character page ==

I'm afraid I found myself caught up in an "edit war" regarding an entry for a Disney
character. I apologize for that and I'm trying to stay out of the "combat zone", even
though another person is adding edits that not only do not have factual basis but seem
to be expressing a personal bias. I had removed the comments he made but replaced them,
since I don't intend to keep that page a battleground any longer (unfortunately, my own
signature probably shows on it now). However, I've written to this person and very
politely requested that he remember the Wikipedia etiquette rules and keep his edits
neutral. I'm hoping he'll pay attention and do this; but if not, I'm wondering if that
page can be "locked"? This is a character I like very much and I'm frankly offended
at the speculations the editor is writing. Were the comments based on fact, there would
be no problem. This is not a case of a mere disagreement; it's a matter of personal bias
being presented as fact.[[User:EthelG|EthelG]] ([[User talk:EthelG|talk]]) 22:45, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Also - when I wrote the title, I forgot to leave a space between the two words "Stone" and "Cottage" yet there is no edit button for the title. How can I add a space in between? ==Further request on company article==

Hello all. I am making a further request stemming from my initial request for help on the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2007_November_27#A_page_about_my_company:_wanting_to_do_it_by_the_rules | Help Desk]] of November 27 2007. In this request, I was seeking help in creating / publishing an NPOV article about the company I work for. It is a global engineering firm that has designed some very significant projects (eg. Wembley, Olympic Stadiums, Eden project). The firm has already been linked to several times in other Wiki articles (not by me). I was up-front about disclosing my COI and wanted to engage assistance in making sure I was not breaking any rules. I created a dummy article, it has now been moved to a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Mathardy/Sinclair_Knight_Merz | sub-page]] off my talk page. The general consensus of that Help Desk discussion was that the article was OK in terms of NPOV but needed some citation. That I have now done. There was also suggestion that I try and enlist help off the WikiProject Engineering page. I posted there on 28 November but have had no response.

Can anybody else help? I would be really happy for someone to publish the dummy article to save me breaking the COI rules. I have always been honest about my COI and would certainly be happy to make that disclaimer on the article if/when it is created. And yes, I understand that others will edit the article. (The reason I am being so meticulous about this is that I am a regular private user of Wikipedia and I don't want to resort to sock-puppets to get the article posted.) --[[User:Mathardy|Mat Hardy (Affentitten)]] ([[User talk:Mathardy|talk]]) 01:13, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

== Writing articles about your company/competitors ==

Hello

I submitted a question last month about a speedy deletion that was made on the article I created about the company I work for. It was suggested that a read an article about "writing an article about yourself/your company". I can't find this article and was hoping someone could send me the URL for this please.

Also, I am still confused as to why my article was deleted when one of our main competitors has a very similar article on the site.

Look forward to hearing your feedback.

== inappropriate content ==

I have searched the editing pages and found no way to send a suggestion about inappropriate content. Maybe you can forward this for consideration. I was looking at the Sarasota High School page and there is a comment near the bottom of the first screen about another HS (apparently) "whipping their asses". This is rather childish and I don't feel it is appropriate in a Wikipedia article (whether it be factual or not). It belongs in blogs and chat rooms, perhaps, because the folks there are often off the wall but not a reference site. I don't expect any feedback.

== My Instructor used Wikipedia ==

I just remembered, about two months ago my instructor used Wikipedia as a source. The notes provided the link to the Wikipedia page, and a complete copy / paste of the page's contents. Is there something wrong with this, especially when it's very common for teachers to get angry at their students and fail them for using Wikipedia as a source? I don't believe an instructor should be teaching students information that has the potential to be false. No I wont provide a name, or where I go to, I just want to know if he technically has the RIGHT to do this. Thanks. [[User:Newspaper98|Newspaper98]] ([[User talk:Newspaper98|talk]]) 13:23, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
:The relevant thing to read here is [[WP:REUSE]]. That said, it's almost always a better idea to use the sources of a wikipedia article, than the article itself, as wikipedia has the potential to be false (even if it is quite often right). I have no further opinion of how teachers use Wikipedia as study materials. It would all depend on how they use it. [[User:Martijn Hoekstra|Martijn Hoekstra]] ([[User talk:Martijn Hoekstra|talk]]) 13:40, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

:: Also, when citing Wikipedia, don't just include the article name, also include the revision number. This makes sure that it doesn't change since you're referring to a single revision of the article. Anyway, Wikipedia can still be a good source for casual use if used properly. :::As per the two replies above using Wikipedia can promote [[critical thinking]]. For example if the facts presented in the article are accompanied by in text citations from reliable sources then the student checks the article facts versus the citation facts ''and if'' they agree ''and if'' the students are satisfied the source is reliable they can include it in their paper. It takes active involvement on the students' part but this is what [[research]] and critical thinking are all about. [[User:Tasoskessaris|Dr.K.]] ([[User talk:Tasoskessaris|talk]]) 14:50, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
::::Wikipedia also promotes [[critical thinking]] by having an excellent set of articles on the topic. If every student could emerge from school with the ability to recognize all the standard [[fallacy|fallacies]] that pollute routine human discourse, we might end up with an intellectually competent populace for the first time in history. Teaching students ''how to think'' is much more important than merely imparting some specific set of facts to them from the typical school subjects. --[[User:Teratornis|Teratornis]] ([[User talk:Teratornis|talk]]) 21:02, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

::: Considering that most of the world's children currently receive some sort of ''religious'' education, which teaches children to prefer faith rather than evidence, I'd have to consider Wikipedia an improvement. Just my opinion. At least on Wikipedia children can learn something about religious diversity, instead of being taught the usual lesson that one arbitrary religion (usually the one believed by the child's parents) holds absolute truth, and all the others are wrong. In any case, I suggest that the ''real'' value of Wikipedia for young people is not so much in the content of the articles, although that value is substantial, but in the procedural knowledge of how the world's largest remote collaborative volunteer project manages to organize itself. I elaborated on this in [[User:Teratornis/Tips for teachers]]. I.e., the most important thing for children to learn from Wikipedia is ''how to build a [[wiki]]'', because that is how many of them are going to work as adults. Schools that provide state-of-the-art education will, of course, run their own wikis, where educators can verify the quality of instructional content, and students can learn to collaborate on their own pages. --[[User:Teratornis|Teratornis]] ([[User talk:Teratornis|talk]]) 21:16, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

== Question About Speedy Deletion Of Submission ==

To Whom It May Concern,

I submitted my first article to Wikipedia about an organization, Travel Sentry, that works with the [[Transportation Security Administration]] (TSA) in creating and deploying a system of TSA-accepted locks and locking devices for travelers. These special locks and locking devices are manufactured, distributed, and sold by third parties. In other words, Travel Sentry does not manufacture or sell any products or services. I wrote a submission about Travel Sentry, its background and history,etc. As a model for the submission, I used the [[McKinsey]] & Company entry found on Wikipedia.

My submission was speedily deleted with the following message:

20:53, 16 December 2007 Deb (Talk | contribs) deleted "Travel Sentry" ‎ (CSD G11: Blatant advertising: content was: '{{Infobox_Company | company_name = TRAVEL SENTRY® | company_type = Incorporated | company_logo = Image:TravelSentrystackedlogo.gif | founda...' (and the only)

I understand from reading the deletion policy that one of the deletion criteria is a Wikipedia cannot be about a specific company. My question, therefore, is why is McKinsey listed on Wikipedia? Should not they and others be deleted?

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards

If it is for your userpage, you can use this code;<nowiki><div style="size:290px; font-family:INSERT TEXT FONT HERE; text-align: justify; padding: .0em 1em .0em; font-size: 11px; color:#FFFFFF">TEXT!</div></nowiki>. Here is a [[list of colours]] you can use in place of 333 and as for the size, change that as per what you want. :::I did mean that I want change fontstyle wich is used in article text so that change show's only for me, not for other users. You need to create an account, then you can place any css code in [[Special:Mypage/monobook.css]]. For example, mine contains:
<source lang=css>
#bodyContent, #article {
font: medium serif;
}
</source>

== indonesian music ==

Dear Sirs,

I am trying to get my page listed for years with you guys, everytime they say
to me its not possible, due commercial pages. I think this is not fair,
we only want to get listed with our url at the subject " Indonesian music "
page, as an external link.

So my question is why is there an external link to Smisonain music, who also
is commercial and sells Indonesian music. We are proudly in bussniss for more then 10 years, carry all kind of rare music, and have many happy customer.

If Smisonian is listed and we are not allowed to get listed as external link only, this is a strange politic, maybe a big recording label has more
advantances with you then a poor hard working small specialiced music shop, who has also a lot of information.

I kindly ask you to consider this and list us also at the Indonesian music page

Regards,
IndonesianMusic.com

I edited the National Library of Medicine entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_National_Library_of_Medicine) so that it included a link to the ToxMystery entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxmystery). When I checked my edit I noticed that the link goes to an error page. :The edit was [http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=McKee_Foods&diff=prev&oldid=178389817]. Maybe it wasn't intentional vandalism, but it was inappropriate. You should only add what [[WP:RS|reliable sources]] have said, and not your own beliefs. And this case became worse because you, probably by accident, added the text inside a reference. This made the text "No one can stand up to the taste of a Little Debbie" appear next to a link in the reference section [http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=McKee_Foods&oldid=178389817#_note-0], giving the false impression that it's something the reference said. Hello, I am debating whether should I change the name for the former [[Kandara Airport]] into Jeddah Airport, or keep it the same. The term “Kandara Airport” was probably coined by the former airport’s location to the area, and that people didn’t want to confuse it with the newer [[King Abdulaziz International Airport]] (nicknamed Jeddah Airport). And also, before 1981 when the new one was built, the former one was officially named Jeddah Airport according to historical documents and videos. If I changed it, it would have been more historically accurate. Any thoughts? [[User:Bollardant|Bollardant]] ([[User talk:Bollardant|talk]]) 14:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

I have many many questions about "how do i use Wikipedia, how do i edit better my contributions on Wikipedia" and many others, regarding the fact that i'm a begginer and it's a little bit complicate for me to make contributions. My biggest problem it's that someone make fun of me and delete my contributions which are very notable. I gave links about the subject of my contributions and i assure you that my contributions have very serious subjects and interesting. I don't know how to use very well Wikipedia and what should i do for not let others make fun of me and delete my contributions, but i suppose that if i let you know about that maybe you'll help me.

:It looks like you're talking about the nomination of [[Kord (band)]] for deletion. First, the [[WP:AFD|AfD]] process is a discussion about the merits of the article, not a guarantee that it will be deleted. Second, when people on Wikipedia discuss "notability", they are talking about the notability guidelines, most generally those at [[WP:N]], but in this case the ones for bands at [[WP:BAND]] - in particular, articles need to be [[WP:V|verifiable]] by references to independent [[WP:RS|reliable sources]], e.g. a newspaper review of the band's album.
:And please note that people aren't making fun of you, or at least they shouldn't be - on Wikipedia we're all meant to be [[WP:CIV|civil]] and [[WP:AGF|assume good faith]]. The problem is that with so many people creating articles about themselves, their friends, their garage band with no albums or gigs, their corner shop, and so forth, there need to be procedures to sort the trash from the treasure. == Biological Engineering and Bioengineering ==

Is there a template of some kind I could add to their user talk? Obviously some of this is just ignorance of Wikipedia culture and norms, but {{em|wow}} is this the wrong attitude to start with.
Dear Help desk:

Thanks for your thoughts on how to handle this —
I am the current President of the Institute of Biological Engineering (IBE), www.ibe.org . Several of our members have expressed concern that the Biological Engineering entry is redirected to Bioengineering. There is a difference between these two names, as recognized by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology and numerous engineers and their societies. Biological Engineering is the more general discipline, including all engineering applications to living systems, while Bioengineering more narrowly refers to engineering applied to medicine and human health.

Cheers, [[User:Patrick Welsh|Patrick]] ([[User talk:Patrick Welsh|talk]]) 21:31, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
The current entry for Bioengineering reads like a description of Biological Engineering rather than Bioengineering, so I just edited it to change Bioengineering to Biological Engineering except when it is more narrowly referring to medicine. However, it would be appropriate to move this entry to Biological Engineering (rather than as currently under the Bioengineering heading) and I need your help to do that. If you would like, we could then start a more specific and accurate entry for Bioengineering.
:{{ping|Patrick Welsh}} Are there any other relevant links you know of? If not, then it seems you are overreacting and failing to AGF. It is not (yet) clear if these are nefarious people doing nefarious deeds or simply people who have a boring content dispute about a boring wikipedia article which can be solved with a boring conversation. ::I'm afraid not, just the post at [[User talk:Sgerbic]]. OneSkyWalker's account dates back to 2006, but it has only 107 edits that, at least at a glance, appear innocuous.

[[User:Patrick Welsh|Patrick]] ([[User talk:Patrick Welsh|talk]]) 21:49, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
:::Meh, my advice would be to relax and invite them to have a conversation on the talkpage. Postmodernism is not a form of pseudoscience, and you are not a psychic, so I think you have nothing to worry about. [[User:Polygnotus|Polygnotus]] ([[User talk:Polygnotus|talk]]) 21:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

:::::Some internet users expect Wikipedia to be a turnbased combat game, and it certainly ''can'' be. But there are also many articles where polite people politely disagree about topics that are not very exciting (like Postmodernism). The mention of GSoW seems to be unrelated to Postmodernism article. And, if my Google-fu is to be trusted, the GSoW secrecy is based on old unrelated drama. Nothing to worry about. [[User:Polygnotus|Polygnotus]] ([[User talk:Polygnotus|talk]]) 22:02, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
::::::Just to be sure we're not talking past one another, I'm totally fine with editors coming to the article talk page full of objections to this-or-that shortcoming. I welcome it!
::::::My problem here is that the editor did not do this. Instead, they went to the talk page of user who has not worked on the page seeking collaborators to edit the article in a way that they apparently expect in advance will wind up in arbitration.
::::::Oh, and I have no problem with Susan Gerbic. I too am opposed to pseudoscience. [[User:Patrick Welsh|Patrick]] ([[User talk:Patrick Welsh|talk]]) 22:09, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
:::::::I understand. I can think of plausible non-nefarious reasons why that editor showed up at Susans talk instead of at the Postmodernism talk. I myself have also posted on a more experienced users talkpage saying something like "I think article x is imperfect what do you think" instead of posting on the talkpage of that article because I was unsure I wanted to get involved without the support of someone saner and more experienced than I am, and as a sanity check if my opinion even made sense. Is a map slideshow possible?

    I have just uploaded three maps (each 4954 × 2868 pixels) of the Kaliningrad Oblast, one with placenames in Russian Cyrillic, one with them in Romanized Russian, and one showing the old prewar German names. Kelisi (talk) 03:59, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    @Kelisi: As that's likely to fall foul of WP:ACCESSIBILITY, I wouldn't bother but, instead, display the three adjacently. If readers want to compare them in detail they can zoom or download the images. Bazza 7 (talk) 10:52, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, that was my other idea, but if anybody else knows a solution for my first idea, I'm still all ears. Thanks. Kelisi (talk) 15:57, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wildfireupdateman :) (talk) 04:42, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    @Wildfireupdateman: Works produced by the U.S. federal government are in the public domain, so I don't think it'd be a violation. JJPMaster (she/they) 04:43, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    It's not copyrighted, so not copyvio. However, any paragraph-length direct copy must be attributed to avoid plagiarism. See WP:plagiarism. The attribution for a shorter direct copy is arguably handled by just citing the source, although that's a bit weak. It's more proper to use actual quotation marks and a cite. Plagiarisn: any copying without attribution. Copyvio: copying copyrighted material with or without attribution. -Arch dude (talk) 04:55, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Renumbering items in a table

    I have added two items (and expect I will have more to add) to the table in this entry List of New York State Historic Markers in Albany County, New York. I've looked through the archives and found this and also looked into static row numbers, but am quite uncertain about how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated, so I can understand how to fix it now and avoid the same problem when I add new entries. Many thanks. ~~~ TrudiJ (talk) 12:27, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    @TrudiJ: having read the linked helpdesk query, I think a manual update would be the simplest option. If you are making several changes you could add numbers like 86a, make a note on the talk page and then do a final manual renumbering.
    @Teratornis:, you helped in 2009, do you know if anything has changed since then? TSventon (talk) 14:43, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    You might consider {{row counter}}.

    @Trappist the monk: I am glad to see that Wikipedia's code has improved since 2009. TSventon (talk) 12:23, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @TSventon @Trappist the monk: Thank you both for helping to find the correct way to handle this. I have tried inserting and testing out {{row counter}} in several different places in the table parameters, but have struck out each time. If one of you, or another editor, could help me to place this correctly, I would appreciate it. @TrudiJ: I found an example at List of tallest buildings in Melbourne#Overall and copied the code into lines 1 and 2 and left line 3 blank, that seemed to work as expected. (Then I self reverted.) That page has a set of hidden instructions that would also needed to be adapted. TSventon (talk) 13:50, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @TSventon Thank you for all the help you have given me! I've looked over the list that you found, and found the hidden instructions. I think that given my technical ability, I will probably follow your initial suggestion of temporary letter-enhanced numbers, the corresponding note on the Talk page, and manually renumbering when I get the ones I know of into the table. Is a birth date required ...

    ... for all Wiki biographies? Although it seems to be required as per the MOS, I wasn't sure in situations when we might not find it out even after searching for third-party sources.

Augnablik (talk) 16:12, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    1. You are expected to do your best to find a date of birth; but if there is none, say so, including any comments you may find about the lack thereof in the record.
    2. Given AI's complete and utter unreliability, its tendency to hallucinate and fabricate, it's safe to say we will not allow the power of AI to mess us up. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:19, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Agreed, AI isn’t ready to do a lot of things at this point. But it’s not too early for tekkies to begin working on things they want to make use of some day … Augnablik (talk) 16:37, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    @Orangemike and @Gråbergs Gråa Sång, are either or both of you experts on Wikipedia MOS who could answer style questions occasionally? Already I have a new question that I just discovered will come up on a BLP: this one about disambiguation, which I never expected.
    Oh, if only that earlier Editor Assistance feature were still available! Augnablik (talk) 11:52, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    I'm no expert, personally I'd ask MOS-questions here or at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style. If I was after an expert, I might ask @SMcCandlish. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:40, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @Gråbergs Gråa Sång, I've just followed through on your suggestion about SMcC. I've noticed across a number of different Teahouse and Help Desk discussions that you often suggest helpful ideas to address editors' situations in unique ways — as I see you just did at my Talk page on a different matter! 😊 A double dose of thanks to you. Augnablik (talk) 02:29, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Augnablik, do you have Special:Homepage enabled? (In Special:Preferences, under "User profile", all the way at the bottom.) I think anyone who activates it should be able to get a mentor for one-on-one assistance. However, this venue and the Teahouse are very well staffed; often it's preferable to ask a question at a public venue like this: many editors will see the question, increasing the likelihood someone will have a helpful and well-informed answer. Folly Mox (talk) 13:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @Folly Mox, I do have a regular mentor — but for some of Wiki’s more esoteric style intricacies that I recently found myself facing, I thought it would be helpful to ask someone particularly involved with that sort of thing.
    Not that my mentor wouldn’t have responded; he always does. But I thought to “save him,” so to speak, for more of what he calls knotty problems with which he particularly enjoys helping and I’ve probably already peppered him way beyond my share of his time.
    The Help Desk and Teahouse are indeed very well staffed, and I’ve always been grateful for the quality of assistance at both. Augnablik (talk) 17:59, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @Folly Mox Per Wikipedia_talk:Growth_Team_features/Mentor_list#Wikipedia:Teahouse#Can_I_be_someone’s_mentee? it's still 50% new editors that "gets" a mentor. Apparently the other 50% aren't told on their homepage, but the effect is the same afaict. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:31, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Oh! I thought it had been bumped to 100%. Looks like my understanding was reversely outdated. Thank you for starting this thread about it. Folly Mox (talk) 19:26, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Knowing your interest, I restricted the scan to redirects where the target begins with the English names of two Greek letters; that's at User:Naraht/Redirects to two greek letters. When previewing a change, how do I make corrections

    I thought a while ago you could keep editing in the preview mode until you got it right, but now I don't see a way to do that. The only choices I have are to go ahead and publish as is without making needed corrections, or leave the page to abandon the edit and start over. I must be missing something! Thanks, Spalding (talk) 20:52, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    @Spalding: You have enabled "Use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor, instead of a different wikitext editor" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing. With this mode the top left of a preview page should have a left arrow < which goes back to the edit window and remembers your changes. You may have to also click X in a popup box before making other changes. Does this work? The arrow is on the same line as the publish link. Your browser interface may have a back arrow higher up. Don't use that. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:20, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Seeking Editor for Translated Wikipedia Article on Nozomi Nagata in Tribute to His Passing

Thank you very much. Any support would mean a lot.

    Original page: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/永田希?oldformat=true

    Translated page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:EternalPsyche/Nozomi_Nagata EternalPsyche (talk) 03:21, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    (moved from talk) '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talkcontribs) 05:23, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    EternalPsyche, I haven't bothered to read the page ja:永田希; but I note that it does have references. Your translation does not. Us volunteers are busy: we answer specific questions and requests, but rarely if ever requests to turn (sorry, but) half-baked drafts into articles. So put in the references yourself: links on this page (WP:HD) will take you -- not directly, but simply enough -- to pages where the mechanics of referencing are explained. -- Hoary (talk) 05:58, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    -- Except that another quick look at ja:永田希, EternalPsyche, makes it clear that a number of what are formatted like references aren't really references. (Common are the publication details of books mentioned in the body text.) Where are the reliable sources that discuss Nagata or his works in some depth? These are necessary, in order to show that he's "notable", as defined by and for Wikipedia. Note that material produced by his publishers, and what he might have said in interviews, don't count. -- Hoary (talk) 06:12, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • @EternalPsyche: I had a look at the article as well. It is a slightly WP:Promoish, using flowery and promotional language which is unsuitable for a mainspace biographical article. I put a couple of tags in that were needed. The JP references mainly constitutes interviews per Hoary's comments above. There is an obituary which is a start, but I think as he's an author, I would look for book reviews so he could pass WP:NAUTHOR. Hope that helps. scope_creepTalk 22:05, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    @Sunuraju There is no need for you to take any action to delete the draft. Abandoned drafts are automatically deleted in six months of inactivity. More likely in this case is that the film will attract some reviews once it has been released and the existing draft may help someone create an article meeting the film notability guideleines. Revision history

    Please look at User talk:Footballnerd2007 and User talk:Footballnerd2007/Archive 1. Today, the user archived their Talk page by moving it to Archive 1. Why can't I see the revision history of the Talk page? It looks like Archive 1 has the history the Talk page "should" have. Even if the user's archiving was unorthodox, I don't see how they can "eliminate" a page's history.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:13, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    @Bbb23: are you asking how Footballnerd2007 moved the history of their talk page or whether there is a rule about moving the history of their talk page? I can't find a rule, but it is obviously unhelpful to readers and thus a bad idea. TSventon (talk) 15:33, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @Bbb23: This archiving method is described at Help:Archiving a talk page/Details#Other procedures. The method is still allowed, as far as I know, but is "generally no longer used". Moving/renaming a page automatically moves the history to the new page name, as always. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:47, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    They haven't eliminated it - what they did was move their talk page to the archive, and then created a new page at the talk page (or, well, created a redirect and then turned that into a talk page).

    An interwiki redirect question

    I recently saw Fuckloads, By the fuckload, and Fuckload, all of which are soft redirects to the Wiktionary entry for fuckload. I thought that it might be reasonable to hard redirect Fuckloads and By the fuckload to Fuckload, since that's the page whose title is closest to the Wiktionary entry. But is it acceptable to redirect soft redirects to each other? JJPMaster (she/they) 22:20, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Since there is no actual Wikipedia entry for any of these, I see no reason to not just keep the soft redirects. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:17, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    There have been cases of admins from other Wikimedia projects but very few contributions on English Wikipedia, who are promoted to adminship here to facilitate particular cross-wiki tasks.
    WP:ADMINship is a position of community trust, and editors with brief tenures and few contributions have not yet had the opportunity to build that trust. Folly Mox (talk) 13:13, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    So if someone was an editor with only about 100 edits, will they be or not? No, right? Gnu779 (talk) 13:17, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    See guidance at WP:RFA. The formal requirement for adminship is 500 edits and 30 days of experience. However, a user who only meets this minimum standard is almost certain not to pass an RFA. GMGtalk 13:19, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    I wonder if this photography uploaded on en.wikipedia.org has not been made by Jacques Pavlovsky (just died in 2023) for french Sygma agency, September 18, 1975. Here other sources to evaluate this issue : https://www.gettyimages.in/detail/news-photo/belgian-cartoonist-georges-prosper-remi-aka-hergé-at-home-news-photo/1441929742

    Exactly the same type of light, same time (1975), same haircut, same shirt with rolled up sleeves and same tie, same place (at home in Brussels), ...

    And here, the same Tintin's bust statue in the exactly same state : https://www.gettyimages.in/detail/news-photo/belgian-cartoonist-georges-prosper-remi-aka-hergé-at-home-news-photo/583065342

    Hergé was very conservative about photoshootings and it's very unlikely that any other photographer could have been worked at the same period for one of his last album of Tintin press promotion.

    Regards. Tisourcier (talk) 13:20, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    @Tisourcier Looking at the NFCC tags on the image, it looks like the uploader made a good-faith effort to identify the photographer but failed. I think it's plausible that Pavlovsky is the photographer, in which case the author credit for the image should be changed. However, the image would still be usable on Wikipedia, since it meets the non-free content criteria. —C.Fred (talk) 13:34, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Article name change

    Hello, I am debating whether should I change the name for the former Kandara Airport into Jeddah Airport, or keep it the same. The term “Kandara Airport” was probably coined by the former airport’s location to the area, and that people didn’t want to confuse it with the newer King Abdulaziz International Airport (nicknamed Jeddah Airport). And also, before 1981 when the new one was built, the former one was officially named Jeddah Airport according to historical documents and videos. If I changed it, it would have been more historically accurate. Any thoughts? Bollardant (talk) 14:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    The best place to discuss this is at Talk:Kandara Airport. When a subject has more than one possible name, it is best to get a consensus before renaming the article.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 14:57, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    A notice should also be added to Talk:King Abdulaziz International Airport as Jeddah Airport redirects there. There are a couple of things that impact your edit count, depending on what tools and methodology are being used. Some are based on all contributions, while others reduce your edit county by deleted edits (sometimes called "live" edits). Plus some pages are cached, for performance reasons, so their data might lag being by a few edits (or minutes)... For more information also see WP:EDITCOUNT. Advice on appropriate informational/warning template

    A user tagged me this afternoon on another user's talk page in the context of trying to recruit other editors to collectively undermine the work of me and a collaborator in our ongoing efforts to improve Postmodernism. Please see the comment here. (Apparently this has something to do with the off-Wiki group GSoW.[3] I'd never heard of it.)

    This first editor has made only one edit to the article in question (or actually just its talk page), three years ago, with a minor question about the presence of a sidebar.

    Aside from this ping (which I suspect was an accident), they have made no efforts to contact me or to offer criticism or suggestions on the article talk page.

    Is there a template of some kind I could add to their user talk? Obviously some of this is just ignorance of Wikipedia culture and norms, but wow is this the wrong attitude to start with.

    Thanks for your thoughts on how to handle this —

And my money is on the second option. There is an article about @Sgerbic: over at Susan Gerbic. Polygnotus (talk) 21:39, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    I'm afraid not, just the post at User talk:Sgerbic. OneSkyWalker's account dates back to 2006, but it has only 107 edits that, at least at a glance, appear innocuous.
    GSoW is apparently a group that coordinates offline campaigns against stuff like pseudoscience on Wikipedia. I don't know anything about them except what's on their website, and that User:Sgerbic is the founder and principle coordinator. Patrick (talk) 21:49, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Meh, my advice would be to relax and invite them to have a conversation on the talkpage. Postmodernism is not a form of pseudoscience, and you are not a psychic, so I think you have nothing to worry about. Polygnotus (talk) 21:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Okay, I will take your advice. I really don't love the battleground mentality, however, or the deliberate secrecy. I mean why not at least try starting on the article talk page? Patrick (talk) 21:56, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Some internet users expect Wikipedia to be a turnbased combat game, and it certainly can be. Just to be sure we're not talking past one another, I'm totally fine with editors coming to the article talk page full of objections to this-or-that shortcoming. I welcome it!
    My problem here is that the editor did not do this. Instead, they went to the talk page of user who has not worked on the page seeking collaborators to edit the article in a way that they apparently expect in advance will wind up in arbitration.
    Oh, and I have no problem with Susan Gerbic. I too am opposed to pseudoscience. Patrick (talk) 22:09, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    I understand. Something to play with

    It's an AI bias checker. I'd use with extreme caution. It doesn't seem to like authoritative sources. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:57, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Yeah that is nonsense. It is simply a wrapper around an OpenAI API call. And why oh why do they hate webdesign so much? Polygnotus (talk) 22:05, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    They are demonic (favourite word of the month) sent to try you. I don't understand it. Webdesign is an establish industry with traditions. No need for it with a well established and well understood design ethos. scope_creepTalk 22:20, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Namespace number

    Why there are numbers in namespace? What is the purpose of that namespace number? Vitaium (talk) 08:42, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    @Vitaium: Probably because that's how they get stored in the database(s). Imagine you have 6 million records in a database. Much better to store a zero for each of those to denote that its an article than the string "article". Polygnotus (talk) 08:49, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @Vitaium: See Wikipedia:Namespace#Programming. Template code with namespace numbers can be copied between wikis where the names are different. Namespace numbers are also used in other places, e.g. some url's to restrict features like search or WhatLinksHere to selected namespaces. If you don't make namespace-dependent templates or tinker with url parameters then you may never need the numbers. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:56, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
