Blogcritics is a popular online magazine of news and opinion. The site — a self-proclaimed "sinister cabal of superior writers" — was founded in 2002 by Eric Olsen and Phillip Winn.

In August 2008, the blog search engine, Technorati, acquired Blogcritics for an undisclosed amount of money. As a result, publisher Olsen and technical director Winn became full-time Technorati employees. One of the first collaborative ventures of the two entities was for Blogcritics writers to begin writing descriptions of Technorati tags.
Beginning with only fifty members, Blogcritics has since gathered over 2000 contributors who work to provide original content. Perhaps the distinction that most sets Blogcritics apart from other online magazines is the democratic nature of the site; anyone with a personal blog is eligible to contribute. This is evident in the Politics section where one can always see a wide range of political views represented (and often hotly contested). One regular contributor even used the site as a platform to document his Libertarian candidacy in the Indiana Senatorial race in 2004.

At the forefront of the Blogcritics enterprise is site publisher and co-owner, Eric Olsen, who was recently named to the AlwaysOn/Technorati Open Media 100—a "power list of bloggers, social networkers, tool smiths, and investors leading the Open Media Revolution." Working alongside Olsen is a team of over twenty editors—many of whom are scattered across the country and have never met face-to-face—who offer their time and energy to the management of the ever-growing site. These editors review every article prior to publication on the site, to ensure that a high standard of quality writing is maintained.

Since the site's inception in 2002, Blogcritics has picked up a strong popular following and garnered critical acclaim. As of August 2007, the site currently receives approximately 60,000 visitors a day.

Blogcritics is a blog network and online magazine of news and opinion. The site was founded in 2002 by Eric Olsen and Phillip Winn. Blogcritics features more than 100 original articles every week, and maintains an archive of all its published content.[1]

History

[edit]

The site was founded in 2002 with 50 members and has substantially increased that number by allowing anyone to contribute. A team of editors reviews every article prior to publication on the site.[citation needed]

In August 2008, the blog search engine, Technorati, acquired Blogcritics for an undisclosed amount of money. As a result, publisher Olsen and technical director Winn became full-time Technorati employees.[2] One of the first collaborative ventures of the two entities was for Blogcritics writers to begin writing descriptions of Technorati tags.[3]

In April 2009, Blogcritics underwent a complete site redesign[4] and switched content management systems.

In his official email newsletter, sent during the week of 12 Sep 2010, publisher Eric Olsen stated that he was leaving Blogcritics and Technorati:

After eight wondrous years of blood, sweat, and cheers, I (Eric Olsen) am leaving my position as publisher of Blogcritics and Technorati and heading out into the cruel world as of Sept 15. Though I am moving on, I am extremely excited about the future of Blogcritics and Technorati and strongly encourage you to continue your relationship with these outstanding organizations!

— Eric Olsen, BC/Technorati Newsletter #63

As of November 22, 2011, Blogcritics has 3,997 blog writers registered.[5]

In March 2014, Blogcritics was acquired by executive editors Barbara Barnett and Jon Sobel under their new company Critical Lens Media, Inc.[6]

Honorable recognition

[edit]

Blogcritics has won several blog awards, including a Bloggie and recognition as a Forbes.com Best Media Blog. In addition, the site is an accredited news source for both Google News and Yahoo! News.[7]
