== Expelled members of the Chinese Communist Party category == |
TOCright |
In light of the ongoing anti-corruption campaign under Xi Jinping, many articles in the then-very large Expelled members of the Chinese Communist Party category have recently been diffused to yearly categories. However, there are a number of articles that could not be "dated" because there is no information on when they were expelled: they need information on when they were expelled, with reliable sources whenever possible. Also, some older expulsions may need to be combined into a category called "People expelled from the Chinese Communist Party before 1990" or something but I have trouble making Category series navigation detect the "cut-off" category. --Minoa (talk) 19:25, 3 November 2024 (UTC) |

::EVE Energy is a newly created article that needs to be assessed. Perhaps someone from this WikiProject could take a look at it, and also assess whether the article's title should be "EVE" or "Eve". It's possible that EVE is a translation of the company's Chinese name, but it's also possible that capitalization is just for stylistic reasons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:40, 4 November 2024 (UTC) |

While I know high schools are generally notable per WP:SCHOOLS and I want to avoid any bias issues, but this high school at least needs a name. Hello. I'm not a regular participant in this project, but I am a delegate at WP:FLC. I wanted to note that a couple featured lists I stumbled across don't meet our modern day requirements. |
Judging from the school emblem, which contains English initials of the school name, the current title appears to be right. HkCaGu (talk) 17:18, 3 June 2008 (UTC) |

To be more specific, neither one is accessible (row and column scopes are a requirement at FLC now). I don't want to nominate these for featured list removal, as they're both part of featured topics, so I thought I'd bring it up here first as an opportunity for interested editors to make the relevant improvements.
The article Hoa be removed from WikiProject China.
== Can Controversy_over_Baidu be rescued or should it be deleted? == |
There are many reasons why Hoa should not be part of the said WikiProject at all and I will only touch on some of them. Firstly, most Mainland Chinese, Hong Kongers and Taiwanese do not regard the Hoa people as being of Chinese ethnicity at all; the Hoa are considered a subset of the Vietnamese ethnicity. This fact immediately disproves the misconception amongst many people that the Hoa are somehow not ethnically Vietnamese. |
Since speedies/DRV don't registser well in the deletion discussion alerts, I'll link this discussion here. This is an article translated from zh wiki, speedied as an attack page and now being discussed at DRV (effectively a deletion discussion). Piotrus at Hanyang| reply here 03:03, 3 December 2024 (UTC) |
Another reason is that the ancestors (or at least most of them) of Hoa people are strictly speaking not ethnically Chinese. The simple reality is that the label of Chinese ethnicity was brutally imposed on non-Chinese peoples for various reasons throughout world history. For example, in the centuries following the conquest of what is now Canton and northern Vietnam by Imperial China, some of the most despicable acts were committed by the Han Chinese (and probably some sympathisers as well) against Cantonese, Teo Chew, Vietnamese and many other Viet peoples. Local culture was brutally suppressed and many local people became enslaved. In fact these acts amount to genocide and appear to have been done all in the name of Imperial expansionism. |
== Chinese numbers for Prisoners of war in World War II == |
A further reason is that putting such a label on the talk page immediately promotes an 'us and them' attitude. Many culturally minded people (both Vietnamese and non-Vietnamese) are well aware of the very close ties between Teo Chew, Cantonese and Vietnamese peoples. They lament the fact that the former two peoples have been forced to suffer the indignity of being labeled 'Chinese' on a regular basis for no gain at all. Regrettably, there are still many ignorant people out there who still try to make ridiculous claims that ethnic Vietnamese have little or nothing in common with ethnic Cantonese and Teo Chew. I am writing this; the source I am using, while recent and reliable, states that the number of Chinese POWs who died in WW2 are unknown. I assume this is a sad example of Western bias, as surely there should be some estimates for that from Chinese scholars? |

: According to zh:海東青 it seems to be a rather nondescript bird. No mythological significance seems to be attached. "Annals of Rehol" is interesting. Rehol = Jehol 熱河 here, and the book is 「熱河志」 "Chronicles of Jehol", a Ch'ing-era (1757) publication. The book does indeed mention the bird, and the description is indeed correct, but it isn't an "old legend" by any stretch. It actually seems to be copied from 「元史」 "History of Yuan", which would have been a Ming-dynasty work (1369). Quoth:「海東青亦曰海青雕之最俊者身小而捷能擒天鵝爪白者尤異次曰玉爪駿俊絕異倫一飛千里」 This is identical to the description on the Chronicles of Jehol. Looks like the Mandarin Airlines people didn't do their homework... ==Notice of Motion== |
I move: |

that in the event that the motion to rename the article Nanyue to Nam Viet is passed, the said article shall be removed from Wikiproject China immediately and meaningful measures shall be implemented to enforce the said removal.

Seriously, whoever thought that the history of Nam Viet is part of the history of China is either ignorant or simply deluded. The simple fact is that all Viet peoples (including Cantonese and Hokkien peoples as well as many peoples living south of the Yangtze River) are not ethnically Chinese and will never will! Never ever! Seriously, the brutal acts committed by the genocidal Han Chinese against the Viet peoples arguably constitute one of the worst genocides in world history.
The rampant Sino-centric bias and nonsense must stop now. So it is time that editors stopped pretending that the Cantonese and other non-Vietnamese Viet peoples have little in common with the Vietnamese people. We need to start recognising the fact that all Viet peoples share a common history of armed resistance against the barbaric invaders from the north now. 122.109.121.9 (talk) 10:39, 30 June 2008 (UTC) |
*Oppose. It is part of Chinese history, as well as that of Vietnam and 99 other non-Sinitic ethnic groups living in what is now mostly southern China (and a small part of Vietnam). The ruler of Nanyue, Zhao Tuo, was born in northern China, not the Red River Valley of Vietnam. Badagnani (talk) 16:32, 30 June 2008 (UTC) |
:Is the user aware of the fact that Trieu Da of Nam Viet assimilated to Viet culture(s)? Is he also aware that the modern-day Vietnamese ethnic group is really a supra-ethnic identity that is meant to encompass a wide range of smaller and barely distinguishable ethnic groups (many of which did NOT originate in the Red River Valley and in fact originated from places like present-day Canton)? :*Comment - So the claim is that all 100 of the Hundred Yue living in the yellow portion of this map were ethnolinguistically Vietnamese? That is quite a stretch, and quite untrue. The Hundred Yue encompassed Kam-Tai (Daic): Zhuang, Buyi, Dai, Sui (Shui), Kam (Dong), Hlai (Li), Mulam, Maonan, Ong-Be (Lingao), Thai, Lao, Shan, Hmong-Mien, and Vietnamese. Regarding Zhao Tuo's purported assimilation to the Vietnamese culture, that may have been possible had he been living in the Red River Valley; however, he lived in Panyu (today called Guangdong), which was inhabited by people similar to the Zhuang people. The Vietnamese language is Mon-Khmer while the Zhuang language is Tai-Kadai. In this light, your claims just don't make sense. Badagnani (talk) 01:53, 1 July 2008 (UTC) |

::*I was under the impression that 'Viet' is NOT a synonym for 'Vietnamese'. Since you are not the only one who seems to believe that 'Viet' means' 'Vietnamese', I think I need to make it clear that I say 'Viet', I mean 'Yue' as done in some other Wikipedia articles such as Nanyue and Yue (peoples). So I never claimed that Trieu Da assimilated to Vietnamese culture(s); I only claimed that he assimilated to one or more Yue (Viet) cultures. I wonder if the word 'Viet' has been hijacked to serve the ideologies of extremists (which apparently involves using the label 'Chinese' to smear as many non-Vietnamese Viet peoples as possible). :This motion makes no sense. Nam Viet was founded by a Chinese General, therefore it falls under the Military History of China. The descendant peoples of Nam Viet in part still populate southern China, therefore this falls under China. The area Nam Viet occupied is for the most part in China, so this falls under History of China. It's like saying that Roman Gaul isn't part of French history. Hi. I'm guessing this is a well-worn issue, but I'd appreciate some feedback/advice/pointers on the various names for the country/countries in the region known as China. My understanding/suggestion is: |
{| style="background:lavender; font-size:95%; line-height:1.2em;" cellpadding="6" |

|- |
| China |
| For non-political contexts and/or contexts whose scope extends from the present day back beyond 1912 |
|- |
| People's Republic of China |
| For the country on "mainland China" since 1949 |
|- |
| Republic of China |
| For the country with this name since 1912 and after 1948; or for the country with this name between 1912 and 1948..? |
|- |
| Republic of China (1912-1948) |
| Alternative to above for country known as the "Republic of China" between 1912 and 1948 |
|- |
| Republic of China (Taiwan) |
| For the "Republic of China" since 1949 as distinct from 1912-1948; includes its more well-known (but technically ambiguous) name "Taiwan" |
|- |
| Taiwan (island) |
| For the island called "Taiwan" in historicalanthropologicalnon-politicaletc contexts; alternatively, "Taiwan (island group)"..? |

==Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme== |
As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS. |
*The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class. |
*The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects. |
*A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here. |
Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at :Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles. |
Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Hello, I've been working on various articles about small Chinese cities. In the process, I've been trying to add information on the cities' economies. One thing that has thrown me off though is that when I try to use Google Language Tools to translate figures like "86.8亿元", it translates it as "8.68 billion yuan". Shouldn't it be "86.8 billion yuan"? Why does the decimal place get moved? Is this a bug in the translation software or is there something I don't know about Chinese numbers? I'm reluctant to use any of these figures until I can find out if the Google translation is accurate or not. Kaldari (talk) 17:07, 15 July 2008 (UTC) |

== Wikiproject workgroup on Sino-Japanese-Korean relations == |
Wikiproject Sino-Japanese-Korean relations |
I have proposed a Wikiproject workgroup on Sino-Japanese-Korean relations. |
In my opinion, Wikipedia topics on Sino-Japanese-Korean topics all too often, and unfortunately, reflect the tense, exaggerated, embittered and often politically nationalistic debates currently prevalent in the popular presses of these three great nations. |
In many case, these polemics are immature, propagandistic and unencyclopedic in nature and causes being promoted by unethical editing habits. Japanese-Korean topics appear to be amongst the more problematic topics on the Wikipedia. |
At the same time, within each nation and academic circles there are moves to create pan-national understanding and document an accurate account of history. It is therefore proposed to establish a Sino-Japanese-Korean workgroup interested in establishing good working relations to improve the academic nature of these articles and encourage normal editing. |
For the sakes of honesty and transparency, this pan-national workgroup was sincerely proposed precisely in response to the mode of operation used by many editors |
Such wasteful activities as persistent allegations, personal attacks and other distractions from the primary activity of content production and reference checking only discouraging newcomers, less aggressive and, especially, genuine academics from participating on the Wikipedia. They undermine the goodwill of the Wikipedia. |
It is hoped that by bring together authors from across the spectrum who are interested in rising above differences standards, understanding and sensitivity can be improved; just as they are in academia at present. |
Your contribution is welcome. My apologies if it is not according to the protocols to make such announcements on other WikiProjects. --Ex-oneatf (talk) 05:37, 16 July 2008 (UTC) |

== Borrowed Scenery in traditional East Asian gardens == |
I was bold and moved the article "Shakkei and the picturesque", a title no one would ever search for or link to, to the far more common and straightforward "borrowed scenery". I have done a little to bring a more worldwide view (i.e. not just Japan) into the intro sentence, and added the East Asian languages template, to represent the different ways this term is pronounced in different languages. |
A lot of work needs to be done to expand this out to cover the Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese (and other?) applications of this concept, not just the Japanese, and the Korean and Vietnamese words need to be added to the language template at the top. |
I am no expert on this subject, especially not on the non-Japanese aspects/versions of it, and so I apologize for leaving it in this half-done state, and implore anyone with an interest and an expertise in traditional East Asian gardens to contribute whatever you can. == GW Bonsall == |
I'd like to suggest adding an entry for Rev. Bramwell Seaton Bonsall, under Category: Missionaries. Below is a draft version of the entry based on Geoffrey Weatherill Bonsall's introduction to HKU Libraries' digital editions of Rev. Bonsall's translations: |
Rev. Bramwell Seaton Bonsall, M.A., B.D., DLit. (Lond,) was a Wesleyan Methodist missionary to China from 1911 to 1926. |
After his return to England he continued his interest in China and the study of its language and literature. In the late 1920s he obtained his Doctorate, that involved a complete translation of the Zhan Guo Ce (Chan Kuo Ts'e), the Records of the Warring States. |
In his retirement in the 1950s he completed a translation of all 120 chapters of the Chinese novel, the Hung Lou Meng, often known as the Dream of the Red Chamber. This was later accepted for publication by The Asia Society of New York, but the project was abandoned when Penguin announced its proposed translation by Professor David Hawkes, with John Minford. |
These two translations, made without having access to libraries or discussions with other scholars, were probably the first to be made into English of these two complete works. Copies of the original typescripts of these two translations in digital format are now available from the University of Hong Kong Libraries. |

I have just created the article on Wu Chuanyu, and have possibly conflicting sources. One reference shows him as having competed in both the 1948 and 1952 Olympics. The 1948 Official Report shows that swimmer as "Go Tjoan-Giok", the 1952 report has "Wu Chuan-yu" and the www.sports-reference.com page has "Wu Chuanyu" (and also shows 傳玉 吳). Is "Go Tjoan-Giok" an alternative romanization for the same name, or has that website got two different people confused? Expelled members of the Chinese Communist Party category
[edit]In light of the ongoing anti-corruption campaign under Xi Jinping, many articles in the then-very large Expelled members of the Chinese Communist Party category have recently been diffused to yearly categories. --Minoa (talk) 19:25, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

- EVE Energy is a newly created article that needs to be assessed. Perhaps someone from this WikiProject could take a look at it, and also assess whether the article's title should be "EVE" or "Eve". It's possible that EVE is a translation of the company's Chinese name, but it's also possible that capitalization is just for stylistic reasons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:40, 4 November 2024 (UTC)

Featured lists that need work to avoid removal nominations
[edit]Hello. I'm not a regular participant in this project, but I am a delegate at WP:FLC. I wanted to note that a couple featured lists I stumbled across don't meet our modern day requirements.
To be more specific, neither one is accessible (row and column scopes are a requirement at FLC now). I don't want to nominate these for featured list removal, as they're both part of featured topics, so I thought I'd bring it up here first as an opportunity for interested editors to make the relevant improvements. - Though I do think the specifications for column lengths could be improved (in List of emperors of the Han dynasty), I'm not bothered enough by it to force the issue or anything. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:05, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

Can Controversy_over_Baidu be rescued or should it be deleted?
[edit]Since speedies/DRV don't registser well in the deletion discussion alerts, I'll link this discussion here. This is an article translated from zh wiki, speedied as an attack page and now being discussed at DRV (effectively a deletion discussion). Piotrus at Hanyang| reply here 03:03, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
Chinese numbers for Prisoners of war in World War II
[edit]I am writing this; the source I am using, while recent and reliable, states that the number of Chinese POWs who died in WW2 are unknown. I assume this is a sad example of Western bias, as surely there should be some estimates for that from Chinese scholars?
If someone is interested in this topic area, note that we still do not have any article about Japanese war crimes against the POWs. I just finished one for the Germans, which also was missing... see the linked article for list of what we have. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:54, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- Update: I have now created Allied prisoners of war in Japan. The best estimate for Chinese POW I have is "tens of thousands every year", with an unknown fatality rate outside the somewhat shocking statistics that only 56 Chinese POWs were released after Japan surrendered. Can anyone find anything better? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 15:50, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
The article Edu-Aid in YongNing has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Unreferenced and unimproved for 15 years. No articles in Mandarin or other Chinese languages to expand. Run of the mill, very small charity. Not enough information to merge.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Bearian (talk) 02:26, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

Chen Zongying spelling
[edit]Hi there, I and another editor are discussing whether Chen Zongying should be moved to "Chen Congying". I would love additional input from editors more familiar with Chinese to English transliteration/romanization on whether the move should happen or not. Possible machine translated name for Lake Seema
[edit]This is a short article created by a student of mine, translated from zh wiki. I worry she might have invented the name (with machine translation); I am not getting any non-wikipedia hits for that. Could someone check whether it needs renaming? TIA Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:57, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, looks like an erroneous machine translation to me. Unless there are reliable sources using the spelling "Seema", it should be moved to Xima Lake or maybe Lake Xima. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 15:52, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
