The name of the school (Northwest) likely comes from its position in the Northwest portion of Jackson county. There are other school districts in the county that similarly have directional names. The school chose as its mascot the well-known figure of the Northwest Territories--the Mounties. Fittingly with this mascot, the school colors are red and black. The school purchased a mascot costume in 2008, which can now be seen at many athletic events in the district. |

Northwest has a well-respected music department. Both the bands and choirs regularly receive superior ratings at festivals. Each spring, the band and choir come together and put on a collage concert which follows the format of the University of Michigan School of Music's collage concert. This concert displays the both the large sound of Northwest bands and choirs and the impressive talent of Northwest individuals. |
