Hunger is a young adult supernatural novel written by author Michael Grant, originally published in hardcover in 2009. It is the second novel of the Gone series.

Cliffhangers
After the big Thanksgiving battle and Christmas, the young citizens of Perdido Beach are running very low on food. Sam has become the leader of the beach, with his girlfriend Astrid at his side. Sam, Quinn, Edillio, and a sixth-grader named E.Z. go on a search for more food. They come across a field that is full of fresh cabbages. E.Z. claims that he is ready for some food, even if it does make you gassy. He bends down and pulls up a cabbage, while Sam and his friends are trying to figure out a plan to get all these cabbages. Suddenly, E.Z. screams and shouts to Sam that he has something in his foot. Sam looks to the ground under E.Z. and discovers that the dirt isn't dirt. Its actually mutant worms. E.Z. is suddenly attacked and eaten by the worms, which can cut through anything except metal. His last words were, "Sam, help..." Sam is heartbroken at this loss, which he believes is his fault. Instead of taking him back to the plaza to be buried, he burns the bones with his fire power. Will the kids of Perdido Beach ever figure out how to get the food from the fields without being attacked by the mutant worms?

Meanwhile, Caine has returned to Coates Academy very weakened and immidately collapses. He wakes up a couple weeks later in a room with Diana. She says that he has been acting very strange lately. He has been using his telekinetic power in his sleep and only Diana was brave enough to be able to watch over him. He has been hurt and has also been acting possessed lately. Caine knows he must kill Sam, but will he ever recover from whatever the Darkness did to him?

Sequel
Grant announced on Twitter that the finished third book will be entitled Lies and will not be released for another year. He has stated that he is starting to write the fourth book entitled Plague.
