2009 VMA Kanye West Incident
|action2date=15:29, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
ABC's Terry Moran reported that President Obama referred to Kanye West as a "jackass" in an "off the record" interview. I think it's worthy of noting alongside the other celebrity reaction. Well..I will say this. I'm the very first person to add this to Wikipedia, you can check the history of the Taylor Swift page, which was the first place it appeared in. I totally support Taylor Swift. Kanye West shouldn't have discriminated her just because she's young, white, and sings country. Alot of people online are saying that race has nothing to do with this, and im suspecting that alot of those people are black. Race has alot to do with this unfortunately. Kanye has done this alot, like most of you know, and it's been against white people in support of other black artists, including himself. I wish people would stop saying that race has nothing to do with it. Froggy26rk (talk) 08:32, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

It's been said that this was nothing more then a publicity stunt since both Kayne and Taylor share the same agent. Also shortly after this it does appear as if Taylor has alot going on and well putting 2 and 2 together this does have publicity stunt written all over it. These commercial events would never ever permit anything to happen that was unscripted, too much is on the line. Everything that has happened at these award shows are always planned ahead of time.

::::I don't want to get into an edit war over this. The sentence and the song are about a person, Drew Hardwick. Neither are not about the name Drew Hardwick. To say that he has a particular name is simply to identify that particular person. It makes no sense to say that it is about the name. You can have a song about a name, e.g. "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash (though even this could arguably be said to be about the person and not the name), but this is not an example of that. Holford (talk) 12:31, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
}}
:::::I agree the song is about the person, but the sentence as currently structured is about the fact that the person in question has a particular name, namely, "Drew Hardwick." To write "The song is about a person named Drew Hardwick" would be incorrect, because it states that Drew Hardwick is his own name; obviously that's wrong, because Drew Hardwick is a person, not a name. We could say "The song is about Drew Hardwick," but I kind of feel phrasing it that way implies that we expect people to know who Drew Hardwick is. Actually, I don't know if we need to mention the person's name explicitly at all. VoluntarySlave (talk) 17:12, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I am completely confused by the quotation marks as they stand. If I see a proper name in quotes like this, my assumption would be that the song is about a literal real-life person Taylor Swift knew and the name in quotations was a pseudonym she used to protect his identity. If the song is actually about a guy by the name of Drew Hardwick, then it doesn't need quotation marks. However, I agree with VoluntarySlave that I don't see the point in actually NAMING the person especially since there's no notability to him that I can see. It's not like, say, "He Stopped Loving Her Today" which George Jones wrote it about Tammy Wynette, who has notability in being a famous country musician in her own right as well as the notability of being Jones' ex-wife. Hardwick is just a high school crush from what I can tell here. Correct me on this if I'm wrong. GBrady (talk) 17:29, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Factual Error
In the article it says that LeAnn Rimes is Taylor Swift's Grandmother. This is impossible due to multiple things: Firstly, LeAnn Rimes is 25 years old and secondly she has no kids, let alone grand kids. The article is semi-protected, so I can't edit it, someone else should fix that.

P.S. The source cited for this error has no evidence to support the claim. All the source says is: "It seems fitting that Taylor's first idol in country music was LeAnn Rimes. "I knew every song she ever sang," she says. LeAnn at the time was 14 years old, just starting her career." (Source 2 on Taylor Swift Wiki)

p.s. In a radio talk with Tim McGraw (Taylor Swift (Deluxe Edition) album, Track 15: Taylor's 1st Phone Call With Tim McGraw), she implied that she uses piano when writing songs. MilkPEP activities are led by a 15-member board, which is monitored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service." There is no evidence that people call her Queen of Country-Pop... And her music genre is Country not Country-pop. And I don't think the title of "Queen of Country-Pop" exists.. Greenguitar3 (talk) 01:27, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
*The folks over at AllMusic seem to think her style is country pop. From their review of Fearless: "Like many country-pop albums of the 2000s, the pop heavily outweighs the country". They list one of her styles as "country pop" in her bio. Niteshift36 (talk) 06:13, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I agree with the above post. No Beyonce was not nominated for the 'Best Female Video' award. The nominees are Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga and Pink. See attached link. http://www.mtv.com/ontv/vma/2009/best-female-video Amadao (talk) 03:16, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes it is. She was nominated for her music video "Single Ladies" that's why when Taylor Swift won, Kanye West grabbed the mic and said Beyonce's video was "one of the best videos of all time". Greenguitar3 (talk) 19:48, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

No, it's not true. Beyonce was nominated for (and won) in the category 'Video of the Year.' Taylor Swift was nominated for (and won) in the category 'Best Female Video.' The two are two separate awards, and the distinction is important because Kanye wasn't trying to say that Taylor didn't deserve the award; he was simply acknowledging (in his weird way) that he thought Beyonce's video was great. - 21:22 14 Sept. 2009

While the MTV site suggests Beyonce wasn't nominated, many sources suggest she was. At first I wondered if they were mistaken but in fact if you look at the comments here it appears it's definite she was nominated and this is clear if you watch the award show. I presume the MTV site is mistaken or perhaps it was removed for some reason relating to this controversy. Regardless while we probably can't source things to the comment section even of a newspaper blog and by the blog owner, we can source, as we should, to all the secondary sources which do say she was nominated Nil Einne (talk) 14:34, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

philanthropy
I went ahead and moved a big section of philanthropy to personal life. Business agreements and corporate endorsements are not philanthropy. In fact, they don't belong under personal life either. Perhaps they don't even qualify as being important enough to warrant space in an encyclopedia article. Jhonka 05:48, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

*I am not real fond of the idea about an endorsements section. I agree with Jhonkaman, most endorsement stuff isn't really encyclopedic. There could be exceptions (some record amount or groundbreaking area) but, in general, most celeb endorsements are just mundane. Now if you're talking something on the level of Michael Jordan and Nike (where it's money and a clothing/shoe line that becomes notable on its own), that might be different. But just getting some cash to use a guitar or make-up commercials isn't that notable to me. Niteshift36 (talk) 04:03, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Alternative as a genre
I'm thinking we need to incorporate it back into her Music career section; it just seems out of place down there near the bottom of the article. Yes, Miley Cyrus and other celebrities have controversies sections here at Wikipedia, but that is often because they have more than one controversy and the substantial information is out of place in their Music career sections. And of course all these controversy sections better left distinguished by titles...unless all are short under the simple title of Controversies like the Kanye West article.
Should alternative music be listed as one of her genres even though it is a redirect to a disambiguation page and not to an actual genre. It seems to be redundant to both folk and rock and doesn’t really add anything. Theparties (talk) 22:15, 10 November 2024 (UTC)

To be honest, I am confused about where this information is best placed within the article. Perhaps, we should simply leave it near the bottom of the article but shorten its title to Controversy. Then again, we know that even now, a lot of people who come across this article are looking for information about this topic...which means that the title may be better left distinguished (even though they would eventually fine what they are looking for soon enough).
