Rick Rubin is one of the most well-known rock and rap producers to come out of the MTV age. He started inauspiciously, producing relative unknowns who seemed to leap into the mainstream as a result of his unique, simplistic production style, including LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys & Run-D.M.C. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have asked him to produce every one of their albums since their 1991 mainstream breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magic. His well-regarded projects with some elder statemen of rock and country, including Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Donovan & Tom Petty, cemented his reputation as an all-around journeyman producer, someone who could create that spark beneath even the most popular or entrenched artist. Recently, he asked Metallica, who were plagued by infighting and growing conservatism, to look back at their two most classic albums and attempt to emulate them - producing the retro-Metallica album, Death Magnetic. Rubin is known for refreshing or clarifying an artists' musical palette, and as such, his talents are very sought after. |
