Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE) was founded in 1962, and inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. At the time it was only the fourth Engineering Institute in the Bombay region after VJTI, UDCT and IIT Bombay. It is located in Munshi Nagar, Andheri (West), Mumbai.

The students and alumni of college are colloquially referred to as SPCEians.
The College is an educational institute offering courses in the field of engineering, financially aided by the state government of Maharashtra. Until 1994, three disciplines of engineering were offered: civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. Electronics and computer science were introduced in 1995, but as a privately funded effort, as Government funding was not forthcoming. Information technology was introduced in 1998.

History
The University of Bombay continued to recognise the college as two separate institutions — Aided and Unaided. In 2005, the Unaided institution was separated from the parent college and renamed the Sardar Patel Institute of Technology(SPIT). SPIT now has its own facilities, which are independent of those of SPCE.

The college was founded in 1961 as a government-aided engineering college by Kulapati Dr. K. M. Munshi under the management of the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan. The foundation stone of the college was laid on 17 September 1961 by Yashwantrao Chavan, who was then the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The college was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962. The college
is dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, an eminent nation builder of independent India.

The college started with courses in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering with an initial intake of 40 in each branch that was subsequently increased to 60. At the time, it was only the fifth engineering institute in the Bombay region after Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, University Department of Chemical Technology, IIT Bombay and M. H. Saboo Siddik College of Engineering. The institute introduced its first post-graduate course, a Masters of Engineering (Civil) with structural engineering subjects, in 1988 with aid from the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Subsequently, a post-graduate program in mechanical engineering disciplines was also introduced.
The college hosts the annual SPACE inter-collegiate festival in January or February. An intra-college festival Techno-Break is held in the latter part of the year. The annual magazine published by students every year is titled Disha. SPCE shares campus space with Bhavan's College, the SP Jain Institute of Management, the Hansraj Morarji High School and Wadia High School. The campus has a botanical garden, a temple, a picturesque lake and a student's hostel. Since 2005 the Bhavan's Campus has boasted two separate engineering colleges in the same campus.

The college is autonomous and affiliated to the University of Mumbai for its full-time degree, post graduate, and research programs. The institute is a recognised PhD and QIP center and it is one of the TEQIP-II & TEQIP-III institutes.
The parent body, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan was among the first educational trusts to have recognised this need, and has furthered the interests of aspiring engineering students and also met the needs of the challenging world of business. Over the last forty years the college has gained an excellent reputation in the field of Technical Education. SPCE is one of the few colleges that has received grade "A+" rating for its aided courses and an "A" grade for the un-aided courses from the Government of Maharashtra.

The University of Mumbai recognised the college as two separate institutions - SPCE (Aided) offering Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering courses and SPCE (Unaided - now a separate institute called SPIT) offering Computer Engineering, Electronics & Information Technology courses. The university desired that these self-financed courses be separated and housed in a separate building and developed as a separate self-financed entity. Thus, in 2005-06 the unaided wing was formally separated from its parent college and established as Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT).
Sardar Patel College of Engineering is one of the top five engineering institutes of the state, stands apart as a symbol of quality in engineering education. Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE) is a government-aided autonomous engineering college located in Mumbai, India. It is affiliated to the University of Mumbai[1] and offers undergraduate (Bachelor) and graduate (Master) degrees in engineering. It is one of the few Mumbai University affiliated colleges that have received Grade 'A' rating from the Government of Maharashtra.[2] The college is supported by government funds, and was granted autonomous status by the UGC in June 2010.[3]

The students and alumni of college are colloquially referred to as SPCEians.

History

[edit]

The college was founded in 1961 as a government-aided engineering college by Kulapati Dr. K. M. Munshi under the management of the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan. The foundation stone of the college was laid on 17 September 1961 by Yashwantrao Chavan, who was then the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The college was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962. The college is dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, an eminent nation builder of independent India.

H. Saboo Siddik College of Engineering.[citation needed] The institute introduced its first post-graduate course, a Masters of Engineering (Civil) with structural engineering subjects, in 1988 with aid from the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Subsequently, a post-graduate program in mechanical engineering disciplines was also introduced.

The college is autonomous and affiliated to the University of Mumbai for its full-time degree, post graduate, and research programs. The institute is a recognised PhD and QIP center and it is one of the TEQIP-II & TEQIP-III institutes.[4]

Thus, in 2005-06 the unaided wing was formally separated from its parent college and established as Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT).[5][6][7]
