== Automatic taxobox system: Way to display all entries in a page's Template:Taxonomy hierarchy (preferably automatically)? ==
= August 20 =

For pages that use the template {{t|automatic taxobox}} (and related ones such as {{t|speciesbox}}), the taxonomic hierarchy displayed in the "Scientific classification" sidebar does not come from the page itself; rather, it comes from a different template which is automatically included. For example, the page [[Mammal]] automatically gets that information from the template {{t|Taxonomy/Mammalia}}. However, it only displays a limited subset of the information from that template, mainly (but not necessarily entirely) of the "Kings Play Chess On Fine Gold Stools" type. So you'll notice that the "Mammal" page displays seven levels, whereas the "Taxonomy/Mammalia" template that it pulls them from knows about twenty-five levels.
==Change didn't save==
I was on the complete list of animated movies page and noticed that one movie ("Open Season 3") was not listed under 2011 releases, so I edited the list and added the movie to the list (I was logged in) and then clicked on "show changes." It showed the change that I made, but when I left the editing page and went back to the list page, my edit was not there! Why is that? [[User:Bigbird13041|Bigbird13041]] ([[User talk:Bigbird13041|talk]]) 00:32, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
:Because you didn't save your change, you just looked at what you were changing. Next time, his save changes. <span style="font-family:monospace;">[[User:Dismas|Dismas]]</span>|[[User talk:Dismas|(talk)]] 00:49, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
::I see you got it figured out on your own. Also, film titles should be in ''italics'' and not "double quotes". You can make something italic by wrapping it in two single quotes as opposed to using double quotes. (just don't hold down the shift key to get a single quote) Films, novels, television shows, and music albums go in ''italics'' whereas shorter works such as songs, TV episodes, and short stories go in "double quotes". <span style="font-family:monospace;">[[User:Dismas|Dismas]]</span>|[[User talk:Dismas|(talk)]] 00:59, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
::<small>Dismas, your instructions about holding down the shift depend on which national [[keyboard layout]] the user has. For example, here in the UK, double quote is shift-2</small> --[[User:ColinFine|ColinFine]] ([[User talk:ColinFine|talk]]) 22:13, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

I get the reasoning -- it's like a "Greatest Hits" album -- but I like seeing the whole thing. I understand you can click on the editing icon next to "Scientific classification" to go to the associated taxonomy template, but I'm wondering if there's some way to have them displayed inline on the page instead of switching to a new page. Preferably I'd like this to be automatic, like a preference setting or maybe a user CSS setting. Does anyone know of such a thing? Thanks. - [[User:Rwv37|Rwv37]] ([[User talk:Rwv37|talk]]) 00:59, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

What is the closest article that has a similar infobox to a country, but for the whole world? [[User:Interstellarity|Interstellarity]] ([[User talk:Interstellarity|talk]]) 01:29, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
:Hi KAVEBEAR. I reverted the article to just before the first corrupt timeline. I'm not very familiar with the the process, but I looked over [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:EasyTimeline/syntax#DateFormat the reference for EasyTimeline syntax], and it looks like, from the errors generated as shown on [http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=List_of_monarchs_of_Hawaii&oldid=380044766 the last article version with the attempted timeline]:
:# the 'from' attribute for Period cannot start earlier than 01/01/1800, and you were trying to start it on 01/01/1795. This seems to render the entire Period command invalid, which in turn leads to the two following errors
:# the 'start' attribute for ScaleMajor is invalid because of the invalid Period command
:# PlotData is invalid because of the invalid period command

:Basically, it looks like you can't use EasyTimeline to create a timeline that starts before 01/01/1800. What I don't have an answer for, sadly, is how proceed. :::Sorry, {{U|Interstellarity}}, I don't know. I did guess, however; and what I found surprised me. We have [[Coal mining]] and [[Coal-mining region]], and exploring the latter we encounter [[:Category:Coal mining regions by country]] and [[:Category:Coal mining regions in the United States]]. As coalfields can of course cross borders, it makes sense that [[Coal mining in Wyoming]], for example, is independent of "coal mining regions". Still, it's somewhat odd. None of the (few) coal-mining-related pages I looked at have infoboxes; but it's easy to imagine how a single infobox template could be used for regions; for provinces, etc; and for nations. -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 08:53, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

== Which place to go to for help in resolving a dispute ==
== Ligatures ==

I find myself in a disagreement—a dispute, I’d have to say—with other editors of a biographical article on [[Ian Stevenson]], an American psychiatrist who researched cases in which children claim to remember past lives.
[http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Julius_Caesar&diff=prev&oldid=379852753 This] edit summary says ligatures aren't used. I can't find the guideline stating that, can someone else enlighten me on current practice or guidelines? Thanks. [[User:Dougweller|Dougweller]] ([[User talk:Dougweller|talk]]) 05:43, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

I have been seeking to resolve the dispute through polite and constructive talk, but given the responses so far, it seems we may need some help. My question concerns which avenue for [[WP:dispute resolution|dispute resolution]] would seem most appropriate.
:The closest I can find is: [[Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English)#Modified letters]], which deals more with the naming of articles, but is germaine to this issue; it says "One recurrent issue has been the treatment of ae and oe and their variants. By and large, Wikipedia uses œ and æ to represent the Anglo-Saxon ligature. '''For Latin or Greek-derived words, use e or ae/oe, depending on modern usage and the national variety of English used in the article.'''" (emphasis mine). Thus, Caesar is more appropriate than Cæsar. --[[User:Jayron32|<font style="color:#000099">Jayron</font>]]'''''[[User talk:Jayron32|<font style="color:#009900">32</font>]]''''' 06:09, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

The issue in brief: On December 6, without prior discussion, one editor, being bold, deleted from various parts of the article 16,703 bytes of text. On the same day, he was joined by another editor, who deleted 1,009 bytes more. The edits undid roughly a year’s worth of work by me and other editors. The deletions consisted largely of material from high-quality reliable sources.

To complicate matters: On the [[Talk:Ian Stevenson|Talk page]] and the [[WP:FTN|Fringe Theories Noticeboard]], the first editor went in for what might reasonably be seen as personal attacks.

Given the overwhelming extent of the sudden edits, I suggested on the Talk page that we restore the article to its previous state and then use a process of “talking and editing” to go through proposed deletions. Several editors quickly responded that we should do the opposite: Leave all the deletions in place and then incrementally consider what I might wish to see restored.
::Thanks. [[User:Dougweller|Dougweller]] ([[User talk:Dougweller|talk]]) 20:34, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

It appears to me that the editors responding are like-minded souls, at least some well known to one another—a “local consensus”—and that we would benefit from “outside” input.
== anonymous contributions ==

My question concerns how to proceed. Should I post an [[WP:RfC|RfC]]? Should I go to the [[WP:Dispute Resolution Noticeboard|Dispute Resolution Noticeboard]]”? Or what? I especially ask because although this essentially seems to me a content dispute, it also involves behaviors, such as [[WP:no personal attacks|personal attacks]] and [[WP:disruptive|disruptive editing]], that would seem to deserve review.

:(ec)If it is a truly new idea, this isn't the forum. If the subject is notable, and you have [[WP:RS|reliable source]]s, then we have some useful advice:
:Writing an article for Wikipedia is harder than many people realize. Even professional writers find that the format and style needed for a good encyclopedia article are different than what might be appropriate for other venues. You could:
* '''Get someone else to do it'''—If your only goal is to make sure that an article is added to Wikipedia, you can [[WP:RA|request that someone write an article on the subject]].
* '''Start by editing other articles'''—If you are interested in becoming an editor at Wikipedia, our experience demonstrates that it is better to start by improving existing articles, which will help you get a sense of how this place works, and then you will be ready to write your first article from scratch. A good place to visit is [[WP:BL|the Wikipedia backlog]], where there are literally hundreds of thousands of articles needing help from editors. Find an article in a subject area you know, and add a source, or a reference, or simply help write it better.
* '''Go ahead and try'''—If you do decide to write an article immediately, please read [[WP:COI|our policy on conflicts of interest]], then read [[WP:FIRST|our guide to writing your first article]], which will repeat some of the good advice above. Then please use the [[Wikipedia:Article wizard 2.0|Article wizard]], which will help you through the steps. I urge you to accept the option to save your first draft in your [[Wikipedia:User page#How to create a user subpage|user subpage]], which will reduce the chance your work will be deleted before it is ready.

:Pages are renamed by [[Help:Moving a page|moving]] them to new target names. This procedure preserves the page's [[Help:Page history|edit history]]. Please do not rename a page by copying/pasting its content to a new page name. If you have an account that is at least four days old and have made more than 10 edits ([[WP:AUTOCONFIRM|autoconfirmed]]), you can move a page yourself, but please first review [[Wikipedia:Naming conventions]]. If you still wish to rename the page, go to it, click the drop-down menu at the top (near the ''History'' button and ''Watchlist'' star), and choose ''Move''. :My advise is to be patient, a day is a really short time to wait for response here in Wikipedia. :::Hello, @[[User:Thehistorianisaac|Thehistorianisaac]]. There isn't anybody. A WikiProject dies because nobody (or not enough) volunteer editors are willing to spend any time on it. == Renumbering items in a table ==
As you can see, an anonymous user keeps adding The Hangover (and other films) to the list of associated movies, even though this film does not meet the definition of the list (since none of the "Frat Pack" stars appear in the movie).

I have added two items (and expect I will have more to add) to the table in this entry [[List of New York State Historic Markers in Albany County, New York]]. They are the first #86 (Oriskatach) and the first #141 (Van der Zee Manor House). (Note: reviewing the table, I see Oriskatach actually claimed number 86, but now there are two number 87s.) However, because I copied and pasted an existing entry to work from, the row numbers were duplicated. I can go in and renumber all the items starting with the second #87, but I wonder if a template or other device was used that can now renumber the entries? I've looked through the archives and found [[Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2009 April 23|this]]<nowiki> and also looked into static row numbers, but am quite uncertain about how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated, so I can understand how to fix it now and avoid the same problem when I add new entries. == When previewing a change, how do I make corrections ==
For several years, Wikipedia seems to have missed the point that all of our 5200 faculty and students at Linda Christas College run information through the same IP. The schools use a central IP as the only way we can identify ourselves as an coordinated institution.

I thought a while ago you could keep editing in the preview mode until you got it right, but now I don't see a way to do that. The only choices I have are to go ahead and publish as is without making needed corrections, or leave the page to abandon the edit and start over. I must be missing something! Thanks, [[User:Spalding|Spalding]] ([[User talk:Spalding|talk]]) 20:52, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
I don't know how many times Wikipedia editors have "discovered" that submissions from LC come from the same IP and have misinterpreted that information.
:{{ping|Spalding}} You have enabled "Use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor, instead of a different wikitext editor" at [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing]]. With this mode the top left of a preview page should have a left arrow '''<''' which goes back to the edit window and remembers your changes. You may have to also click '''X''' in a popup box before making other changes. Does this work? The arrow is on the same line as the publish link. Your browser interface may have a back arrow higher up. Don't use that. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 21:20, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

== Seeking Editor for Translated Wikipedia Article on Nozomi Nagata in Tribute to His Passing ==
However, I really don't want to do the work just to be beaten up by editors who are uninformed regarding online education or who use Wikipedia as a source of personal self worth.

My friend, Nagata Nozomi, a Japanese author, has recently passed away. In honor of him, I have translated his Wikipedia page into English and would like to publish it. The translation is complete, but I need assistance with editing it to meet Wikipedia’s standards, properly citing sources, and ensuring it adheres to Wikipedia’s writing format. I don’t have previous experience with editing or the Wikipedia writing style, so I would deeply appreciate the help of a kind editor or a volunteer to make the necessary adjustments.

Us volunteers are busy: we answer specific questions and requests, but rarely if ever requests to turn (sorry, but) half-baked drafts into articles. So put in the references ''yourself'': links on this page ([[WP:HD]]) will take you -- not directly, but simply enough -- to pages where the mechanics of referencing are explained. You say he had a "unique approach to reading" without saying what this approach was. What was it? (And which authoritative source, independent of Nagata, writes that it was unique?) You say that "Nagata's passion for literature was deeply influenced by his fascination with noise and industrial music" but you don't say what the influence was. What was it? ::*{{ping|EternalPsyche}} I had a look at the article as well. It is a slightly [[WP:Promo]]ish, using flowery and promotional language which is unsuitable for a mainspace biographical article. I put a couple of tags in that were needed. The JP references mainly constitutes interviews per Hoary's comments above. There is an obituary which is a start, but I think as he's an author, I would look for book reviews so he could pass [[WP:NAUTHOR]]. If you can find a couple of reviews for each of the books, 2 or 3 covered with a couple of reviews each would be ideal, then he will pass WP:NAUTHOR. However, the article itself needs substantial work. It reads a blog entry, is promo, so currently unsuitable for Wikipedia. You would need to send it to draft once you got the reviews. == Intersection of "What links here" for two pages ==
::Wikipedia's notability guidelines for an organisation like Linda Christas College are at [[WP:ORG]]. Company articles are deleted from Wikipedia all the time because they don't meet the inclusion criteria. This usually happens to articles about companies that (a) fail to satisfy [[WP:ORG]], and/or (b) are promotional, not descriptive, in nature. As yet, nobody has supplied an article about the Linda Christas organisation which has not fallen foul of either (a), or (b), or both. As Orange Mike's links show, the usual response to this is an orchestrated deluge of complaints from people connected with the organisation, praising it and accusing Wikipedia of joining a conspiracy to suppress coverage of it. This misses the point and (fairly or unfairly) arouses suspicion about the motives of the writers and the organisation. [[WP:OR|Personal anecdotes]] aren't acceptable source material on Wikipedia, which does [[WP:NOT|not]] exist to enhance the credibility or public profile of any company or organisation. If LCC is an "online educational force" and has won meaningful accolades for its operations, this will doubtless have been picked up and reported by [[WP:RS|credible independent media sources]] and may be the subject of academic study. All you need to do is find such citations, use them to support a neutral, factual article about LCC that satisfies the inclusion criteria, submit it and it will stick. Do bear [[WP:LUC|this point]] in mind, though. Once an article is on Wikipedia, every part of it can and will be edited by other users. Neither the original contributor nor LCC will have any special control over it, or any right to have it deleted if it evolves into a very different article from the original version. I see the user in question is now [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Christas_College_prefix:Wikipedia:Deletion_review soap-boxing in article space], moreover when I google this organisation, the first thing I find on their site is a story about how they have hired someone who is going to attempt to get them more highly placed on the web. :Before somebody kindly fixed it, reference 22 told the reader (in red) "Check date values in: |date=". This means that the value specified for the date is invalid. And the cite template read "date=20144", which (as it has not four but five digits) is several thousand years into the future. -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 06:09, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

==[[Emma Thynn, Marchioness of Bath]]==
I browsed to Fakebook just to see if such variation exists. I found one but got doubts if I installed any malware by visiting that page. So I searched Wikipedia for "FakeBook". It only has two entries and neither of them refer to the website. I am wondering if someone (or me) can research the site to see if it carries a malicious payload (as it is variation of Facebook) and write a little about it. I also want the Disambiguation page to list the website so users can be aware of that site - that will make the information complete. But I don't know how to go about it? How do I get to add it the disambiguation page and if I am authorized to do so. Also, if I can create a page of the said website after checking on the website to see if it is malicious.
ref number 6 is in the red too - Im sorry, I will try not do any more editing this year! Please fix this reef. Thank you in advance. [[User:Srbernadette|Srbernadette]] ([[User talk:Srbernadette|talk]]) 09:42, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

[[User:Julietteangelique|Julietteangelique]] ([[User talk:Julietteangelique|talk]]) 11:44, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
:The question you need to answer first is do you meet Wikipedia's notability guidlines. There are two you should look at, [[WP:Notability]] and [[WP:BIO]]. THe first one is the general notability and the second is the biographical specific guideline. You don't have to meet both just one. Next you should read our [[WP:COI|conflict of interest]] policy. You obviously have a conflict of interest in this situation. Then if if you think you meet the notability guidelines and you can write a neutral article about yourself, then you should read about writing your [[WP:FIRST|first article]]. Hello, I am debating whether should I change the name for the former [[Kandara Airport]] into Jeddah Airport, or keep it the same. The term “Kandara Airport” was probably coined by the former airport’s location to the area, and that people didn’t want to confuse it with the newer [[King Abdulaziz International Airport]] (nicknamed Jeddah Airport). And also, before 1981 when the new one was built, the former one was officially named Jeddah Airport according to historical documents and videos. If I changed it, it would have been more historically accurate. Any thoughts? [[User:Bollardant|Bollardant]] ([[User talk:Bollardant|talk]]) 14:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

According to [[WP:PROTECT]], "Administrators are able to protect a page ..." However, in the [[Hugh Jackman]] article, on January 26, 2010, [[User:Jéské Couriano]] added indefinite semi-protection to the article. However, according to [[special:ListUsers]], Couriano is not an admin. Is it that only admins are ''supposed'' to add protection but others can (improperly) do so? To be clear, I'm not saying that the Jackman article didn't merit semi-protection as there was a fair amount of reversion history preceding the protection (although I'm not sure that indefinite semi-protection was warranted), I'm just questioning how the policy is intended to work and whether the editor had the authority to add the protection. As an aside, Couriano didn't specify a reason for the protection, which also doesn't conform to policy.--[[User:Bbb23|Bbb23]] ([[User talk:Bbb23|talk]]) 21:45, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

:::Generally, once someone is an admin, they remain so as long as they are active on Wikipedia. The easiest way I know to discover whether someone ''used'' to be admin is to see if [[WP:Requests for adminship/Example User]] (replacing Example User with the relevant name) is a redlink or a bluelink. The only one that comes to mind, although I'm sure there are more, is [[WP:Requests for adminship/Archtransit]] (was an admin and is not any longer). == [[Graham Chapman]] ==

Aside from this ping (which I suspect was an accident), they have made no efforts to contact me or to offer criticism or suggestions on the article talk page.
I'm a bit iffy on the whole biography thing on Wikipedia. Isn't the image in the infobox in violation of some fair-use guideline, simply because the image is of Graham Chapman ''as'' a character? Also, the image is copyrighted and no permission was granted to have it shown representing Graham Chapman as himself. On the other hand, the image could be moved down into the article if it supports a discussion of, say, Monty Python or the sketch or the character being performed by Chapman, with a caption specifying it as such, correct? In which case, the infobox should have no image in it, unless a suitable one is found. But because Chapman is no longer living, I also don't know if that affects any of the guidelines. On the [[Heads-up display (GUI)]] page all the text under the heading '''Video Games''' is pushed over into a narrow column on the right hand side of the page.

Automatic taxobox system: Way to display all entries in a page's Template:Taxonomy hierarchy (preferably automatically)?

For pages that use the template {{automatic taxobox}} (and related ones such as {{speciesbox}}), the taxonomic hierarchy displayed in the "Scientific classification" sidebar does not come from the page itself; rather, it comes from a different template which is automatically included. For example, the page Mammal automatically gets that information from the template {{Taxonomy/Mammalia}}.

Thanks. - Rwv37 (talk) 00:59, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Rwv37, does Template:Automatic taxobox/doc § Forcing a taxon to display not describe what you're trying to do? Folly Mox (talk) 14:04, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Folly Mox, thanks, but no, that's not the same thing: What I'm hoping for is when I go to an article like Mammal, In it's sidebar, I will see the whole taxonomic tree from the {{Taxonomy/Mammalia}} template. What you've mentioned is a way to force one specific item (not all of them) from the taxonomic tree of the template to show up in the article's sidebar for everyone (not just me). Thanks again, though! - Rwv37 (talk) 22:37, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Question about an article

What is the closest article that has a similar infobox to a country, but for the whole world? Interstellarity (talk) 01:29, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Interstellarity, do you perhaps mean "Among articles that have as their subject the entire world, which has/have an infobox that is closest to that used for an individual country?"? If not, please elucidate. -- Hoary (talk) 01:55, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary To be clear, yes, that is what I was talking about. Interstellarity (talk) 02:26, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, Interstellarity, I don't know. I did guess, however; and what I found surprised me. We have Coal mining and Coal-mining region, and exploring the latter we encounter Category:Coal mining regions by country and Category:Coal mining regions in the United States. As coalfields can of course cross borders, it makes sense that Coal mining in Wyoming, for example, is independent of "coal mining regions". Still, it's somewhat odd. None of the (few) coal-mining-related pages I looked at have infoboxes; but it's easy to imagine how a single infobox template could be used for regions; for provinces, etc; and for nations. -- Hoary (talk) 08:53, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Which place to go to for help in resolving a dispute

I find myself in a disagreement—a dispute, I’d have to say—with other editors of a biographical article on Ian Stevenson, an American psychiatrist who researched cases in which children claim to remember past lives.

I have been seeking to resolve the dispute through polite and constructive talk, but given the responses so far, it seems we may need some help. My question concerns which avenue for dispute resolution would seem most appropriate.

To complicate matters: On the Talk page and the Fringe Theories Noticeboard, the first editor went in for what might reasonably be seen as personal attacks.

It appears to me that the editors responding are like-minded souls, at least some well known to one another—a “local consensus”—and that we would benefit from “outside” input.

My question concerns how to proceed. Should I post an RfC? Should I go to the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard”? Or what? I especially ask because although this essentially seems to me a content dispute, it also involves behaviors, such as personal attacks and disruptive editing, that would seem to deserve review.

I have practically no experience with dispute resolution outside of discussion on Talk pages, so I would be grateful for advice.

    Thank you.

    Cordially, O Govinda (talk) 02:13, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If there has been extensive discussion on the article talk pages, and whatever content issue is not resolved by either editors involved (i.e. no consensus was able to be reached), than the DRN is the place to go. If behavior issues are in play, and such editor(s) fail to respond accordingly and with no regard for our policies and guidelines, than report it to admins. 2601AC47 (talk·contribs·my rights) Isn't a IP anon 02:20, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I took a good look at the talk, and I would suggest taking into consideration what Psychologist Guy has told you for the last year and a half as far as that is concerned, especially about fringe theories. If it's a simple dispute (at this rate unlikely) between you two, than try getting a 3rd opinion. 2601AC47 (talk·contribs·my rights) Isn't a IP anon 02:32, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
O Govinda has repeatedly attempted to rewrite the article about Stevenson to present him in a more favourable light spanning over half a decade, and been repeatedly opposed every time. Govinda should probably WP:DROPTHESTICK at this point. Hemiauchenia (talk) 04:01, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I note here that O Govinda was yesterday indefinitely blocked from both Ian Stevenson and its Talk page because of their disruptive editing; specifically, for pushing fringe views against consensus. This discussion can thus be closed. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 23:18, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Where do I ask questions if the wikiproject is practically inactive

Recently asked for help on wikiproject law enforcement, it's been a day already and nobody has responded(other than an update by me).

May I ask where to ask for help if the wikiproject is practically inactive?

If I have to, i might also ask for help on wikiproject china but doesn't seem like it is particularly active either.

(also if possible help out on fixing wikipedia articles on chinese law enforcement and the wikimedia commons category, the entire place is a huge mess) Thehistorianisaac (talk) 10:11, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My advise is to be patient, a day is a really short time to wait for response here in Wikipedia. You should be aware that Wikipedia editors are volunteers, and are not obligated to keep up with quotas or progress. For your requests, you basically need to wait for someone who is interested in these topics to help out. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 11:38, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, but I just want to know where to ask for help since wikiproject law enforcement is considered to be only semi-active Thehistorianisaac (talk) 11:43, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Thehistorianisaac. There isn't anybody. A WikiProject dies because nobody (or not enough) volunteer editors are willing to spend any time on it. The talk page, or talk pages of associated WikiProjects, are the most likely places to find people who are interested in reviving it, but there is no guarantee you will find anybody. It's a bit like asking "Where can I go for help to revive my local tennis club/book club/drama society that seems to have died?" ColinFine (talk) 14:10, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    That's sad
But good news it is still sort of semi-active, and sorting out wikimedia categories is stuff most people can do Thehistorianisaac (talk) 14:13, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that (semi)simple commons-category cleanups probably don't require project collaboration. For example, if there are two different cats, one for each of two different topics, but files are mis-placed, just change the cat. If one topic with a cat is a subtopic of another, likewise easy to put all the subtopic's files in a subcat rather than the parent-cat. There are some tools we have on commons that can help if there are lots of files to do at once. Let me know if you need help with that. DMacks (talk) 16:43, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for offering to help, so far the first problem i found is just simply people put the category for armed police(gendarme) in the category for people's police/public security bureaus(local civilian police) when it comes to categories for police inside a city; for this i will make another category for law enforcement in that city to split apart local civilian police and the armed police.
After this it's mostly just adding categories to other categories. Thehistorianisaac (talk) 03:33, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a good plan. A tag like {{About|what this one is about|what the other one is about instead|other cat name}} in each could help both readers and editors make sure they understand what is where. DMacks (talk) 07:51, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Names of media

I'm working on the article about Jorge Lanata, a journalist from Argentina. It is needed to mention several non-fiction media releases he has worked in: TV programs, newspapers, magazines, documentaries, etc; all with names in Spanish, and only some with articles to link. Which is the correct way to write them? Simple prose, as if the names are words like any other, as in Periodismo para todos? Quotation marks, as in "Periodismo para todos"? Italics, as in Periodismo para todos? Cambalachero (talk) 15:38, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Please see MOS:TITLE. ColinFine (talk) 18:18, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think best way is to use italics for TV programs, magazines, and newspapers (e.g., Periodismo para todos) and "quotation marks" for articles or episodes.
Italics: For TV programs, documentaries, newspapers, and magazines (e.g., Periodismo para todos).
Quotation Marks: For articles, episodes, or smaller works (e.g., "El Robo del Siglo"). Ayohama (talk) 12:07, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Accidentally created new article

I was in the process of creating an article for one of Abraham Lincoln's descendants when I saw that there was an AfD discussion for deleting it some time ago. I already published the page anyways as I was planning on coming back to it to continue editing before I saw the discussion. Any help on deleting/un-publishing? Thanks. Qqars (talk) 17:16, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Qqars: I have marked the page for G7 speedy deletion for you. Next time, you can just add {{db-author}} to the top of any page you made that you want deleted. JJPMaster (she/they) 17:19, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thank you! I did see that but I wasn't sure if it would work since I didn't think this was in my own user space. Qqars (talk) 17:35, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Qqars. {{db-author}} isn't limited to user space, but it is limited to files with no significant contributions from anybody else. ColinFine (talk) 18:19, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Qqars: Another possibility for the case of wanting to continue working on it can be to move it to draft space; so "Foo" becomes "Draft:Foo". Feline Hymnic (talk) 10:50, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Is a map slideshow possible?

I have just uploaded three maps (each 4954 × 2868 pixels) of the Kaliningrad Oblast, one with placenames in Russian Cyrillic, one with them in Romanized Russian, and one showing the old prewar German names. I would like to be able to display these in one or two articles as a slideshow without sacrificing resolution or size so that a user can pore over the map as it were, full size, and see the names change every 15 seconds or so. I have tried .gif animation, but online apps always see fit to shrink the images and it does not work the way I'd like it to. Is there a way in which what I want can be done? Kelisi (talk) 03:59, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kelisi: As that's likely to fall foul of WP:ACCESSIBILITY, I wouldn't bother but, instead, display the three adjacently. If readers want to compare them in detail they can zoom or download the images. Bazza 7 (talk) 10:52, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Copyvio or acceptable?

The article 1990 Luzon earthquake has two paragraphs with CN tags that are copied from https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00001734.htm. Would this be allowed per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright#Can_I_add_something_to_Wikipedia_that_I_got_from_somewhere_else? or would it be copyvio? Wildfireupdateman :) (talk) 04:42, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Wildfireupdateman: Works produced by the U.S. federal government are in the public domain, so I don't think it'd be a violation. JJPMaster (she/they) 04:43, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's not copyrighted, so not copyvio. However, any paragraph-length direct copy must be attributed to avoid plagiarism. See WP:plagiarism. The attribution for a shorter direct copy is arguably handled by just citing the source, although that's a bit weak. It's more proper to use actual quotation marks and a cite. Plagiarisn: any copying without attribution. Copyvio: copying copyrighted material with or without attribution. -Arch dude (talk) 04:55, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Renumbering items in a table

I have added two items (and expect I will have more to add) to the table in this entry List of New York State Historic Markers in Albany County, New York. I've looked through the archives and found this and also looked into static row numbers, but am quite uncertain about how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated, so I can understand how to fix it now and avoid the same problem when I add new entries. Many thanks. ~~~ TrudiJ (talk) 12:27, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@TrudiJ: having read the linked helpdesk query, I think a manual update would be the simplest option. If you are making several changes you could add numbers like 86a, make a note on the talk page and then do a final manual renumbering.
@Teratornis:, you helped in 2009, do you know if anything has changed since then? TSventon (talk) 14:43, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@TSventon Thank you for all the help you have given me! I've looked over the list that you found, and found the hidden instructions. Is a birth date required ...

... for all Wiki biographies? Although it seems to be required as per the MOS, I wasn't sure in situations when we might not find it out even after searching for third-party sources.

Incidentally, as I tried to figure out where else in Wikidom I might get help on this miniscule point, I came across something called "Editor Assistance," which was supposed to offer one-on-one assistance. What a disappointment to learn at the landing page that it was no longer available and the page was being kept merely for historical reference. I hope the Wiki tekkies are working on something using the power of AI to take its place. Augnablik (talk) 16:12, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    1. You are expected to do your best to find a date of birth; but if there is none, say so, including any comments you may find about the lack thereof in the record.
    2. Given AI's complete and utter unreliability, its tendency to hallucinate and fabricate, it's safe to say we will not allow the power of AI to mess us up. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:19, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, AI isn’t ready to do a lot of things at this point. But it’s not too early for tekkies to begin working on things they want to make use of some day … Augnablik (talk) 16:37, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Augnablik (talk) 02:29, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Augnablik, do you have Special:Homepage enabled? (In Special:Preferences, under "User profile", all the way at the bottom.) I think anyone who activates it should be able to get a mentor for one-on-one assistance. However, this venue and the Teahouse are very well staffed; often it's preferable to ask a question at a public venue like this: many editors will see the question, increasing the likelihood someone will have a helpful and well-informed answer. Folly Mox (talk) 13:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Folly Mox, I do have a regular mentor — but for some of Wiki’s more esoteric style intricacies that I recently found myself facing, I thought it would be helpful to ask someone particularly involved with that sort of thing.
Not that my mentor wouldn’t have responded; he always does. But I thought to “save him,” so to speak, for more of what he calls knotty problems with which he particularly enjoys helping and I’ve probably already peppered him way beyond my share of his time.
The Help Desk and Teahouse are indeed very well staffed, and I’ve always been grateful for the quality of assistance at both. Augnablik (talk) 17:59, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Folly Mox Per Wikipedia_talk:Growth_Team_features/Mentor_list#Wikipedia:Teahouse#Can_I_be_someone’s_mentee? it's still 50% new editors that "gets" a mentor. When previewing a change, how do I make corrections

I thought a while ago you could keep editing in the preview mode until you got it right, but now I don't see a way to do that. @Spalding: You have enabled "Use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor, instead of a different wikitext editor" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing. With this mode the top left of a preview page should have a left arrow < which goes back to the edit window and remembers your changes. You may have to also click X in a popup box before making other changes. Does this work? The arrow is on the same line as the publish link. Your browser interface may have a back arrow higher up. Seeking Editor for Translated Wikipedia Article on Nozomi Nagata in Tribute to His Passing

Thank you very much. Any support would mean a lot.

    Original page: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/永田希?oldformat=true

    Translated page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:EternalPsyche/Nozomi_Nagata EternalPsyche (talk) 03:21, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    (moved from talk) '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talkcontribs) 05:23, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
EternalPsyche, I haven't bothered to read the page ja:永田希; but I note that it does have references. Your translation does not. Us volunteers are busy: we answer specific questions and requests, but rarely if ever requests to turn (sorry, but) half-baked drafts into articles. So put in the references yourself: links on this page (WP:HD) will take you -- not directly, but simply enough -- to pages where the mechanics of referencing are explained. Don't make Japanese script oblique ("italic"); doing so is ugly. And -- but no, that's enough for now. Happy editing! -- Hoary (talk) 05:58, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
-- Except that another quick look at ja:永田希, EternalPsyche, makes it clear that a number of what are formatted like references aren't really references. (Common are the publication details of books mentioned in the body text.) Where are the reliable sources that discuss Nagata or his works in some depth? These are necessary, in order to show that he's "notable", as defined by and for Wikipedia. Note that material produced by his publishers, and what he might have said in interviews, don't count. -- Hoary (talk) 06:12, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • @EternalPsyche: I had a look at the article as well. It is a slightly WP:Promoish, using flowery and promotional language which is unsuitable for a mainspace biographical article. I put a couple of tags in that were needed. The JP references mainly constitutes interviews per Hoary's comments above. There is an obituary which is a start, but I think as he's an author, I would look for book reviews so he could pass WP:NAUTHOR. Hope that helps. scope_creepTalk 22:05, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Sunuraju There is no need for you to take any action to delete the draft. Abandoned drafts are automatically deleted in six months of inactivity. Revision history

Please look at User talk:Footballnerd2007 and User talk:Footballnerd2007/Archive 1. Today, the user archived their Talk page by moving it to Archive 1. Why can't I see the revision history of the Talk page? It looks like Archive 1 has the history the Talk page "should" have. Even if the user's archiving was unorthodox, I don't see how they can "eliminate" a page's history.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:13, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Bbb23: are you asking how Footballnerd2007 moved the history of their talk page or whether there is a rule about moving the history of their talk page? I can't find a rule, but it is obviously unhelpful to readers and thus a bad idea. TSventon (talk) 15:33, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bbb23: This archiving method is described at Help:Archiving a talk page/Details#Other procedures. The method is still allowed, as far as I know, but is "generally no longer used". Moving/renaming a page automatically moves the history to the new page name, as always. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:47, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
They haven't eliminated it - what they did was move their talk page to the archive, and then created a new page at the talk page (or, well, created a redirect and then turned that into a talk page).

    An interwiki redirect question

I recently saw Fuckloads, By the fuckload, and Fuckload, all of which are soft redirects to the Wiktionary entry for fuckload. I thought that it might be reasonable to hard redirect Fuckloads and By the fuckload to Fuckload, since that's the page whose title is closest to the Wiktionary entry. But is it acceptable to redirect soft redirects to each other? JJPMaster (she/they) 22:20, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

And the cite template read "date=20144", which (as it has not four but five digits) is several thousand years into the future. -- Hoary (talk) 06:09, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

ref number 6 is in the red too - Im sorry, I will try not do any more editing this year! Please fix this reef. Thank you in advance. Srbernadette (talk) 09:42, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Did that help? Also the year has just started. Perhaps try to do more and better editing this year. Polygnotus (talk) 09:47, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Statement: True or false?

    I think users with less than 500 edits can't be administrators. Gnu779 (talk) 13:06, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There have been cases of admins from other Wikimedia projects but very few contributions on English Wikipedia, who are promoted to adminship here to facilitate particular cross-wiki tasks.
WP:ADMINship is a position of community trust, and editors with brief tenures and few contributions have not yet had the opportunity to build that trust. Folly Mox (talk) 13:13, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So if someone was an editor with only about 100 edits, will they be or not? No, right? Gnu779 (talk) 13:17, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
See guidance at WP:RFA. The formal requirement for adminship is 500 edits and 30 days of experience. However, a user who only meets this minimum standard is almost certain not to pass an RFA. GMGtalk 13:19, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Likely copyvio ?

Fist, I wish you a very happy new year !

I hope I'm not in the wrong section. Here is the main issue :

    File:Herge with bust of Tintin.png

I wonder if this photography uploaded on en.wikipedia.org has not been made by Jacques Pavlovsky (just died in 2023) for french Sygma agency, September 18, 1975. Here other sources to evaluate this issue : https://www.gettyimages.in/detail/news-photo/belgian-cartoonist-georges-prosper-remi-aka-hergé-at-home-news-photo/1441929742

Exactly the same type of light, same time (1975), same haircut, same shirt with rolled up sleeves and same tie, same place (at home in Brussels), ...

And here, the same Tintin's bust statue in the exactly same state : https://www.gettyimages.in/detail/news-photo/belgian-cartoonist-georges-prosper-remi-aka-hergé-at-home-news-photo/583065342

Hergé was very conservative about photoshootings and it's very unlikely that any other photographer could have been worked at the same period for one of his last album of Tintin press promotion.

    Regards. Tisourcier (talk) 13:20, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Tisourcier Looking at the NFCC tags on the image, it looks like the uploader made a good-faith effort to identify the photographer but failed. I think it's plausible that Pavlovsky is the photographer, in which case the author credit for the image should be changed. However, the image would still be usable on Wikipedia, since it meets the non-free content criteria. —C.Fred (talk) 13:34, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Article name change

Hello, I am debating whether should I change the name for the former Kandara Airport into Jeddah Airport, or keep it the same. The term “Kandara Airport” was probably coined by the former airport’s location to the area, and that people didn’t want to confuse it with the newer King Abdulaziz International Airport (nicknamed Jeddah Airport). And also, before 1981 when the new one was built, the former one was officially named Jeddah Airport according to historical documents and videos. If I changed it, it would have been more historically accurate. Any thoughts? Bollardant (talk) 14:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The best place to discuss this is at Talk:Kandara Airport. When a subject has more than one possible name, it is best to get a consensus before renaming the article.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 14:57, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A notice should also be added to Talk:King Abdulaziz International Airport as Jeddah Airport redirects there. A Wikipedia:Hatnote at King Abdulaziz International Airport or a Wikipedia:Disambiguation page at Jeddah Airport are alternative options. TSventon (talk) 15:13, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    What's my actual edit count?

As of before I add this topic:

    Your impact: 371 Total edits

View all edits > User contributions for Therguy10: A user with 372 Edits.

    Am I missing something here? Thanks! Therguy10 (talk) 18:21, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There are a couple of things that impact your edit count, depending on what tools and methodology are being used. Some are based on all contributions, while others reduce your edit county by deleted edits (sometimes called "live" edits). Plus some pages are cached, for performance reasons, so their data might lag being by a few edits (or minutes)... For more information also see WP:EDITCOUNT. TiggerJay(talk) 18:37, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@TiggerjayInteresting, I'll keep that in mind. I'll probably go off of my User Contribs but that's good to know that it can differ. Thank you! Therguy10 (talk) 19:58, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Reference errors

Greetings, can someone with more stamina and time go into Hualca Hualca and resolve the reference errors? I don't know how to fix the spurious sfn error, for instance. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 18:26, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Maintenance categories

Hello, I have a few discussions (1 and 2) concerning maintenance categories that I would like to bump - WT:CATP is pretty quiet. Would there be an appropriate noticeboard to bump these discussions? The village pump and subsidiary boards seems to be for larger discussions. Tule-hog (talk) 20:00, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    1) if you want to ask what a category is for, you can just ask its creator. I pinged them for ya.
    2) looks like this topic died a natural death after Anne drew said According to the page's protection level you should be able to edit the page yourself. If you seem to be unable to, please reopen the request with further details. If you want feedback you could use Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) or WP:3O. Advice on appropriate informational/warning template

A user tagged me this afternoon on another user's talk page in the context of trying to recruit other editors to collectively undermine the work of me and a collaborator in our ongoing efforts to improve Postmodernism. Please see the comment here. (Apparently this has something to do with the off-Wiki group GSoW.[3] I'd never heard of it.)

This first editor has made only one edit to the article in question (or actually just its talk page), three years ago, with a minor question about the presence of a sidebar.

Aside from this ping (which I suspect was an accident), they have made no efforts to contact me or to offer criticism or suggestions on the article talk page.

Is there a template of some kind I could add to their user talk? Obviously some of this is just ignorance of Wikipedia culture and norms, but wow is this the wrong attitude to start with.

Thanks for your thoughts on how to handle this —

    Cheers, Patrick (talk) 21:31, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Patrick Welsh: Are there any other relevant links you know of? If not, then it seems you are overreacting and failing to AGF. It is not (yet) clear if these are nefarious people doing nefarious deeds or simply people who have a boring content dispute about a boring wikipedia article which can be solved with a boring conversation. And my money is on the second option. There is an article about @Sgerbic: over at Susan Gerbic. Polygnotus (talk) 21:39, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid not, just the post at User talk:Sgerbic. OneSkyWalker's account dates back to 2006, but it has only 107 edits that, at least at a glance, appear innocuous.
GSoW is apparently a group that coordinates offline campaigns against stuff like pseudoscience on Wikipedia. I don't know anything about them except what's on their website, and that User:Sgerbic is the founder and principle coordinator. Patrick (talk) 21:49, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Meh, my advice would be to relax and invite them to have a conversation on the talkpage. Postmodernism is not a form of pseudoscience, and you are not a psychic, so I think you have nothing to worry about. Polygnotus (talk) 21:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I will take your advice. I really don't love the battleground mentality, however, or the deliberate secrecy. I mean why not at least try starting on the article talk page? Patrick (talk) 21:56, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Some internet users expect Wikipedia to be a turnbased combat game, and it certainly can be. But there are also many articles where polite people politely disagree about topics that are not very exciting (like Postmodernism). The mention of GSoW seems to be unrelated to Postmodernism article. And, if my Google-fu is to be trusted, the GSoW secrecy is based on old unrelated drama. Nothing to worry about. Polygnotus (talk) 22:02, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be sure we're not talking past one another, I'm totally fine with editors coming to the article talk page full of objections to this-or-that shortcoming. I welcome it!
My problem here is that the editor did not do this. Instead, they went to the talk page of user who has not worked on the page seeking collaborators to edit the article in a way that they apparently expect in advance will wind up in arbitration.
Oh, and I have no problem with Susan Gerbic. I too am opposed to pseudoscience. Patrick (talk) 22:09, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. I can think of plausible non-nefarious reasons why that editor showed up at Susans talk instead of at the Postmodernism talk. I myself have also posted on a more experienced users talkpage saying something like "I think article x is imperfect what do you think" instead of posting on the talkpage of that article because I was unsure I wanted to get involved without the support of someone saner and more experienced than I am, and as a sanity check if my opinion even made sense. Something to play with

It's an AI bias checker. I'd use with extreme caution. It doesn't seem to like authoritative sources. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:57, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah that is nonsense. It is simply a wrapper around an OpenAI API call. And why oh why do they hate webdesign so much? Polygnotus (talk) 22:05, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
They are demonic (favourite word of the month) sent to try you. I don't understand it. Webdesign is an establish industry with traditions. No need for it with a well established and well understood design ethos. scope_creepTalk 22:20, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
