Government Brennen College developed out of the free school established in 1862 by Edward Brennen, a master attendant of Tellicherry Port. It was elevated to the status of a II Grade College with F.A. Classes in 1890. The institution became a I Grade College in 1947, and it was shifted to the new building at Darmadam in 1958. Government Brennen College celebrated its century in 1990. The then Vice President of India, His Excellency Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma inaugurated the centenary celebrations. Brennen College is recognized as a center of Excellence by the Government of Kerala. The University Grants Commission includes the college in 12B and 2F Categories. In 2004 September, this institution with its entire legacy and quality drive was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council at B++ Grade.

The institutional facilities in no way disturb the natural environment of the campus, as it is evident from the impressive presence of ‘Santivanam’, which is probably the only conserved pristine forest patch in a college campus in Kerala. The Green House beside the new PG Block and the Medicinal Herbs Garden in front of the Administrative Block also signify the eco-friendly culture of Brennen College.

The department was established in 1956. It has a built-up area of 1,400 square meters. There are two well-equipped laboratories with all the facilities to conduct inorganic, organic and physical chemistry experiments. The department library is very rich with 3,000 books. There are six faculty members including two guest lecturers. There are 100 students in the first year, second year and third year degree courses. The department maintains very good standard in studies and extra-curricular activities. This reflects in the excellent result in the final year examination and in the high cut off mark in the admission to first year degree course during the last few years. During the year 2005-06, Miss A. K. Deepa secured second rank in the University level, seven students got distinction mark, 20 students got first class and the overall result was 97%.

The Department of Commerce, established in November 1995, offers B.B.A (Bachelor of Business Administration). The course is three years. There is a one-day industrial visit for the first and second year students. The final year students have to undergo three weeks industrial training in reputed industries. The students prepare a project report based on their training. The students get enough opportunities for studying the Production system, Management Practices, Financial aspects and Marketing Strategy of various industrial undertakings.

This department offers courses in B.A Economics and M.A. Economics. Students in take for B.A Economics is 50 and P.G. 15. Admission to these courses is based on merit and reservation. This the department offers the Ph.D in Economics. This research center has been approved by the Kannur University. The department of History with B.A. degree course was started in 1956. M.A. course in History was introduced in 1960 and it was the first post-graduate course in the college. 180 students are in the three-year B.A course and that of two year M. A Course is 40. Of the U. G and P. G students contribute 20% belongs to SC/ST categories, Female students contribute 60% of the total strength. It is worth mentioning that the bulk of the students belong to the socially and economically backward classes.

Several students of the department have unique positions in the cultural and political realms at home and abroad and brought glories to Brennan. Sri. E. Ahmed, Hon’ble Minister of state for External Affairs and Sudhakaran, former Forest Minister of Kerala, are former students of this Department. The illustrious historian Dr. Rajan Gurukkal, the Director of School of Social Sciences, M. G University Kottayam, Dr. K. V. Kunhikrishnan, formerly registrar of Cochin University, Sri. K. P. Jayarajan, Controller of Exams Kannur University, Sri. P. K. Muhammed Ali, Dr. V. V. Kunhikrishnan, formerly Dy. Directors of Collegiate Education Dept, and Sri. K. K. Muhammed, formerly Dy. The Department of Political Science came into existence in 1956.Till 1999,the Department has been offering Political Science as a subsidiary subject to History,Economics and English Literature.Under Graduate course in Political Science started in 1999 and the student intake of the Department is 40 including marginal increase.The first batch completed their year B A course in 2002.Ever since,the Department had a brilliant record of having more than 90 percentage of pass out in the University examinations.Talented students of the Department ,with their impressive performance and attainments in the realm of arts and sports have always brought glory to the Department and College.

The department of Malayalam was established in the year 1890. This department is accredited as centre of excellence in higher education in Malayalam language and literature. Behind this reputation there is a tradition of decades when the department fostered literary taste and talent among its students and the general public through many a number of seminars, conferences and workshops in which almost all the eminent writers, critics, painters and performing artists participated.Literary figures like the Jnanpeeth laurate poet [[O.N.V. In pursuit of excellence, the Department of Mathematics started offering undergraduate degree course in Mathematics as early as 1947. It has produces thousands of scholars in this branch of knowledge, their span being spread across the globe. Renowned teachers like Prof. Jayachandran, Prof. Enasu, Prof. Ananthanarayanan, Prof. C.P. Ramanmenon and many others over the years have included many in their quest and search for truth with their matchless professional skills. After the start of the P.G. course in Mathematics in 1979, the department became more vibrant and dynamic by using the available resources optimally, catering to the needs of the society, especially the poorer and weaker sections.

The department offers B.Sc. degree course in mathematics with an intake of 40 students and M.Sc. degree course in mathematics for 15 students. All the eight regular teachers appointed by the DCE, tvm are highly qualified and professionally challenging. The library facility in the department is one of the best available in the locality with some rare books to its credit. The computer lab, meant for high-tec and learner-friendly education, is well-equipped for which a part of the assistance was rendered by the alumni association (BOSAM) of the department.

To ignite the truth searching souls and to widen their knowledge horizon the department takes all out effort by implementing time-tested tutorial session and learner-oriented curricular and co-curricular environment. The charm, warmth and the heritage of the campus combined with contemporary outlook and most modern educational technology&mdash;including EDUSAT and Inflipnet facilities&mdash;make the department unique from other competing institutions in this era, especially in Malabar.

Brennen College is an educational institution in Kerala, affiliated to the Kannur University.[1] It is located in Dharmadam, Thalassery of Kerala state, India. The college evolved from a school established by the English philanthropist Edward Brennen, master attendant of the Thalassery Port, who had made Thalassery his home. It was elevated to the status of a II Grade College with F.A. Classes in 1890 under the University of Madras. The institution became a first-grade College in 1947, and it was shifted to the new building at Darmadam in 1958.[3]
