In the 2006, 2001 and 1996 state assembly elections, Shanta Chhetri of GNLF won the Kurseong seat defeating her nearest rivals Buddhiman Rai, Independent/CPRM, in the last year, and Tulsi Bhattarai of CPI(M) in the previous two years. Contests in most years were multi-cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Nar Bahadur Chhetri, Independent, defeated Dawa Lama of CPI(M) in 1991.
