Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I've raised the question of topic ban evasion with User:Metalman59 on his/her talk page, based on recent edits of White people. While this article isn't on the topic of the Middle East or India, at least some of their edits have been within this topics, and WP:TBAN suggests that topic bans cover parts of other articles unless clearly and unambiguously stated otherwise. I'm not asking for any action, as I understand it's appropriate to discuss with the user first, but I thought, as the unblocking admin, you should be informed. I should also note that I am undecided as to whether the edits are problematic - I don't have the standing and haven't done the research to tell whether the edits are accurate, or are pushing a POV, or anything like that, though they feel as though they could be either (or even both). SamBC(talk) 13:19, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
:Just thought I should let you know (again) that the user in question, despite accepting my warnings about interpretation of topic bans, has returned to editing related areas of other articles, specifically White people. I have no idea if any action is justified or not. I simply let you know as the unblocking admin. SamBC(talk) 14:20, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Archiving
Question
Normally, I would say that it is no one's business what a person does or does not do. However, I wonder if you can provide a bit more background based on the facts in this case. You ran for the Committee, then resigned, which was fine. Then you ran a second time and won again, and in that campaign you were repeatedly asked about whether you would resign again and you strongly indicated you would not. Given this pattern, I feel justified in respectfully asking why you have been through a run-resign-run-resign sequence? —Jeff 02:00, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Hi, regarding this, does the discussion exist in an archive somewhere or do all the Requests just get deleted when they're resolved?—Biosketch (talk) 14:35, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
:He's unlikely to answer that one right now. You might save it for if he returns and runs again.--v/r - TP 02:13, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

::Thanks, TParis, but I'll answer it.
:All amendment and clarification requests that relate to a previous arbitration case are archived on the relevant case's talk page (in this case, here). <em style="font-family:Bradley Hand ITC;color:blue">Hers</em><em style="font-family:Bradley Hand ITC;color:gold">fold</em> <small>non-admin</small>(t/a/c) 01:11, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
::Jeff, I'd rather you had logged in to the account I assume you have rather ask this while hiding behind an IP address, but to answer your question, this was not planned. I had promised myself on reelection to sit through this term no matter what happened, out of respect for those who elected me if nothing else. However, at this point, being on the Committee is far too stressful for it to be practical or healthy for me to continue doing in my free time. That aside, the current incident involving Cla68 and Kevin is continuing, with several more people having been outed since Cla68's initial attempt to out Russavia. Given the increased risk of being harassed and outed inherent in arbitrator-ship, it seems likely that that net will expand to include one or more arbitrators before too much longer, if action is not taken to stop it. I value my privacy and personal safety, and have an obligation to protect my family as well.
::So yes, I have broken a campaign promise. It certainly wasn't my intention to do so, but under the circumstances I hope that the majority of the community will understand. If I do return to regular editing at some point in the future, you needn't worry; I do not believe I would run for a seat on the Committee ever again, unless some serious changes are made in how the community treats what are supposed to be among the most trusted and respected of their colleagues. <em style="font-family:Bradley Hand ITC;color:blue">Hers</em><em style="font-family:Bradley Hand ITC;color:gold">fold</em> (t/a/c) 02:15, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
:::Fair enough, thanks for the reply. I suppose the gist of this is that you seem to indicate that your family would not be safe if your real name was known. It is hard for me to imagine a situation in which that would be true. However, you started participating here with an implied promise of anonymity, and due to the good work of the people at WO and elsewhere, that is no longer a probable outcome, so that is an understandable reason to leave. Take care, —Jeff 03:07, 13 March 2013 (UTC)~
:::I sympathise, and it's deeply regrettable that vindictive individuals have driven you to this. My best wishes for your future endeavours. Prioryman (talk) 08:12, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
:::tps I agree with Prioryman here, wholeheartedly. It's disgusting, and IMHO actionable, to violate or threaten to violate the privacy of individuals who choose to edit responsibly with a pseudonym. Hersfold, I respect your decision to step back, but I hope you can find a way to keep a hand in with editing and article improvement, even if you just make a fresh start. --Lexein (talk) 14:44, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

As a candidate for the Arbitration Committee elections, please be aware that your name has been entered into the SecurePoll ballot and can no longer be removed barring the most dire of emergencies and direct manipulation of the database. While you may still withdraw from the election, your name will not be removed from the ballot, but only struck through. Hi Hersfold. I was saddened to see your resignation and was hoping to offer a few kind words before anything was done, but I see over at m:srp it's too late. Being an Arbitrator is the most difficult position one could volunteer for on Wikipedia and all you get in return is grief. This is a sad fact of the Wikipedia of today. I will say that I'm very thankful that you and other people are willing to help in this area because the alternative would be chaos. I'm sad to see it's had such a negative impact on your time here and hope that you'll try to remember some of the more pleasant experiences. As other's have said above, there are a lot of other projects under the WMF umbrella that could use an experienced person. I hope you'll consider volunteering at one of the more quiet areas. Thanks for all the help you've provided to the project over the years. Wishing you well. == A question about AC-stuff ==

*Never mind the silly hats on a volunteer internet project, I'm sorry to see you so worried and bothered. I hope that you can find some peace. That there are many, many people here who respect and admire you is easy enough to prove by flitting through some old election pages. --Dweller (talk) 13:07, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Not sure if this is best here or on your candidate question page, so feel free to move it if you see fit. This is a followup to your answer to general question 4, "ArbCom and article content". This provides an example of the sort of issue that comes up occasionally: The committee not making any binding content decision, but prescribing a method by which such a decision is to be made. What's your opinion about decisions such as this? Heimstern Läufer (talk) 02:37, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
*NB I have also thanked you for your service as a Bureaucrat here --Dweller (talk) 13:57, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

::Thanks for your clear answer. I'm not sure I can agree with you completely, but I do at least see that you've given thought and have all the right ideas in mind. I think a critical part of your reply is "... but given the fact it's at arbitration and considering the subject matter, I suppose that would be a bit too much to hope for." I think that's a very critical thing to be aware of when dealing with certain disputes (ArbMac2 had a similar issue), and do hope you will keep that in mind if you are elected to the committee. Best wishes for your candidacy! Heimstern Läufer (talk) 01:38, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

But at the same time, very understandable. I don't have answers that will save the day and stop all the active hostility to Arb com....but I am trying to find ways to help the community along with a handful of others editors. I kinda understand where the committee is coming from on a number of major issues. It has taken some time, but I believe Arb Com is too overworked, too understaffed (although a lot of editors would disagree with that, I suppose) and burned at both ends with people not trying to sort things out themselves. We simply do not have all the tools as editors to get over conflict. Should you find this interesting at all...I have started Wikipedia:WikiProject Conflict Resolution to attempt to address conduct and conflict issues that are more than simple incivility. I came here to thank you for your work on the RAN case and especially for the way you commended the parties and participants for being relatively collegial. Like Carrite I wasnt happy with the outcome, but I dont think you could have played your part any better, and much of the credit for the smooth running of the case, especially towards the end, has to go to you as drafting arb. Gutting to see you've resigned. A huge loss to the project, but I guess the time you'll free up will make this a good move for you personally, and maybe it will help the project understand how unruly the "community" is becoming. Hope you like this kitten watching over your user page while you're semi retired. FeydHuxtable (talk) 09:46, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

Pauline Kael
I appreciated your stepping in on that question about what "awai" means. I went though this him with last year, trying to find out what it meant, and got the same rude behavior, which seems to be the whole point of the (apparently invented) word, i.e., "Go away, fuck off, I have no intention of discussing this further." I was tempted to step in, even if only to offer the definition, but I couldn't see how that could possibly help, given other history between us that once got him blocked. Still, I hold no grudge and I hope you can persuade him of the benefits of collegiality and communicating respect for others. I think he's a bright guy, but I also think he has trouble seeing himself as others see him. Msnicki (talk) 02:06, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

This year, 17 times so far in December , 8 times in November, etc. Given its sole use, I cannot conclude it's simply a made up word, or simply "counting to ten". I actually knew that I was exceeding the word limit at the Kiefer/Ironholds RFAR, but according to the top of the page, I can request permission for an extended posting of evidence should the need arise &mdash; and I've done so. Would contacting one of the arbitrators be a good idea under these circumstances? I imagine that it is exceedingly rare for the arbitrators to grant somebody permission to exceed the word limit, and I doubt they will make an exception in my case, but is it worth the time to even bring this up with them? I appreciate you have rules and whatnot. I only say what I think needs to be said, both in posting it in the first place and the words used in the posting. I attempted to go back and cut material, but gave it up. Everything I posted is necessary. If you end up refactoring my comments, please include a diff with the original material. --Moni3 (talk) 18:26, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Hello Hersfold! There is a discussion that your input is requested on! I look forward to your comments, thoughts, opinions, criticisms, and questions!
:As I myself am not a clerk any more (I just run the bot), I likely won't be doing that myself, however due to the extreme amount of evidence we've received already I do plan to ask the clerks to enforce length limits fairly strictly. If you truly believe that everything you posted is necessary, and that there is no way to reasonably shorten it, we (you, the other drafters, and I) can discuss giving you an extension which the clerk bot will acknowledge. Keep in mind, though, that many diffs will speak for themselves, and tend to be preferable for us rather than paragraphs of text. I see you've only included two diffs, so adding some more may be helpful. == Implementation of Wikipedia:Bureaucrats#Bureaucrat activity requirements ==
Hi Hersfold,

You are receiving this message because you are listed at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats#Former bureaucrats. Writ Keeper pointed out that these users were not directly notified of the community discussion ending August 2015, where consensus was reached to remove the bureaucrat permissions of users who have not participated in bureaucrat activity for three years.
I hope that you're well and settling down in to the drama that is ArbCom ;).

As of 1 October 2015, any former bureaucrat who has not participated in bureaucrat activity for three years that wishes their bureaucrat permissions restored will need to request reinstatement at RFB.
I've just noticed the UTRS on the Toolserver and thought that I'd let you know that I'm happy to help with any of the testing side of things, i.e. finding the bugs that break the tool etc. I'm not so good at the coding, but I'll be sure to help you break it when it comes round to testing!

If you intend to return to bureaucrat activity, please request restoration of permissions before 1 October 2015 or three years passes since your last bureaucrat activity, whichever is later.
Best,

{{cquote|Bureaucrats are expected to exercise the duties granted by their role while remaining cognizant of relevant community standards concerning their tasks. In addition to the "Inactive bureaucrat accounts" requirements, if a bureaucrat does not participate in bureaucrat activity for over three years, their bureaucrat permissions may be removed. The user must be notified on their talk page and by email one month before the removal, and again and a few days prior to the removal. If the user does not return to bureaucrat activity, another bureaucrat may request the removal of permissions at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Permissions removed for not meeting bureaucrat activity requirements may be re-obtained through a new request for bureaucratship.

:Thanks, we'll need a number of testers! Go ahead and request an account - that part's working at least, you just won't be able to log in for a while - so when we get around to live testing I'll know to leave you a note. To assist with the implementation of this requirement, please see Wikipedia:Bureaucrat activity. Modeled after Wikipedia:Inactive administrators and similar to that process, the log page will be created on 1 September 2015. Bureaucrats who have not met the activity requirements as of that date will be notified by email (where possible) and on their talk page to advise of the pending removal.
ArbComBot bug
If the notified user does not return to bureaucrat activity and the permissions are removed, they will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFB. Removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon the affected user in any way.
This may already be a known issue, but I have noticed that when a level two heading has a link in it, the bot skips the section and does not add the word count and diff count. I've worked around it by removing the link. Regards --Alexandr Dmitri (talk) 13:51, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I have filed a Request for clarification of Remedy 2.2 of WP:ARBRAN, concerning a topic ban placed on User:Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ). My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Wikipedia editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Wikipedia. As a member of BAG and an active member of the bot community, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). I am completely flexible and can work with your schedule. The interview will take approximately 30-45 minutes.

Speedy deletion nomination of :Template:Tltt2
A tag has been placed on :Template:Tltt2 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.
I'm afraid that Metalman59 is at it again. Having stated he understood that he shouldn't edit because of his topic ban, he joined discussion on the talk page at Talk:White people. General opinion was against him, and some elements were removed that he had either added, or added to. He backed down. He then seems to have waited a while for attention to die down, and added those section back to White people. I've told him on his talk page that I don't believe this is acceptable, and that I will be drawing admin attention to the situation. I figured that you know the case history, so I should start with you. If I should go somewhere else or seek help more broadly, please let me know. SamBC(talk) 13:07, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes.
:I'd have granted him some leniency given that this edit took place 10 days ago, however he's either lying about making that edit or his account is compromised. I've blocked his account indefinitely. Sorry to bother you, but in case you haven't seen it there's a lot of complaints here that it's now well past the Proposed Decision date and nobody has made any kind of announcement, even to say "there will be a delay, the new expected date is...". This isn't fair on anyone involved, as nobody can start work on anything until they know what the likely decision will be since nobody knows who's likely to end up blocked or under some kind of sanction. I appreciate that you don't want to rush the decision, but is there any chance someone involved in the case can post an update as to when a decision is likely to be made? At the moment, the closest thing there is to any kind of response from the Arbitration Committee is a sarcastic comment ("since when is a target a promise?").78.146.193.88 (talk) 21:43, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Question

[edit]

Normally, I would say that it is no one's business what a person does or does not do. However, I wonder if you can provide a bit more background based on the facts in this case. You ran for the Committee, then resigned, which was fine. Then you ran a second time and won again, and in that campaign you were repeatedly asked about whether you would resign again and you strongly indicated you would not. Given this pattern, I feel justified in respectfully asking why you have been through a run-resign-run-resign sequence? —Jeff 02:00, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

He's unlikely to answer that one right now. You might save it for if he returns and runs again.--v/r - TP 02:13, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, TParis, but I'll answer it.
Jeff, I'd rather you had logged in to the account I assume you have rather ask this while hiding behind an IP address, but to answer your question, this was not planned.
So yes, I have broken a campaign promise. Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:15, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, thanks for the reply.
I sympathise, and it's deeply regrettable that vindictive individuals have driven you to this. My best wishes for your future endeavours. Prioryman (talk) 08:12, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's disgusting, and IMHO actionable, to violate or threaten to violate the privacy of individuals who choose to edit responsibly with a pseudonym. Wishing you the best

[edit]

64.40.54.205 (talk) 10:24, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

 • Never mind the silly hats on a volunteer internet project, I'm sorry to see you so worried and bothered. I hope that you can find some peace. That there are many, many people here who respect and admire you is easy enough to prove by flitting through some old election pages. --Dweller (talk) 13:07, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Draw dropping

[edit]

Take some time to take a little break, experiance friends and family and if you would like, join us there if you wish.--Amadscientist (talk) 06:15, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

For all of your hard work here, especially as an ArbCom member. The treatment which many Arbs (especially you) have been accorded is disgraceful and I rather wish the entire committee would resign and let all the naysayers try to run things. [edit]

FeydHuxtable (talk) 09:46, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re. Your bot's automated message on my talk page

[edit]

I actually knew that I was exceeding the word limit at the Kiefer/Ironholds RFAR, but according to the top of the page, I can request permission for an extended posting of evidence should the need arise — and I've done so. Would contacting one of the arbitrators be a good idea under these circumstances? I imagine that it is exceedingly rare for the arbitrators to grant somebody permission to exceed the word limit, and I doubt they will make an exception in my case, but is it worth the time to even bring this up with them? FYI it also looks like ManualTranswiki is also listed in the same entry for the same reason. I'm pretty sure you are still inactive, but just in case I wanted to let you know about the 2nd template. Cheers. ~ PaulT+/C 21:44, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Template:Tltt2 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. —andrybak (talk) 20:00, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Special:WantedTemplates

[edit]

Hi, I have been cleaning up Special:WantedTemplates and noticed that Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:"_+_"oldafdfull"_+_" is pointing to your AFDcloser.js pages. clearly these are false positives (basically a bug in how WP parses .js pages). it would be really great if you could add
// <syntaxhighlight lang=javascript> to the top and
// </syntaxhighlight> to the bottom of those pages. by putting these tags in comments, it won't prevent the javascript from executing, but it will remove those pages from Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:"_+_"oldafdfull"_+_". thank you in advance for your help. Frietjes (talk) 20:06, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hersfold hasn't been on in years. If you think a change should be made and you are sure it won't break, you should just make the change.--v/r - TP 00:07, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The page has Lint errors because it uses the obsolete <center>...</center> and <font>...</font> html tags. It is in this part -

<center><font size="6">What are you doing here?</font></center>

To get the same display without error, replace it with <div style="text-align:center; font-size:xx-large;">What are you doing here?</div>
