It may be worthwhile to temper the claims of romanisation during the 2nd century with the (I think very astute) views of Mouritsen ''Italian unification'' (BICS, 1998). Romanisation's actual completion during the empire biased sources towards retrojection; the [[Social War (91–87 BC)|Social War]] should not be seen so blithely as a war merely to enfranchise the allies; there was a real revolt against Roman rule underneath the imperial age sources. Early romanisation vs late
[edit]It may be worthwhile to temper the claims of romanisation during the 2nd century with the (I think very astute) views of Mouritsen Italian unification (BICS, 1998). Romanisation's actual completion during the empire biased sources towards retrojection; the Social War should not be seen so blithely as a war merely to enfranchise the allies; there was a real revolt against Roman rule underneath the imperial age sources.
