:I can tell you which Devanagari character matches which sound in English words, to the best that that can be done. But I can't be much more help than that currently. I might find some time to study the relevant works soon, perhaps, then, I could offer more. However, it looks like IPA/Sanskrit already does a pretty fine job (in offering what I could offer). Nepali is substantially (perhaps completely) identical to Sanskrit, both phonetically and in script. I removed the following from the "Number of speakers" section:
Excellent question. They are different languages despite the potential confusion: Nepali vs. Nepal Bhasa.
:Since the late 1980s, over 100,000 Lhotshampas have been forced out of Bhutan, accused by the government of being illegal immigrants.<ref name=USDOS/> A large portion of them were expelled in an ethnic cleansing, and are now being resettled to various first world countries from their refuge in eastern Nepal.{{fact|date=July 2019}}

Nepali is an indo-european language originally spoken in far western Nepal by Khas peoples who gradually migrated eastward and became militarily and political dominant, and Nepali became the national language although it is a second language for about half the population.

Nepal Bhasa, more commonly called Newari is the Tibeto-Burman language spoken by the Newar nationality that is indigenous to the Kathmandu Valley. "Nepal" originally meant just the Kathmandu valley with its three ancient cities (originally kingdoms) Kathmandu on the west, Patan on the south, and Bhaktapur on the east, to which one might add a smaller city or town Banepa further east on the rim of the valley.

== NEARLY HALF OF MALAYALAM WORDS ARE NEPALESE LOAN WORDS ==
Newars were farmers, craftsmen and merchants. As merchants they controlled trans-himalayan trade with Lhasa (the capital of Tibet) and have developed bazaars throughout the Middle Hills. However their language is not spoken by other ethnic groups or widely taught and is perhaps in some danger of disappearing.

Until 19th century the vernacular language of indigenous Dravidian people of Kerala was Malayanma which was devoid of Nepalese words but had few Sanskrit words. Philipose Rambans Bible was the last Malayanma book printed in 1811 AD.
After 1815 British missionaries changed policy and started promoting the Grantha Malayalam exclusively used by Nambuthiris and some Nairs, then used by less than 5% of the population. Church Mission Society Kottayam and the British Missionary Benjamin Bailey and German missionary Herman Gundert were instrumental in the promotion of Nepalese colloquial words as Sanskrit. More than 3000 Nepalese words were added to Malayalam, a Dravidian language.
The place origin of these words is Ahichatra, capital of ancient from where Kadamba king Mayura Varma brought Aryan Brahmins and Naga warriors to Karnataka and settled them in Tulunad in 345 AD. Banapperumal a Tulu prince from Alupas Kingdom invaded Kerala in 1120 AD with a 350000 strong Nair army.
After the invasion of Malik Kafur in 1311 AD all the Tamil Kingdoms cane to an end. The Matriarchal kingdoms which followed after 1340 AD had this Tulu-Nepalese heritage.
In the 19th century Malayanma was deliberately mixed with these Nepalese words. The resultant language was popularised as Puthu Malayalam.

New IPA help page for Nepali language

[edit]

Hi everyone, I just thought I'd mention I've recently created an IPA help page (Help:IPA/Nepali) for the Nepali language because there were a few Wikipedia pages with IPA's for the Nepali language and I believed a separate page would be more useful. However, I would request anyone fluent in the language or who is a linguist to please check it and if necessary, correct any mistake present as I don't speak the language myself and had to do a lot of research on the alphabet and phonetic sounds. Thank you. Broman178 (talk) 09:09, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I can tell you which Devanagari character matches which sound in English words, to the best that that can be done. So, IPA/Nepali should be expected to agree with IPA/Sanskrit at least 80% of the time, assuming both pages have some errors. My thanks for your efforts! I removed the following from the "Number of speakers" section:

Since the late 1980s, over 100,000 Lhotshampas have been forced out of Bhutan, accused by the government of being illegal immigrants.[1] A large portion of them were expelled in an ethnic cleansing, and are now being resettled to various first world countries from their refuge in eastern Nepal.[citation needed]
