Naboomspruit was originally named for the profusion of euphorbia trees (known in Afrikaans as naboom) growing on the banks of a nearby stream (spruit, in Afrikaans). The town was officially renamed Mookgophong on the 24 November 2006, by the South African government . |

According to the 2007 community Survey conducted by Statistics South Africa, the population of the greater Mookgopong Local Municipality, which incorporates Naboomspruit, is 16,820, of which 78.0% are Black African, 21.3% white,0.6% Asian and 0,1 Coloured. The white population is likely to have been undercounted , a common problem with the countings. |
