Manika (pronounced Ma-NEE-ka) was discovered by Frank DiLeo, Michael Jackson's long-time manager. At that time, Manika— still a junior in high school— crammed her junior year and senior into one, graduated valedictorian, and three months later moved from her hometown Las Vegas to Hollywood. Manika's musical career quickly blossomed— she was soon approached by A-list producers, songwriters and choreographers (such as Soulshock, Qura Rankin, Kizzo, E. Kidd Bogart, Kasia Livingston, Travis Payne, and Tanisha Scott). That summer Manika headlined Pepsi's Shopt Til You Rock Tour. She then continued to tour and perform at events across the U.S. (such as the Hollywood Style Awards, nationally televised Hollywood Christmas Parade, Girl Scouts 100th Year Anniversary Tour). Manika's break-though EP "The Middle of Hollywood" is based on her experiences of moving out to Hollywood by herself at only 17-years old. Less than a year later, Manika was performing at sold-out arenas in over 20 cities with the most popular boy-band in the world— One Direction. |

Prior to her musical success, at age 15 Manika wrote and published The Exciting Adventures of Boo, a fictional children’s book and donated all the proceeds from the first 750 copies to the ASPCA animal shelter. Manika also participated in writing workshops for children and visited children’s hospitals to read her book to young cancer patients and their families. These activities are just the beginning of the many philanthropic goals that Manika intends to pursue. |

Manika brings intelligence, wit and tons of emotional life experiences to her songs. "I’ve always loved both writing and songwriting," she says, "The journey is fascinating to me. When I watch a live performance back on video, I think about how everything started from a simple emotion, feeling or story I wanted to tell. The next step is to play with song ideas, and then lay down instruments and vocals. Then it all takes shape and suddenly that simple spark has blossomed into something huge and powerful that people can enjoy.” |

Early life and education
[edit]Manika was born in Las Vegas to Grace Ward and Wallace Ward [11] in 1993.[12] She described herself in 2011 interview with Las Vegas Review-Journal as "part Filipino, part Japanese, part Chinese, part Malaysian and part Spanish".[8][13]
As a child, she taught herself to play the piano and guitar.[8] Aged 17, Manika graduated as valedictorian[14] from Henderson International School in Henderson, Nevada.[15] At 15, she also wrote a book, The Exciting Adventures of Boo and donated proceeds to the ASPCA Animal Shelter.[8][9]
Career
[edit]Aged 17, music executive Frank DiLeo noticed her after she received several awards at New York City's National Performing Arts Festival.[12] Under DiLeo's supervision, she released several singles. In 2009, she published "Boyz R Dumb". In 2011 she collaborated with rapper Lil Twist on "Just Can't Let You Go".[12] Also in 2011, she worked with music coach CeCe Sammy, whom she met through a shared friend.[8]
Her manager DiLeo died in 2011 after cardiac surgery.[12] In 2012 she toured with One Direction across North America as their opening act.[16] In 2012 Manika also performed at KIIS-FM's Wango Tango. In 2014, Manika released her fourth single "Vegas Party". She performed this song at Las Vegas nightclubs including Hakkasan nightclub at MGM Grand and Light nightclub at Mandalay Bay.[16][17][18] Manika's fifth single was released in 2015 "B.Y.O.Bugatti", which peaked at number 12 on the U.S. Hot Single Sales Chart by Billboard.[19][20] In 2015, Manika also performed on the main stage at the Wine Amplified music festival in Las Vegas.[21][22]
Later that year she released a collaboration with rapper Tyga, "I Might Go Lesbian", which peaked at number 15 on the Billboard U.S. Hot Single Sales Chart.[23][24] The title of the song has been retroactively changed, first to "I Might Go..." and later to "I Might Go (love a) Lesbian".
