Show hidden categories in red

The list of categories looks the same. It is only after the user adds one that doesn't show up after being added, that one discovers he added a hidden category (shown elsewhere on the page)! Jidanni (talk) 04:06, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can't disable HotCat

Vladimir1371, the categories are part of the regular interface of Wikipedia (powered by MediaWiki). All readers see the categorization at the bottom of all pages. Does that answer your question? —⁠andrybak (talk) 09:54, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HotCat is not working for me

Disregard

Bulk cat additions

Could somebody please explain how to add Category:Companies in the S&P 400 to all the pages in Template:S&P 400 companies ? 92.71.60.61 (talk) 12:33, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's simply placed in the transcludable (outside the noinclude tags) text of the template as stated at WP:TCAT; which also discourages using templates to categorize in this way. Note this would only work for the articles that already have the navbox to begin with, and I've found at least one where that's not the case.

Later today, I would be happy to just go ahead add the category (and the template) to any that don't already have it. Shouldn't really take me that long. --DB1729^talk 13:34, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JFYI, for semi-automatic addition of a single category to a multitude of pages, the best fit is the Cat-a-lot tool, not HotCat. For trickier cases (e.g. adding a category and a template), there is WP:AWB and WP:JWB. —⁠andrybak (talk) 13:58, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! Thank you so much. I spent about a week creating the category, a further week creating the template, and a further 2 weeks adding it to (almost) all the pages. hehe. You're welcome. Glad to help out. I had figured it would take a little over an hour to maybe 90 minutes at most, but the Wikimedia servers went out twice during my session (I don't think my speed overloaded it:) I actually felt I was taking my time). (All good now!) Encountered a bug in eswiki

Hello! I'm coming from eswiki, where I use HotCat a lot. I use it too in enwiki, but the problem I found happened in eswiki. As you can see in my countributions, I've been using HotCat a lot these past two days, and in two of those times, the tool also deleted a lot of content from the page I was modifying the categories of. In this case, this and this edit.

I thought it was my fault and I somehow messed up with the keyboard, but then I tried again in the first case and the same number of bytes was deleted. And if you look closely in the second example, there seems to be a new category added which is empty, this one: '[[Categoría:]]'

I tried going back to a previous edit, but even then, the text missing wouldn't show up, so I had to ask someone else to undo my edits. I don't know what could be happening. One of those changes was modifying an already existing category and the other was adding new categories to an article.

Hello again, I've been trying to find what was going on the whole day and I managed to find a firefox extension that was somehow affecting the text that appeared on the edit text box when clicking on "edit" or when changing multiple categories with HotCat.

-Would there be a practical way to make HotCat place categories before stub tags rather than after, as prescribed at [[WP:STUB]]? This may only be a problem for uncategorized pages. I came across it when placing a category on an uncategorized stub, and I had to manually put the category tag in the right place. I am still using F28, and I haven't upgraded my plugins, through some like NoScript do autoupdate a lot. Any idea what may be responsible? After reading [[User:Technical 13|Technical 13]]'s first comment, I looked at the pages in [[:Category:AfC submissions with categories]] before letting BattyBot change them to category links, and noticed that none of the pages had the categories added by HotCat.  I agree with [[User:Redrose64|Redrose64]] that changing them to category links is more beneficial for the editor than removing them completely. I do agree the first step should be a modification that takes hotcat away from editors in those namespaces that aren't at least autoconfirmed.  I don't care if this is done in the script itself or in the gadget definition, but will need to know how the community would like to handle it before I suggest possible code to do it that way.
