Biomimicry is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies. Since living organisms, through natural selection, is a result of millions of years of evolution, by imitating natural living structures, biomimicry can help solve complex human problems such as creating effective human structures capable to optimize their performance and the use of natural resources.

Following are the green buildings that Nati has designed as architect of IDC:
One early example of the use of biomimicry is Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) who studied birds to enable human flight and create a “flying machine”. The Wright Brothers in 1903 also derived inspiration for their aircraft invention by studying pigeons in flight.

At the onset of the design process is a detailed analysis of the existing data of natural weather conditions of the site location, optimizing the use of natural elements to shape the design of the building—the same “thinking model” used by nature. In the same manner that a sailboat is designed to take advantage of the wind and waves, Nati espouses the idea that a building should adhere to the same concept, by optimizing the natural elements to create an efficient and high performing building design.

At 16 years old, Nati's interest in architecture grew when he flew to Hong Kong, New York City, Chicago, Singapore and other major cities following his father who used to work in ALITALIA (Italian Airlines). His early travels developed his interest in modern architecture, instilling a great admiration for skyscrapers. Influenced by Leonardo da Vinci and biomimicry, he also continued developing his architectural style from his appreciation of the elegant and highly-effective function of nature. Romolo Valentino Benedetto Nati (born February 14, 1968) is an Italian architect and entrepreneur who employs biomimicry to create sustainable real estate and energy projects.[1][2] He is the Executive Chairman and CEO of Italpinas Development Corporation (IDC),[3] a publicly listed real estate development firm in the Philippines.[4] He is also the Vice Chairman of Constellation Energy Corporation (CEC), a Philippine renewable energy company.[5]

Career

[edit]

Italpinas Development Corporation

[edit]

In 2007, Nati came to the Philippines and introduced "green architecture".[6] In 2009, Nati and Jose D. Leviste III,[7] founded the Italpinas Euroasian Design and Eco-development Corporation (ITPI). Leviste is a Sydney-based Filipino lawyer.

ITPI was later renamed Italpinas Development Corporation (IDC), with Nati as Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and Leviste as President. The first project of the IDC is Primavera Residences[8][9][10] in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. Primavera is a mixed-use condominium inside Pueblo de Oro Business Park.[11]

Constellation Energy Corporation

[edit]

Nati is also Vice Chairman of Constellation Energy Corporation (CEC). Established in 2009, CEC is a Philippine renewable energy company that provides sustainable solutions to business firms and consumers.[12][13]

Education

[edit]

Born in Rome, Italy, Nati first studied automotive design. Later, he pursued architecture, and earned a bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, in Architecture and Design at Sapienza Universita di Roma, where he served as faculty member for sometime. A few years later, he received his master's degree in Urban Landscape and Layers at the University of Tallinn in Estonia.[14] Nati also earned a Master's degree in Business Administration from Asian Institute of Management (AIM).[15]

Style

[edit]

Inspired by biomimicry,[16] Nati considers natural conditions and sustainable energy in designing his buildings. He shapes every building so that it acts like a sailboat: The sailboat catches the wind, not fight against it.

Nati believes that shelters and entire cities should be constructed without harming nature.[17] He also explains that buildings can be made to withstand severe weather. In response to the damage caused by typhoon Yolanda to the Philippines, Nati said, “Buildings and cities can be planned, designed and developed to minimize and in some cases avoid damage created by 20-foot storm surges and other extreme conditions."[18]

Buildings

[edit]

Following are the green buildings that Nati has designed as architect of IDC:

 • Primavera Residences (Pueblo de Oro, Cagayan de Oro City) [19]
 • Primavera City (Pueblo de Oro, Cagayan de Oro City) [20]
 • Miramonti Green Residences I (Santo Tomas, Batangas) [21]
 • Miramonti Green Residences II (Santo Tomas, Batangas) [22]
 • Verona Green Residences (Uptown Cagayan de Oro City)
 • Verona Green Residences (Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City)
 • Firenze Green Tower (Limketkai Drive, Cagayan de Oro City)
 • Moena Mountain Estate Residences (Dahilayan, Bukidnon) [23]
 • Baia Verde Green Estate (Morong, Bataan) [24]
