Etxenike studied law and after a brief period working as a lawyer, she left the legal profession to devote herself full-time to writing and teaching. She regularly teaches courses on gender studies and narrative theory at the [[University of the Basque Country]] and at prominent universities worldwide: [[Columbia University]], [[University of Wisconsin-Green Bay]], [[University of East Anglia]]. She is a frequent guest lecturer at several American and Australian universities including [[Dartmouth College]], [[Emory University]], [[La Trobe University]], [[University of New South Wales]], and [[Flinders University]].
She has published several novels, short story collections, plays and a poetry collection. Luisa Etxenike (born 10 July 1957, San Sebastián, Spain) is an author from the Basque Country.[1] She is a recipient of the Premio Euskadi de Literatura and the Medalla al Mérito Ciudadano.

Biography

She has published several novels, short story collections, plays and a poetry collection. She had a weekly column on culture and politics in the Spanish newspaper, El País.[2] Fluent in Spanish, French and English, she has translated the works of several French authors, including the filmmaker Claude Lanzmann[3]

Etxenike organises local writing workshops,[4][5] and has directed an annual women's literary festival in San Sebastián, Un mundo de escritoras[6] since 1987,(formally known as Encuentro de escritoras),[7] and is the founder and director of the online cultural platform, Canal Europa.[8]

In 2009, Etxenike received the Basque literary award ''Premio Euskadi de Literatura''[9] for her novel El ángulo ciego.[10] In 2013, she was awarded the Medalla al Mérito Ciudadano,[11] (Medal for Exemplary Citizenship) from the City of San Sebastián.
