== Duplicative text on [[Help:Disambiguation]]? ==
== Recent Contribution Question ==

Hi. I think there is a superfluous paragraph at the end of [[Help:Disambiguation]]. I added [[Help Talk:Disambiguation#Duplicative_text_on_this_page?|this topic]] to the Talk page asking about it. The automated help text told me that this particular Talk page is "not watched by many users" and suggested asking my question here. So: Is there a superfluous paragraph at the end of [[Help:Disambiguation]]? If the last two paragraphs say the same thing, one should be eliminated; if not, one or both should be rewritten to clarify the point each is trying to make. I recently made a contribution to Wikipedia involving a biography of a person. For some reason it reads that the article is written like an advertisement. What can I do to fix this? Should I delete some of the references I used? <!-- Template:Unsigned --><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[User:Max266|Max266]] ([[User talk:Max266#top|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/Max266|contribs]]) 00:16, 6 December 2019 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Content such as {{tqqi|From the time she was ten years old, Barbie Castro became interested in everything that had to do with entertainment. Ar article should be [[WP:NPOV|neutral]] and factual. It should not offer opinions or judgements in Wikipedia's voice, although it may report the opinions of named and cited individuals, within reason and allowing for [[WP:DUE|due weight]]. You also need to avoid copying any significant text from outside sources, unless they are marked as quotes and comply with [[Wikipedia:Quotations]]. Such copying can be grounds for deleting the article totally and without warning or discussion. == Assistance Required for Published Article Not Going Live ==
Hello.

Dear Wikipedia Help Desk,
Thank you for letting me know what the problem is. Just out of curiosity, how much time do I have to fix this article Barbie Castro? I want to fix it so it doesn't get deleted. <!-- Template:Unsigned --><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[User:Max266|Max266]] ([[User talk:Max266#top|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/Max266|contribs]]) 01:32, 6 December 2019 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->
:There is no specific deadline, {{U|Max266}}. No editor has yet nominated the article for deletion, nor tagged it for speedy deletion. If nominated for a [[WP:AfD|deletion discussion]] the discussion normally lasts at least 7 days. If tagged for speedy deletion, an admin reviews the article, perhaps only minutes later. If the admin agrees, the page is deleted with no discussion. You should be notified, but there is no delay. Personally I don't think this is sufficiently promotional to qualify for speedy deletion (or else I would have deleted it or tagged it) but that is a judgement call, and some editors are more aggressive on that subject than I. I have removed some of the most clearly promotional language, but you should go through it more thoroughly as soon as you can. I would like to understand the status of this article and whether there are any additional steps or issues preventing it from being moved to the live Wikipedia space. Your guidance on resolving this matter would be greatly appreciated.
How do you stop someone with the right to ban you from editing your changes and threatening to ban you because they don’t agree with the way something is written due to their political bias? <!-- Template:Unsigned --><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[User:WestSideHudson|WestSideHudson]] ([[User talk:WestSideHudson#top|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/WestSideHudson|contribs]]) 01:00, 6 December 2019 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->
:I am sorry, but edits like [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Jeannie_Suk&diff=prev&oldid=929463603 this] (which you repeated after it was reverted) and [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Viola_Canales&diff=prev&oldid=929462417 this] are totally unacceptable, and repeating such edits will justifiably lead to a block from editing. Do not repeat them. Do you really need to be told why they are not acceptable? They state highly [[WP:NPOV|non-neutral]] opinions, are attacks on named individuals, and are unsourced. :Hello, @[[User:DisplayEcosystem|DisplayEcosystem]].
:Editors who try to create an article before they have spent significant time learning how Wikipedia works often have a disappointing and frustrating task, because they have no idea what it takes to create a Wikipedia article. It's like trying to build a house when you have no knowledge of surveying, building, plumbing, electrical installation, etc. And it's even harder when you have a [[WP:conflict of interest|conflict of interest]].
:{{User:ColinFine/PractiseFirst}}
:Be aware that Wikipedia is basically not interested at all in what you know (whoever you are) or in what the subject of the article (or their associates) say or want to say. A Wikipedia article should be a summary of what people wholly unconnected with the subject have chosen to publish about the subject, and very little else. ''First'' find your sources (and make sure they are independent: see [[WP:42]]) ''then'' forget everything you know about the subject, and write a summary of what those sources say. :{{Re|Theurgist}} I haven't been able to solve this. There's another example at [[UEFA Euro 2020 bids#Bidding venues]], where Jerusalem is positioned on the coast rather than inland. :It is not 'points'; it is the number of bytes added or removed with that edit. The number of bytes is roughly the same as the number of characters in the edit, but not exactly. [[User:331dot|331dot]] ([[User talk:331dot|talk]]) 13:56, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
:: It's the number of bytes that changed in the article. For instance, if you change "Ford" to "Reagan", you'll get +2. == Pending Changes duration ==
:Hello, IP user. When somebody does not create and login to an account (like you), there is no way to contact them except by the IP address they were using: in this case 77.69.211.63. Unfortunately, many IP addresses are not fixed: even if you are using the same computer on the same network as last week, your network may have allocated you a different IP address. Conversely, somebody using the same or a different computer (but probably on the same network) in August was allocated the same IP address as you are using now. So that message was indeed not aimed at you, but there is no way to track down the person who made those edits in August. This is one of the reasons for creating an account: you will only get the messages intended for you. --[[User:ColinFine|ColinFine]] ([[User talk:ColinFine|talk]]) 16:59, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

== GENRE missing from table of American films ==

== Newly created article with another title ==
Hello, DAC8190 here, about 6 months ago I commented to someone about the fact that the GENRE column had been removed from the List_of_American_films_of_2019. Shortly after that post (not sure how to find it again?!) it was restored.

I recently created ''[[Flamingo Boy]]'', a 2018 British children's novel written by [[Michael Morpurgo]]. A year later it was published in the states by Macmillan Publishing under the title [[The Day the World Stopped Turning]], which is currently a redirect to [[Music Played by Humans]], due to a single on that album having that name. However, the top search result from Google for "The Day the World Stopped Turning" is from Amazon books (Michael Morpurgo), and the fourth and fifth search results on the first page from Google are from Macmillan Publishing and [[GoodReads]] for the book. The single from the album is listed as the eight search result. I wanted to create a redirect for the American book title, but I don't just want to hijack that redirect page. Any advice on what to do, if anything, or should I just not worry about it. Thanks.[[User:Isaidnoway|<b style="font-family:Times New Roman; color:blue"> ''Isaidnoway'' </b>]][[User talk:Isaidnoway|<b style="font-family:Times New Roman; color:#03B54F">''(talk)''</b>]] 10:00, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

The topmost image in the [[Donald Trump]] article on the left is of him in his military academy jacket from youth on the left side, however, the image is printing out in a section below the one where it has been edited into the article. == I don't understand the point of [[MOS:CITELEAD]] ==
Well, um. Nothing in books, and in a newspaper, it said a dude died from the middle school, I have knowledge of it. Is it okay to make it or no? It's not that well known. [[User:New3400|New3400]] ([[User talk:New3400|talk]]) 23:02, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

The reason why I don't understand the point of [[MOS:CITELEAD]], is because it's supposed to act as a guideline to not use citations in the lead if the information they would like to source is not mentioned in the body. It says on the article, "Because the lead usually repeats information that is in the body, editors should balance the desire to avoid redundant citations in the lead with the desire to aid readers in locating sources for challengeable material." What I see is editors, including myself (I have just realised as going over the guideline), they put into the lead what was not mentioned in the body. For example, copyediting from another article and or from an infobox if on the page. Most editors don't know this and just add whatever. We all want editors to follow Wikipedia's guidelines, right? So maybe the administrators should maybe do something or someone of a higher rank should do something about this guideline? [[User:FeistyRooster|FeistyRooster]] ([[User talk:FeistyRooster|talk]]) 22:50, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
:If you can find enough information about the school in [[WP:RS|reliably published sources]], independent of the school, to establish [[WP:notability|notability]], then by all means, create a draft using the [[WP:article wizard|article wizard]], {{U|New3400}} (I really don't advise trying to create an article directly in main space). If you can't find enough information, then you will be wasting your time trying. The fact that somebody died ''probably'' isn't enough to make it notable, though it could be. --[[User:ColinFine|ColinFine]] ([[User talk:ColinFine|talk]]) 00:00, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

:Your first sentence seems to be backwards: if the source is not mentioned in the body , it ''should'' be cited in the lead. But as I understand it, there should not normally be any information in the lead which is not in the body (forther up the same page: "Apart from basic facts, significant information should not appear in the lead if it is not covered in the remainder of the article.")
Would the website from the school board count? It is neutral.[[User:New3400|New3400]] ([[User talk:New3400|talk]]) 02:17, 7 December 2019 (UTC)
:As to your last sentence: there is no "someone of a higher rank", and admins as admins have no part in setting policy (though they may be called upon to perform administrative tasks like closing discussion). If you want to open a discussion, you're as qualified to do so as anybody - either at the talk page of the relevant guideline, or at one of the departments of the [[WP:village pump|village pump]]. [[User:ColinFine|ColinFine]] ([[User talk:ColinFine|talk]]) 23:04, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
:The specific guidelines are here: [[Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies)#Schools]] -- which essentially states that schools are treated the same as other types of organizations as far as notability is concerned. The school board website would be okay as a source of information, but (most likely) not sufficient to provide notability. It is certainly okay to ''try'' submitting an article -- but don't take it personally if your submission is declined . == Citation format for interviews - citing interviewer ==
== How to create a newsletter ==

Hi all -- quick question about citation/quote formatting. Appreciate any insights!
Hi friends,

I'm using an interview of a subject of an article ([[Sam Gilliam]]) as a citation for a fact about an exhibition Gilliam held in New York in 1968. I am ''not'' using one of Gilliam's answers in the interview as the source for this detail, but rather one of the interviewer's statements. The interviewer gives details about a work from that 1968 exhibition. Is there a way to properly format an interview citation to show that I'm citing the interviewer rather than the subject, and is it in general OK to use an interview source like this, with the interviewer as the actual source of the information? And relatedly, would it be "correct" to include a bracketed statement of who is speaking if I were to include a quote from the source in the citation? Here's what I'm looking to cite/how I think it would be formatted (quote would probably be shorter), as both a long citation and harvp with a quote:
I like to create a newsletter for my WikiProject so contributors can subscribe, how do I do it?
The [[:mw:Extension:Newsletter]] and [[:mw:Extension:MassMessage]] seems not enabled in EN or META.

Consider the sentence {{tpq|the plot was influenced by H. P. Lovecraft's work.}} On [[The Staff of Karnath]] it was originally linked as {{tpq|<nowiki>[[H. P. Lovecraft]]'s</nowiki>}} and I recently changed it to {{tpq|<nowiki>[[H. P. Lovecraft|H. P. Lovecraft's]]</nowiki>}} in order to encompass the {{tpq|'s}} into the link, as I think the entire word should be linked, rather than leave unsightly (IMO) hanging non-linked text on the end of a bluelink.
== My correction to calories in Honey page was reverted to wrong info ==

User [[User talk:Rhain|Rhain]] reverted, saying that this shouldn't be done, the apostrophe is not to be linked. I've looked in as many MOS and Help articles as I can, and this doesn't seem to be covered. Plenty of pipe help, but nothing that covers apostrophes being included in a link or not. Both our arguments are based on the same premise - Rhain believes the link to be better and simpler to directly link to "H. P. Lovecraft" which is simpler from a source point of view, but I think it's better to pipe and make the visual aspect better for the reader, as covered by [[Wikipedia:Linking dos and don'ts]] - {{tpq|Use piping to fit link text into prose}}. I think that precedent has been set for appending text to the link in that Wiki already does this - appending any regular text onto the end of a link automatically bluelinks the entire [[cheese]]s text even though the link is for [[cheese]] singular, just with an "s" on the end. This doesn't work for apostrophes, so a manual method can be used instead. [[User:Chaheel Riens|Chaheel Riens]] ([[User talk:Chaheel Riens|talk]]) 13:57, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
I was researching sugars (proportions glucose, fructose, etc.) in various sweeteners and I noticed that contrary to other sources the Wikipedia Honey page stated 46 calories per TB. Further it was footnoted to a reference-- which I visited-- wherein it shows 63.8 kcal per TB. I assumed the wiki page showed a transcription error having reversed 64 to 46. I edited to show 64. I did not footnote my change, as the footnote in place goes to data that substantiates the changed data.

To clarify - should it be needed - I think the sentence "the [[cheese]]s were [[Richard Cheese]]'s" is better presented as "the [[cheese]]s were [[Richard Cheese|Richard Cheese's]]" for the reader. [[User:Chaheel Riens|Chaheel Riens]] ([[User talk:Chaheel Riens|talk]]) 14:11, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

== Naming vs. Consistency & Constant updates ==

Hi, I'm going to lump 2 questions in here, there's probably no complete consensus, but if someone can help summarise best practice (and point to any policies/guidelines that clearly answer them, I may have missed something).
*I saw a move request at [[Talk:Pedro_Carlos_of_Orl%C3%A9ans-Braganza]] and found [[WP:NCNT]] which isn't ''too'' clear about royal families that have no kingdom anymore (Brazil would be an empire, and 'prince' wouldn't be the [[monarch]], although 'prince imperial' would). The problem is that we now have various articles about the family titled prince so and so (compounded by the fact there appear to be two different branches) whilst others (per [[WP:COMMONNAME]]) don't use 'prince'. A sub-question is if there is any specific [[WP:N]] rule for 'royalty', as some of these people don't have [[WP:SIGCOV]] to establish [[WP:N]], at least not in English [[WP:RS]].
*Another question that has cropped up has to do with updating information (e.g. youtube hits, song sales, etc.) Take for example [[Team_Trees]] which has a daily-updated table of how much this project has raised. This seems to head too far into [[WP:TRIVIA]], but I'd like to know if there's a hard and fast policy/guideline/consensus.
Thanks all. (not watching, please ping) [[User:ChrisWar666|- ChrisWar666]] ([[User talk:ChrisWar666|talk]]) 20:02, 7 December 2019 (UTC)
Hmmm, another one:
*Partly to do with the question about updating, what about links to videos (e.g. for music) and itunes/amazon/shops throughout articles? From what I understand, they serve as references to themselves (although not preferred), but what about other situations? music videos on songs, for example? references to people's dates of birth? Any help/consensus? [[User:ChrisWar666|- ChrisWar666]] ([[User talk:ChrisWar666|talk]]) 14:09, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Two part question.

1. What is the correct cite for this source?:

My web research does not find editors for the 6th edition. ICTUR is the publisher for the 7th (2016) edition. And I have found editors for it.

2. There are over 100 articles that cite this source. They are the majority of the articles listed in [[:Category:CS1 errors: explicit use of et al.]] I assume there are apps, I think Wikipedia calls them bots, that can be used to update a group of articles. == Adding a reference without a weblink ==

I am trying to add references which are newspaper cuttings, for which I have the JPG file. I do not want the JPG file to be displayed on the wikipedia page, rather to just appear in the references section as a link.

The method I have tried is as follows. I upload the JPG file to flickr.com, get the link, and then add < ref >http://weblink...< /ref > in the body of the article. This worked fairly well last night, but when I view it this morning the size is way too big and I see no way of automatically getting it to be the correct size.

What I would rather do is use wikipedia's file command which is clearly is much richer in features, however I am not sure how to add a file without it being displayed on the page (ie. having the user have to click on it to view it). Nor do I know how to get it into the References section. How is this done? I have recently been switching accounts a bunch; I just did the trial for my now-approved bot. However, because I use Firefox normally but it doesn't support one feature I need for the bot, some edits I did using the same code (each was manually approved) to test outside of the trial needed to be on Chrome. == Questions Regarding Process and Protocols for Dispute Resolutions & Anonymity for Editors ==

I'm new to Wikipedia editing and, admittedly, have much to learn about this process.

Question #1: When there is a dispute regarding a page (under New Section), who ultimately decides how that dispute is
resolved? Is it resolved by a committee that reaches consensus? Or some other process? Who is on the committee, if that is
the remedy? What is the criteria for becoming an editor with editorial control over protected pages? Are there any transparency requirements for such editors to identify by name and bio who they are? If not, why not? Has there been any deep discussion
about the problematic nature of having anonymous editors with editorial control over a site designed to engage democratic participation?

Question #2: What can be done about the Sister Cities California page that is out of date and needs serious updating.
It is a transcluded document and cannot be edited. Help!

Ah, never mind, no worries. A friend is teaching me how to update the sister cities CA page by using the code. Fingers crossed. LOl.[[User:Marcywinograd|Marcywinograd]] ([[User talk:Marcywinograd|talk]]) 22:44, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

:{{hidden ping|Marcywinograd}}Someone else will hopefully explain question #1, but regarding #2: You can edit [[List of sister cities in California]] by clicking on the pencil icon in the top right corner when editing, that will switch over to the Source Editor which is better equipped to editing that particular page. :{{re|Marcywinograd}} For #1: please try hard to reach consensus via a discussion on the talk page. Please start by assuming the we are all here to build the best encyclopedia we can (see [[WP:AGF]]) even, (or especially) if the other party is being unreasonable. ::{{u|Marcywinograd}}, there are no "committees" associated with articles and any editor is welcome to participate in discussions about article improvement. If an article is protected at a certain level, then only editors who meet the requirements of that protection level can edit the article directly. Read [[Wikipedia:Protection policy]] for all the details. Semi-protection is the most common, and that limits editing to registered accounts at least four days old with at least ten edits. This deters casual "drive by" vandalism and disruption by IPs and throw-away accounts. No editor nor any administrator has any "editorial control" over any page, although more experienced editors who have a deep understanding of policies and guidelines are often more influential in discussions. The basic way of resolving disputes is talk page discussion among interested editors leading to [[WP:CONSENSUS|consensus]]. Thank you, Cullen and Thjarkur, for your insights and guidance. Yes, the talk page is best, absolutely, for resolving differences. Thank you, Thjarkur, for your efforts to make this easy for me. I'm afraid I'm only botching it up, so I am going to stop and just work on putting together (in a file on my computer) an updated list of sister cities for CA. Then, perhaps my friend who is adept with software and code can help me enter it correctly. As of now, when I insert new sister cities without the code, using only the visual editor, I don't get the flag icon for that respective city--so it doesn't match what's there, format-wise. :(1) None of us volunteers who do ''all'' the work on Wikipedia has any control whatever over the banners, they are set up by Wikipedia's host the [[Wikimedia Foundation]] whose website is at https://wikimediafoundation.org/, if you want to complain about it to them.
:(2) It would be pointless to even try to recognize IP addresses in order to not show previous donators the banners, because:
::(a) Many IP addresses, such as those of computers in libraries, schools and workplaces, have more (sometimes many more) than one user, so 'delisting' that IP after a donation would prevent many users from ever seeing the banners;
::(b) Many IP address users (like myself) have [[dynamic IP addresses]] which their ISPs change at varying frequencies, reassigning them between their customers as convenient, so 'delisting' such an IP would
:::(i) prevent later assignees from seeing the banners at all, and
:::(ii) would not prevent a donator from seeing the banners after their IP changes.
::(c) Banners can be permanently switched off by anyone with a [[Wikipedia:User account|User account]], which is trivial to set up and doesn't commit one to anything, so one could do so for that purpose alone;
::(d) Most people like myself who do see the banners aren't annoyed by them and don't find the single click needed to close them particularly onerous;
::(e) Since using Wikipedia is completely free of charge, unlike many comparable websites, having to see a banner occasionally (Oh noes!!1!) can be thought of as a teeny tiny usage fee.
:Hope that gives you some food for thought. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} [[Special:Contributions/2.217.209.178|2.217.209.178]] ([[User talk:2.217.209.178|talk]]) 02:06, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

<p>Your Browser's Connection Security is Outdated.
<p>Wikipedia is making the site more secure. You are using an old web browser that will not be able to connect to Wikipedia in the future. Please update your device or contact your IT administrator.
:I'm using Internet Explorer 11, the highest-numbered release.
:I'm using Windows 7 Professional, for which Support from Microsoft ends Jan. 13, 2020,
<p> ... and with it IE 11 on Win7.

<p>Aside from Windows 8 (NINE was the German "Nein" = No), Windows 10 will not have a Windows 11 successor - 10 will be followed by 12.
<p>(reminds of "Why is ''nine'' afraid of ''seven'' - because "seven ate nine")
<p><p>Even ''Microsoft Security Essentials'' will continue to support Win7.. for a while, so why is Wikipedia scared of non-malevolent users of Win7/IE11, and how safe is it for other wiki people to use, if they're on a highway with 30% non-inoculation?
<p><p>Isn't it time, if Wiki has some clout, to publicize that the 30% running Win7/IE11 are still welcome, and let Microsoft/Dell (from whom I've been buying) know that Apple will be happy to eat their lunch, if they close 30% of the dining room.
:P.S. Tailorable software often facilitates presenting another version identifier, just as, long ago, versions of DOS higher than 4 permitted returning a value of 4 to not "break" older software. Those of whom the author of the above ''sec-warning'' seem afraid can surely ''spoof'' as an acceptable version ID.

So I literally just write the founder of my school, and you guys give me a warning. I noticed that some things on my School's page could have been more detailed and then I write my founder. Then you give me a warning when I reload the page to see the edit. This feels really stupid when I was absolutely sure it was my school's page and I was adding info that could have been helpful to someone who might be interested in that school. My friends have had similar things happen where they were just adding important facts, that they knew wee absolutely true, and were given warnings. Like what?! I feel like there is some sort of automatic thing that happens whenever you make an edit. So stop. Because some people have important things to say, so not cool guys. :{{ec}}Hello, IP user. Thank you for wanting to improve Wikipedia. The problem with your edit to [[Long-View Micro School]] is that it was unsourced. Wikipedia is nearly worthless if unsourced information has been added, because a reader has no way of checking whether the information is correct; so we don't allow unsourced information to be added. If your friends similarly added unsourced information, that will be why it was removed.
:It is unfortunate that {{U|Optakeover}} didn't explain this when they reverted your edit, or even when they posted a warning on your User talk page. My guess is that they thought it was vandalism: people often add names to articles about schools just for a laugh. : 1. '' '''What?!''' '' isn't quite informative header for your question. When I browse through the page, or even worse: when I browse through archives of the page, which span many years full of different questions, how shall I guess that the ''What?!'' names this particular issue??? <br/> The claim ''facts, that they knew wee absolutely true'' is insufficient in Wikipedia. Maybe you know of facts which are true - but it's the reader, who needs to know the facts are true. Anyone can add any information - or misinformation! - to Wikipedia. And the only way to tell them apart is referencing to reliable, published sources. What you or I know does not count. --[[User:CiaPan|CiaPan]] ([[User talk:CiaPan|talk]]) 19:24, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

== Biography class rating system? ==

Hi Wikipedians,

I found a biography today on a person I know a fair amount about. It seemed like it had a fair amount of opinion but most problematic it had no sourcing in the text (ie NO references). However it is classed as "B-rated" which seems to me from reading the rating criteria is way too high.

How do we flag this up for editors or the biography team??
Thanks. --[[User:Gobears87|gobears87]] ([[User talk:Gobears87|talk]]) 19:44, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
:what is the article in question? You can just be [[WP:BOLD]] and change the rating on the talk page, if you think it is of a different quality. Whilst articles are sorted into Wikiprojects, any user can edit these (up to a point) if they are of a different class. Articles with a large amount of unsourced information probably wouldn't meet the B class criteria. Best Wishes, '''[[User:Lee Vilenski|<span style="color:green">Lee Vilenski</span>]] ([[User talk:Lee Vilenski|talk]] • [[Special:Contribs/Lee Vilenski|contribs]])''' 19:51, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

::The article is this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_C._Rose and I was stunned to find that a MUCH better article for someone similar, which is properly sourced, is actually still rated "start" class - it's a shocking comparison and reversal of what the ratings "should" be. This is the comparison article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatrix_Farrand I would be curious to know what a regular editor thinks of these two (& their classifications). Thanks. --[[User:Gobears87|gobears87]] ([[User talk:Gobears87|talk]]) 19:54, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
:::Thing is, there's no automatic system that can regularly go through all of our nearly 6 million ever-changing articles and rate them consistently and accurately: [[Artificial Intelligence]] simply isn't that good yet (which may be a good thing, see [[Technological singularity]]). Most ratings are done on an ''ad hoc'' basis by (probably too few) volunteers (since everyone who works on Wikipedia's contents is an unpaid volunteer, like yourself), whose rating standards will inevitably vary even if (as sometimes may be the case) they aren't trying to hype an article that they have a personal interest in.
:::Also, there are no presiding editors to whom things can be 'flagged up' (although you could try placing the [[Template:Help me|'Help me' template]] on an article's Talk page with an explanation of the problem and hope that someone will respond) – you are just as much an editor of Wikipedia as I or any of the other 100,000 or more different people who edit Wikipedia every month. The nearest thing to a 'biography team' is probably [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography]], which you are welcome to investigate and join. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} [[Special:Contributions/2.217.209.178|2.217.209.178]] ([[User talk:2.217.209.178|talk]]) 21:08, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

    Duplicative text on Help:Disambiguation?

Hi. I think there is a superfluous paragraph at the end of Help:Disambiguation. I added this topic to the Talk page asking about it. The automated help text told me that this particular Talk page is "not watched by many users" and suggested asking my question here. So: Is there a superfluous paragraph at the end of Help:Disambiguation? If the last two paragraphs say the same thing, one should be eliminated; if not, one or both should be rewritten to clarify the point each is trying to make. Larrydberg (talk) 00:30, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Larrydberg: I guess Waddie96 meant to reformulate the existing paragraph in [1] but forgot to remove the old version. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:09, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance Required for Published Article Not Going Live

    Dear Wikipedia Help Desk,

I hope this message finds you well. I published an article on India Semiconductor Mission (username - Display Ecosystem) in November, and it has not gone live yet. The article draft can be found at the following link:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:DisplayEcosystem

I would like to understand the status of this article and whether there are any additional steps or issues preventing it from being moved to the live Wikipedia space. Your guidance on resolving this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Best regards, Sonali Jain DisplayEcosystem (talk) 05:26, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's because all of that content is on your Userpage. If you want to publish it completely then you should move it to a new space. However, I'd move that content to a draft and continue working on it since it still doesn't look ready to me. Should I move it to a draft so you can continue working on it? Hacked (Talk|Contribs) 05:30, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please guide me on further steps to make it live. It would be really great if you could provide me with your valuable feedbacks on page and it's content. DisplayEcosystem (talk) 05:35, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes sure, you can move it to draft so that I can publish it again. DisplayEcosystem (talk) 05:38, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I'll create a draft for you but please keep working on the content to make it better and then publish it. Hacked (Talk|Contribs) 05:39, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What do you want the title to be? Hacked (Talk|Contribs) 05:40, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The article is all about "India Semiconductor Mission". DisplayEcosystem (talk) 05:42, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have left a message on your talk page. If you are employed at India Semiconductor Mission, you are considered a paid editor and should make a paid contribution disclosure as explained in the message. Please also see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 05:46, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to clarify that I am not employed at India Semiconductor Mission. This page is being created for a government organization, which operates under the Ministry. Therefore, it should not be considered as a paid contribution.
I kindly request your guidance on any further enhancements or adjustments required to meet Wikipedia's standards. DisplayEcosystem (talk) 06:14, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You would also be a paid editor if you are employed or paid by the Ministry. For advice on your draft, it currently has no sources apart from external links. Wikipedia does not care about what India Semiconductor Mission or the Ministry says about itself. You need to find reliable sources that are independent of India Semiconductor Mission and base the article on what those sources say. If no such sources can be found, the organization probably does not satisfy Wikipedia's notability criteria. You can also read Help:Your first article for further advice. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 06:22, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hello, @DisplayEcosystem.
Editors who try to create an article before they have spent significant time learning how Wikipedia works often have a disappointing and frustrating task, because they have no idea what it takes to create a Wikipedia article. It's like trying to build a house when you have no knowledge of surveying, building, plumbing, electrical installation, etc. And it's even harder when you have a conflict of interest.
My earnest advice to new editors is to not even think about trying to create an article until you have spent several weeks - at least - learning about how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles. Once you have understood core policies such as verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable, independent sources, and notability, and experienced how we handle disagreements with other editors (the Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle), then you might be ready to read your first article carefully, and try creating a draft.
Be aware that Wikipedia is basically not interested at all in what you know (whoever you are) or in what the subject of the article (or their associates) say or want to say. A Wikipedia article should be a summary of what people wholly unconnected with the subject have chosen to publish about the subject, and very little else. First find your sources (and make sure they are independent: see WP:42) then forget everything you know about the subject, and write a summary of what those sources say. @Nigelpegram: The alleged death was copied from Wikipedia to Nigel Pegram (Q106264634) at our sister project Wikidata on 11 November 2024.[2] It was removed from Wikipedia 16 November but not from Wikidata. I have now removed it. Google does not reveal sources for their data fields, only the text snippet at the start if it's from Wikipedia, so I cannot say whether it will have an effect later. Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. How can we get this addressed in a quick manner? 108.41.112.201 (talk) 16:43, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you've tried to remove false information by being bold and doing it yourself, remember to either include a source or remove information without a source. Wikipedia works on verifiability, not truth - if a reliable source reports on an untrue fact, Wikipedia will host it as if it was true in most cases. Enough factual information is published to where running this way is more efficient than being a platform of original research. Departure– (talk) 16:48, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Generally, the best way to address an inaccuracy in an article is to start on the article's talk page. If the "inaccuracy" is cited to a reliable source, you'd need to provide other reliable sources that counter it. Schazjmd (talk) 16:51, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's hard to give you a clear answer when you haven't told us what article you were trying to edit. But generally, if you tried to remove something and got reverted, this is for one of three reasons:
    1. . You removed something without explaining why in the edit summary, and an editor patrolling for vandalism mistook an unexplained removal for vandalism.
    2. . You removed information which was, or appeared to be, verified by a reliable source. You will need to address this, either by showing that the source does not verify the information or is not reliable; or by adducing other reliable sources which support your version.
    3. . You are working in a contentious topic, where different people have different views about what information is genuine and what is false.
Whichever of these cases applies, you should open a discussion on the article's talk page, making sure to ping the editor(s) who reverted your edits - you can find who they were by looking at the article's history. ColinFine (talk) 20:46, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Templates to cite journals, books, etc?

Template:Cite IUCN Template:Make cite IUCN is fantastic. You basically just copy-paste unformatted information (author name, title, publisher, etc) and it formats them for you. Do we not have templates that can cite other sources? A template that cites journal articles would be particularly helpful. They often have numerous authors and, depending on the topic, dozens may need to be cited to write one complete article. Surtsicna (talk) 21:07, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question about an edit from 2 years ago

So i was digging around and i realized that 2 years ago someone(that is currently blocked from wikipedia) edited the article about "Rap God", particularly in the critical reception part where it went from "the song recieved critical acclaim" to "the song received mixed reviews" even tho it currently doesnt display it due to this being so long ago.

    before: https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Rap_God&oldid=1072529929

    after: https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Rap_God&oldid=1075188916

Im pretty new to editing and contributing so i apologise, but what ended up changing because it seems that it was still acclaimed/praised by critics?(Kory Grow from Rolling Stone, Jim Farber from Daily New, and Nick Hill from Contact Music among others) Elijahjb306 (talk) 23:40, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Elijahjb306. Since the editor who changed it is blocked, we can't ask why they made that edit, but neither wording ("critical acclaim" or "mixed reviews") is in the article now. Newly created article with another title

I recently created Flamingo Boy, a 2018 British children's novel written by Michael Morpurgo. A year later it was published in the states by Macmillan Publishing under the title The Day the World Stopped Turning, which is currently a redirect to Music Played by Humans, due to a single on that album having that name. However, the top search result from Google for "The Day the World Stopped Turning" is from Amazon books (Michael Morpurgo), and the fourth and fifth search results on the first page from Google are from Macmillan Publishing and GoodReads for the book. The single from the album is listed as the eight search result. I wanted to create a redirect for the American book title, but I don't just want to hijack that redirect page. @ErnestKrause: I used Template:Stack.[3] PrimeHunter (talk) 18:26, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It worked like a charm. Nice editing. ErnestKrause (talk) 00:00, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    I don't understand the point of MOS:CITELEAD

The reason why I don't understand the point of MOS:CITELEAD, is because it's supposed to act as a guideline to not use citations in the lead if the information they would like to source is not mentioned in the body. FeistyRooster (talk) 22:50, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your first sentence seems to be backwards: if the source is not mentioned in the body , it should be cited in the lead. But as I understand it, there should not normally be any information in the lead which is not in the body (forther up the same page: "Apart from basic facts, significant information should not appear in the lead if it is not covered in the remainder of the article.")
As to your last sentence: there is no "someone of a higher rank", and admins as admins have no part in setting policy (though they may be called upon to perform administrative tasks like closing discussion). If you want to open a discussion, you're as qualified to do so as anybody - either at the talk page of the relevant guideline, or at one of the departments of the village pump. Citation format for interviews - citing interviewer

Hi all -- quick question about citation/quote formatting. Appreciate any insights!

I'm using an interview of a subject of an article (Sam Gilliam) as a citation for a fact about an exhibition Gilliam held in New York in 1968. I am not using one of Gilliam's answers in the interview as the source for this detail, but rather one of the interviewer's statements.

    -Section of article -

    • Detail about the exhibition[1]

    -Citations-

    1. ^ Gilliam (2019), [Interviewer]: "Another situation you responded to with interesting results was your first one-person show in New York at the Byron Gallery, in 1968. You were presented with a 30 foot wall, so you decided to make a 30 foot painting with the playful title Sock-It-To-Me. [...] Shockingly, the gallerist turned the lights off at the opening because he was angry at your thinking-on-your feet gesture of installing what he deemed to be unsaleable work."

(I did some major clean-up on the Sam Gilliam article a while back before I really understood the nuances of citing interviews, doing some patching now to add in secondary sources to the few places where I accidentally used an interview as a sole citation.) 19h00s (talk) 02:53, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Small question

How do I see my edit count to articles only? Is there a script for this? TNM101 (chat) 06:37, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TNM101 there's a simpler way: go to Special:Contributions/TNM101, expand the "Search for contributions" menu, and select the "(article)" namespace. '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talkcontribs) 06:43, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Alright thanks a lot TNM101 (chat) 06:53, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have done as you said, but it seems like it doesn't show the number of edits, which is what I need TNM101 (chat) 07:23, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Go to Special:Contributions/TNM101, scroll down to the bottom, and select "Edit count" from the links there. Then scroll down to the "Namespace Totals". -- John of Reading (talk) 09:17, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Transclusion

Is there a way to transclude pages cross-wiki? Sangsangaplaz (Talk to me! I'm willing to help) 09:07, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sangsangaplaz: No, that's not possible. The only exception is that pages at Wikipedia can pick up values from Wikidata. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:13, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Choice of a specific value from Wikidata

Is there a way to chose a specific value when invoking from Wikidata? Lets say I have {{#property:P1843|from=Q206998}} and there are multiple values for that property. How do I chose exact one< Juandev (talk) 09:24, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Juandev General advice at WP:Wikidata#Inserting_Wikidata_values_into_Wikipedia_articles. It gets very technical but to get the "preferred" value of "heath" in your case you would need to use something like {{#invoke:WikidataIB |getPreferredValue |P1843 |qid=Q206998 |fetchwikidata=ALL |onlysourced=false}}, using a Lua module. Infobox image with casual outfit?

Hello. I am back on the Help Desk, working on the article Glaiza de Castro, with this question:

The current infobox image depicts the subject wearing a somewhat casual (at least for some) outfit. Will the casuality of the outfit of the infobox image affect FA nomination? Because there are no other good alternatives on Wikimedia Commons...

    Looking forward to a reply, thanks. Ramkarlo82 (VTC) 12:13, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see anything wrong with that image. There's nothing to worry about. And, TBH, I don't think it even matters at all. Hacked (Talk|Contribs) 12:15, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ramkarlo82 There is nothing in the criteria for featured articles at WP:FACR that would prevent that image being used. At present, the article is only rated as "C", so it has a long way to go. It would be standard practice to nominate it as a good article first. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:20, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Where can I find data on the circulation and citation rates of these journals?

Hello everyone, where can I find data on circulation and citation rates of journals from this list? Vyacheslav84 (talk) 12:21, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Consider the sentence the plot was influenced by H. P. Lovecraft's work. On The Staff of Karnath it was originally linked as [[H. P. Lovecraft]]'s and I recently changed it to [[H. P. Lovecraft|H. P. Lovecraft's]] in order to encompass the 's into the link, as I think the entire word should be linked, rather than leave unsightly (IMO) hanging non-linked text on the end of a bluelink.

User Rhain reverted, saying that this shouldn't be done, the apostrophe is not to be linked. P. Lovecraft" which is simpler from a source point of view, but I think it's better to pipe and make the visual aspect better for the reader, as covered by Wikipedia:Linking dos and don'ts - Use piping to fit link text into prose. I think that precedent has been set for appending text to the link in that Wiki already does this - appending any regular text onto the end of a link automatically bluelinks the entire cheeses text even though the link is for cheese singular, just with an "s" on the end. This doesn't work for apostrophes, so a manual method can be used instead. Chaheel Riens (talk) 13:57, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To clarify - should it be needed - I think the sentence "the cheeses were Richard Cheese's" is better presented as "the cheeses were Richard Cheese's" for the reader. Chaheel Riens (talk) 14:11, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

MOS:PIPESTYLE says Plurals and other derived names. [[apple]]s displays as apples, and this is simpler and clearer than [[apple|apples]]. Similarly: [[appeal]]ing, [[hyperlink]]ed, [[red]]dest. Some characters do not work after the link; see Help:Link for more details. Possessive is similar to plural. Its link to H:WIKILINK includes a possessive example, and the 's is outside of the wikilink brackets. Schazjmd (talk) 15:39, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd missed the possessive example in H:WIKILINK, but ironically Rhain has already noted in his arguments that Help:Link is only a guideline, not a policy. Chaheel Riens (talk) 16:40, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    WP:MOS itself is a guideline, not a policy. Schazjmd (talk) 17:13, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If there are no clear policy, it would be left to editors' own discretion. In this case, it might be better to ditch 's and use a different wording, something like "the plot was influenced by the work of H. P. Lovecraft." Tutwakhamoe (talk) 15:48, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think I prefer this option, but I also still believe (and I've stated this on the talk page) that in the absence of MOS policy, each editor should be free to pursue their own interpretation, so long as it doesn't become disruptive or tendentious. Chaheel Riens (talk) 16:42, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    But isn't you changing [[H. P. Lovecraft]]'s to [[H. P. Lovecraft|H. P. Lovecraft's]] a case of you overriding the previous editor's "own interpretation"? Schazjmd (talk) 17:16, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I know, which is why I said "might be better", it's a personal suggestion in case a consensus can not be reached. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 17:34, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

question re requests for templates at Wikipedia:Requested templates

hi. is there anyone here who watches the requests at Wikipedia:Requested templates? i have a template for a wikiproject, which i would like to modify. i appreciate any help. pls ping me if you reply. thanks! Sm8900 (talk) 15:24, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It would seem the best place to raise that issue would be at Template talk:WikiProject History, and perhaps add a note also over at Wikipedia:WikiProject History/Task forces/Modern and Contemporary history task force so they're also aware of the conversation.
