Matthias Hanke (born 1965) is Landeskirchenmusikwart of thee Evangelische Landeskirche in Württemberg. Previously he was district cantor for the Protestant church district in Böblingen and Kirchenmusikdirektor in Sindelfingen.
Career
At the age of fourteen he took over the direction of a church choir and a trombone choir in Kelheim where he was born, as well as the organ service for three places. Even before graduating from high school, he passed the D and C examinations for organ playing. After studying music education and church music in Bayreuth and Munich (degree A-Examen ), Hanke took over the direction of vocational music training at the Bavarian State School for the Blind in Munich.
In 1995, he took up the position of church musician at the Martinskirche in Sindelfingen. In 2003, he was appointed church music director by the regional bishop Gerhard Maier, the youngest in the history of the regional church up to that time. He was also Bezirkskantor in the Kirchenbezirk Böblingen . Hanke conducted several choirs in the "Martinskantorat" and the "Stiftshoforchester" in Sindelfingen and went on international concert tours with them to Brazil, South Africa, Italy, Poland, France, Spain and Russia, among other places. His most important local cultural projects were the "Sindelfinger Bachtage" and "Raum geben - die leere Martinskirche" with interdisciplinary concert concepts and church services. The artistic collaboration with Gerhart Darmstadt (Hamburg), overtone singer Wolfgang Saus (Aachen) and composer Helge Burggrabe enriched his work. He also enjoyed playing the piano in the salon music formation Cocktail and went on concert tours with his family.
On 1 April 2016, he took up the post of "Landeskirchenmusikdirektor" (LKMD) of the Evangelische Landeskirche in Württemberg and succeeded LKMD Bernhard Reich. His successor as church musician in Sindelfingen and as district cantor in the Böblingen district is Daniel Tepper. Hanke has been chairman of the advisory board of the Singing with Children Foundation since 2018. He is advisory board chairman of Kohelet GmbH & Co KG, which released the song app Cantico in 2019.[1]
He is married to Theresia Hanke, an Austrian graduate violinist. Their four sons David, Lukas, Jonathan and Fabian perform in public under the name Hanke Brothers.
