Tunisia is divided into 24 governorates (wilayat, sing. wilayah). This term in Arabic can also be translated as province or federated state (though the latter does not apply, as Tunisia is a unitary state).

The governorates are divided into 264 "delegations" or "districts" (mutamadiyat), and further subdivided into municipalities (baladiyat),[3] and sectors (imadats).[4]
Tunisia has 6 regions in the entire country.[5] Near the capital, Tunis, it is mostly semi-arid. However, in the southern regions, it is very arid due to the Saharan Desert.
