The Rashtrakutas were a dynasty which ruled the Deccan during the 8th-10th centuries.
Origin
They were mentioned in the edicts of Ashoka as 'Rathika's or 'Rastika's. They are variously believed to have descended from Rajputs or of Reddi or Maratha origin. Some believe however that they were from Karnataka itself. They came into prominence by overthrowing the Chalukyas of Badami around 750 A.D. and ruled the present day Karnataka for over 200 years. Dantidurga was the first prominent member who gained independence from the Chalukyas. Dhruva (780 - 793) considerably expanded the kingdom.
