Convicting a Murderer is an American true crime documentary series narrated and hosted by Candace Owens for conservative media company The Daily Wire. The show is a rebuttal to the 2015-2018 Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer,[3] which argued for the innocence of Steven Avery, a man wrongly convicted of sexual assault and later freed only to be charged with and convicted of the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. While Making a Murderer sought to build a case for Avery's innocence, Convicting a Murderer argues that Avery is in fact guilty, and that Netflix irresponsibly attempted to portray him as innocent for media attention. Convicting a Murderer further posits the notion that Avery became a poster-child for an anti-police agenda in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and that efforts to portray him as innocent are part of a widespread "liberal agenda" to skew public opinion against the criminal justice system.
The series was produced by Transition Studios and directed by Shawn Rech, who started filming it in early 2018. It was released through DailyWire+ on 7 September 2023.[4] Rech and Owens claim in Convicting A Murderer that Avery's murder conviction should not be reversed.[5]
Reception
Ed Power at The Daily Telegraph called it a "baffling takedown" and "stonkingly tedious."[6]
Rachel Leishman, Assistant Editor at The Mary Sue wrote a scathing opinion piece, in which she acknowledges that she has not watched the show. She calls the show "Copaganda", and goes further to say "Convicting a Murderer, in its premiere and first couple of episodes, seems to just put out more of the same information but just with other people’s opinions on it and claiming that as fact."[7]
